A question about trading games for hardware at EB

So, I find myself in possession of 3 games with $37 trade-in values that I have no intention of playing again, as well as two $25 gift cards. I decided to do the only reasonable thing: cash them in for a used PSP from EB.

I went to EB last night. They had a practically mint PSP, but I ran into a huge snag -- apparently, the Winnipeg by-law means that not only do I have to spend the credit from the games immediately (which I already knew), I also can only use the credit towards other games, not hardware. Which means no PSP for me.

There's hope, though. When the cashier saw my disappointment, she told me that if I wanted to trade them in for a PSP, all I had to do was drive to Selkirk, which doesn't fall under the same by-law. Trade in my games for store credit, then some back here and pick up the PSP with the credit.

This is easy enough for me to do -- Selkirk is only a 40 minute drive from my apartment -- but I was wondering if anyone else has done this. I'm getting a little paranoid.

Just to be perfectly sure, at any EB outside Winnipeg, I can trade in games for store credit, and use that credit at any EB to buy anything, right?

EB credit is universal..While I was living in Prince George, BC, I had racked up some credit out there and bought things out here in Alberta after I moved back..Don't know if that's applicable to the 'peg situation, but I still stand by the first statement that EB Credit is universal.

Okay, that's about as much of a confirmation as I can get. I'll drive out to Selkirk in the next few days and trade in my games, then. Thanks.

This by-law is horrid.

i wouldnt wait a few days, price drops happen, those 37$ games could become 25$ in the matter of hours. Yes i'm being paranoid, but GTA did so.

Just throwing it out there, if you have the time I would do it today, not to sound paranoid but game values trade frequently.

Anyways your question had been answered and im just throwing in another 2 cents. For what its worth, just wondering why you're buying used.

I'm a little paranoid, yeah. Luckily, the games are all listed in the "Most Wanted" ad, which states "promotion valid until February 28". Still, I might head out there today.

my example was grand theft auto 4, went from i think 37$ to 25$

this was because of a price cut in the game itself though to promote lost and the damned.

I think GTA4 trade in value dropped to $25 because the game also dropped in price at EB games. I think I saw it new for $50 and used for $45. (priced like a wii game) So a $25 tiv is not bad.

It was still on the most wanted list. Who's to say your game won't drop? Also, that promo also says "can be ended at any time" or whatever the wording is...
Also, why buy used and not new?

Assuming that Far Cry 2, COD4 and Prince of Persia are still worth $37 each, along with gift cards, I have $161 at my disposal. That would get me a used original PSP (~$120) and a game, or I could put in a couple extra dollars and pick up a used PSP slim (~$150) but no games.

If I buy new, it jumps to $170 w/o games... which means I have to actually put in some money. And I promised myself I would only trade things in for a PSP if it doesn't cost me anything :)

Plus, my local EB has a mint original PSP. I think I'd be happy with that. I like how the original PSP fits in my hands better than the slim, anyway.

Used = no warranty, though.
That aside, Far Cry 2 and Prince of Persia have pending price drops to $39.99, so like the others said, I would trade them ASAP :)

Far Cry 2 is NOT worth 37. It's used price dropped to 34.99 as well. You'll probably be looking at $25 if it follows the same logic as GTAIV but who knows. I believe Future Shop is only giving $13 for it so you might get even less than $25.

Sorry, talking about the PS3 version, not 360. As of today on the website (http://ebgames.ca/tradeinvalues.asp), it's still $37. Still, I need to ditch it asap, because that certainly won't last long.

For what it's worth, that website doesn't count for in-store.
I don't know how many posts I've read of people complaining that the store wouldn't honour the website because the tiv changed...

+1, happened to me

Also didn't the most wanted ad used to say $37 for GTAIV? So they've actually gone and changed the PDF, which surprises me for some reason.

Well, the deed is done. After work, my fiance and I took a leisurely drive out to Selkirk to trade in the games. COD4 and Prince of Persia both rang up at $37, while Far Cry 2 rang up at $25. I pulled out a print-off of the website from earlier in the day. She looked at it, declared, "well, it is from the Canadian site," and -- much to my surprise, since I've never gotten EB to match their Canadian online prices before -- bumped it up to $37 with no hesitation. Now I have a $111 credit (in addition to the $50 I already had). Not bad for a half hour drive. Not bad at all.

The plan had originally been to pick up a used original PSP and a game, but I think I'm going to pitch in a little extra cash and buy a new slim. The video out is too attractive to pass on, and if I'm going to spend the cash on a used slim, I might as well spend a couple extra dollars and get it new with a warranty (since buying a used slim only saves me, what, $20?).

i do not know where this no warranty on used items started but Eb offers 7 days on used games and 30 days on used systems. Also it does not seem to be bought up much but you have 7 days on a used game and if you do not like it you can return it for full credit.

yeah but put it this way, if your used system is a lemon it will be a lemon from when you get it, the 30 day is just piece of mind.

Better to have something, rather than nothing. Personally I prefer to buy new anyway!

I was in the U.S. a few months ago and watched how the used hardware market sells at EB/Gamestop stores. Customer asks for a DS, sales person says you can save $20 buy buying used. Person says sure. Then the sales person asks if they'll like a 1 year warranty for $20 to protect it, they say sure. I watch the first sale and was confused but after seeing it happen 2 more times I couldn't believe they didn't figure out what the sales person did.
