A very strange trip to Blockbuster

I had some time to kill today so while driving I saw a Blockbuster I had never been into before. I thought I would stop in and look for some game deals. Usually Blockbuster's have shelves of used games. This store had less than 12 games total. Some of the games were NFL 2K2, NBA 2K2 and NFL Blitz 2002. They were all $24.99 each! They also had some other games like Panzer Dragoon Orta for $19.99 which also was overpriced but not as bad as the sports games.

Looking at the game rental section (again, just to kill time), it seemed like this store loves old sports games. If you want a 2002 or 2003 or sports games, that you had many choices and the worst part was that a lot of the games were rented out! It would probably be cheaper to buy Madden 2003 for $2 - $3 at EB rather than spend $6 or $7 to rent it.

I then went to look at the used videos and I couldn't believe some of the titles I saw. The VHS section was weird. Some titles for sale were - using Word Perfect (some old version), a video about Calcium, a video about Eating Disorders and other health type videos.

As if things weren't weird enough, I saw they had booklets about the ESRB out so I took one just to see what they had to say (I know the ratings but I wanted to see how it was written). The first strange part was the Kids To Adult Rating was in the booklet which hasn't been used since early 1998 so I was thinking about how useless the booklet was. I then looked at a list of systems in the booklet and the line that I noticed was "Nintendo Ultra 64, coming in 1996." That's right, this Blockbuster had ESRB booklets out that are almost 10 years old!

After that, I half expected to find SNES and Genesis systems for rent right next to the VCR players they had for rental.

Ha, VCRs for rent. That's great.

Reminds me of a story I either read or watched on the news a few years ago about how some people (mostly older people) are still paying the phone company a rental fee for their telephone - this was apparently common in the good old days. Of course today you can buy a cheap phone for $10 or less.

That's exactly what I thinking. Who the heck rents a VCR when you can get one for $35 at Wal-Mart?

Wal-Mart still sells VCR's...?

Hell, I got my DVD player for $25 I think, they might as well move into the future.

actually most sports games are ridiculously priced at all BB i've been too. most GR stores are like EB's prices.. but just normal BB they set their own prices and never lower them.. but yeah.. thats weird VCRs.. thats just crazy.

They also had a large section of VHS tapes for rent. Maybe people in the area just aren't into DVD's yet. I agree it's ridiculous to rent a VCR. It's got to be at least $9.99 to rent one, and FYE always has DVD players (no name junky ones) for $19.99 after rebate which would be a much better deal of course. Something else I noticed was that stuff in new releases had been out for a while though I'm not familiar with how long a title is considered a new release (at the local Movie Gallery where I normally go, certain XBox and GCN launch games are considered new releases!). Maybe this store just doesn't want to accept the fact that technology changes.

Welcome back to the future. I hope your stay in the crazy old fashioned east coast was pleasant and not too frightening. I hope you didn't scare any of the employees there by mentioning futuristic words such as internet,PS2,XBOX, and/or mention the year you are from - 2005. You could leave them with nasty lasting brain scars!
Must be an old folk's town, my grandparents struggle with the DVD adjustment.
I was thinking the same thing one of my friends is from Arizona. They old folks there built there own town. It's called sunset west and you have to be at least 55 to live there and when passing though you can't be loud or anything.
Perhaps the store acts as a sort of money laundering service or a front for another business?
I have been telling people for years the Mafia is not dead.

Did you ask the cashier to check the price? I just picked up PDO at a Blockbuster for $12.99, and as far as I know, prices on Blockbuster's games are set company-wide.
