Excuse me if this topic has been rinsed to death in the past, but I tried some searches and didn't really find much.

I read in the IGN reviews that these games are really similar to their sequels, but I figured I should get the facts from the most anal (oops, I mean...discerning =P) of gamers. Basically, if I own Advanced Wars 2 and Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones and enjoy them but don't care about story very much, is it worth picking up the original ones?

This thread will self-destruct after half a dozen or so complaints :bomb:

Both are basically more of the same, aside from some tweaks and fewer unit types.

I enjoyed the campaign in AW1 more than AW2's. The original Fire Emblem has fewer RPG elements (no random skirmishes or huge endurance side quests). Makes it much harder since you can't really power level your characters. Not sure which way I prefer. I also liked the characters a lot more in the original FE, but it sounds like you don't care about that.

I think they're all completely awesome and must buys for strategy fans. And if you have/get a DS, AW: DS is simply amazing.

right on, thanks for the response...i can definitely appreciate fewer rpg elements (i'm way more into strategy than rpg), but i figured i should get the latest one since they're both the same price. i'd definitely get both AW1 and FE if they had gone down in price at some point, but i don't feel they're worth it at $30...but i'm curious if they're worth it if i can find them for cheaper...

I'd say yes to FE but no to advanced wars. Advanced wars 1 limits you to only the red star commanders which makes playing 1 after 2 a bit dull. Fire emblem on the other hand is actually a bit more difficult than sacred stones.

I enjoyed playing the first Fire Emblem more than the Sacred Stone. I feel more attached to the characters in the first FE. After I beat FE I went back and played it three other times to see the different character endsings, but after I beat Sacred Stone I just left it lying there. I didn't even go through Ephraim's route yet. I'll get back on it some day, but I just don't know when.

But for Advance Wars, the sequel is definitely better. The extra COs, maps, and the newer (than AW1) SCOP makes the game more fun. Of course, if you have a DS, you should go pick up AW:DS, but I assume you don't.

I think the reason for your lack of attachment to the Sacred Stones characters has something to do with the fact that it's easier to keep them all alive since you can level them up to a point where they're stronger than their enemies. Try playing through again without doing the sidequests or purposely leveling them up. You'll likely sing a different tune.

From what I understand, Advance Wars feels like a step down if you've already played / been playing AW2. No Mega tanks, less COs, only 1 CO power. I'd just stick with AW2 (or get a DS and try AWDS...it's awesome).

Cool, thanks...looks like I'll be staying away from AW1 then. Fire Emblem is still an option I suppose. I just got Tactics Ogre and have been spending a load of time with that, but I'm not sure I like it all that much (this game is slllloooowwwwww).

The thing is I didn't go through sidequests or purposely level them up. The only time I went into those maps is to level Myrrh up, and after she was level 20, she just sat on my bench.

I think I like FE more is because it was the first game in the series I play. If I play Sacred Stone first, I might have like that one more.

Hey does anyone know what these games predecessors were called in Japan. I thought I remembered reading that these two series originally came out in Japan way back in the NES days and continued on the SNES. Is that correct?
