I recently lost my router due to circumstances beyond my control. :\ Anyway, a friend was nice enough to let me borrow his - it's a Linksys WRT54G. He has it loaded with a custom firmware, DD-WRT v24 RC-4 (10/10/07) micro. Problem is, it keeps dropping my connections. I can't upgrade my PS3 because it keeps losing connection, and it drops if I'm streaming content as well (from YouTube, for example). It isn't a wireless issue, because I tried connected my PS3 w/ a CAT-5 cable & get the same results.

He told me he doesn't care if I get rid of this custom firmware, problem is I can't figure out how. It isn't as simple as using the web interface flash utility, that doesn't work. And I've been searching trying to find something on the web that helps, but everything I find is about putting this firmware on, not taking it off.

Anyone have any suggestions? I'd just go get a new router, honestly, but I'm kinda broke so that's not an option right now.

I have that router at home and it's pretty easy to flash. Your web interface flash SHOULD still work to flash to the original firmware, just let it sit for awhile and flash through. But if it doesn't work, you can use the linksys TFTP client to flash the router. You need the username/pw though, but you probably have that. (Default is root/admin for DDWRT)

You can try flashing another custom firmware onto it. For example, here is instructions for flashing the firmware I use (tomato) over a preexisting firmware.

Holding the reset button will only set all values back to default. The router doesn't keep a copy of the previous firmware for you to go back to. It might enable you to get into the web interface though. You can also try using Firefox, IE, or Opera to access the interface.

I use DD-WRT, its been a lifesaver. Its probably configured wrong.

Tomato is great too, and preferable if it supports your router.

I agree both are good. tomato does do QoS a bit better then dd-wrt but both are way better then the default cisco ios.

its obvious that the current firmware is not configured properly...your best bet is to reflash with another firmware. probably best to flash w/ tomato since you said you were using dd-wrt already. not 100% sure but if u update to another version of dd-wrt it will keep the older settings?

I'm thinking, at this point, it's going to take a young priest & an old priest.

I can't tftp the Linksys firmware back on it, the tftp client says it can't communicate with it. So then I tried to load tomato using the firmware updater in the web interface, and it says it's successful - but then it reboots, and nothing has changed.

My friend said he had a hard time getting this firmware to load in the first place (the router is version 8, which is one of the ones with only 2mb flash). He may have permanently loaded it, it looks like. :\
