Adventures in Camping!

The story that follows may not be so much about camping, but it does involve a tent outside.

In a quest to find fun stuff to do over the summer, GG and I recently got a tent and a little mini tent thats pretty much just a bug net with sticks. It was a really nice clear night out last night, so we decided to test out the mini tent. We get the tent set up outside and lay down. After an hour or two, we're sleeping. I'd like to think I'm smart enough to think about what was going to happen ahead of time... but I'm not. You'd think after frequently commenting on how dumb it is for the to run the sprinklers at night while its raining, that'd I'd suspect they'd also run them at night when it hasn't rained. 4am rolls around and brings 3 ice cold water spitting sons of bitches with it. The fine black mesh did little to stop the jets of water from nailing us. :cold::cold::cold::cold::cold:

Anyone else have any camping stories gone awry? Preferably with bears...

Well, a couple of years back my friends and I went camping by a local river just about every weekend. It started to get boring, so we started getting stupid. We started bringing a can of gasoline with us and used to idiotically play with fire. We took some precuations like not letting the gasoline within 50 feet of our camp fire, so that we would have some control.

Anyway, one time we decided we wanted to build a hut, so we chopped down 2 small trees nearby, and gathered up all of the wood we could. We managed to build a relatively impressive hut, but soon we grew bored with the hut and decided we wanted to see it go up in flames. So we start dousing the hut in gasoline, thinking everything is ok. After about 5 minutes of dousing we noticed that a trail of gasoline was heading straight back to our camp fire. Just about as soon we noticed the trail caught fire and the hut essentially exploded within 5 seconds. Nobody was hurt, but damn that was intense.

edited - because I interchanged hut and cabin.

I had a similar experience. It was about 5 years ago, I was 12. I loved fire. Anyway, we had a can of kerosene, used to light the campfire, ect. We were in a heavily wooded area somewhere in Colorado, we were camped in a dusty clearing about 20 yards square. Anyway, me and my sister found some long sticks, and wanted to make torches. So we let the thick ends of the branches soak in a ceramic bowl full of kerosene, then igniting the stick in the campfire. We had fun sword-fighting with the flaming branches, and then re-lighting the torchesafter they went out. Apparently, I didn't completely extinguish my branch when I went to dip it back into the bowl for a another go, because the white bowl of fuel lit up in my face. I freaked out, and chucked the bowl into the dirt, but some of the fire spilled on my shirt, but I dropped and rolledaround. So from there, we threw dirt and water all over the small fire that had started where the bowl shattered.

Dammit, I was young and foolish. Now I know to throw it on my sister, instead of wasting the kerosene on plain ol' dirt. ;)

When I was in boy scouts. I swear that the boy scouts got paid by the state for the stuff we did. When we went camping, we got leaky tents and a raccoon in one of them. As well we got to chop wood, pick up cigarettes butts and trash, went hiking to get ticks on us. couldn't even swim in the creek that was 3 feet deep cause they were worried about our safety. I threw a twig in the camp fire and got yelled at cause "I was playing in the fire". We weren't even allowed to roast our own marshmallows. Meanwhile my sister is at girl scout camp riding horse's, fishing, hiking (no ticks), and swimming + more. I ended up quitting boy scouts cause the people running it didn't know what they were doing.

Ever other time I went camping with other people we had no problems. Me and my cousin did have some fun with lighter fluid and fireworks.

hmm sounds like that episode of Viva La Bam

I had one of my first dachsund's with me in Vermont and I was camping out with family and what not. We were playing fetch when a Coyote came and started attacking my dog. I grabbed a rifle my Uncle lent me (he wants me to start hunting but I don't like killing animals for sport...but I guess that changed in this story) and began to unload on it. I got around five shots into it relatively quickly but wasn't fast enough for my dog. Man I hate coyotes. I plan on clearing out the area up in VT when we take up my dogs. They'll learn not to hunt on our land (even if we put up a fence - my uncle has had problems with them digging under them to get into shit - that and we have bears in the area).

I had a varitable hell of a camping trip with my family a while back, it included

1. Me slicing open my hand with my pocketknife
2. My sister getting lost, and a full three hour search for her...
3. Huge family fight between basically everyone
4. Me getting lost on a two hour long "Nature Walk"
5. My aunts taking car trips to the bathroom, and going shopping midway
6. Rain that seeped into the tent in buckets

Ill gladly go into detail about any of the above six...:D

Heh. On the same trip as the fire incedent, we had a similiar experience. Our tent is a real piece, it's about 15 years old, and the sealant is mostly gone. WHenever it rains, whenever there's percipitation, it soaks through and drips on you.

We had water a couple inches thick...

There were six of us...three on a inflatable matress, two on the floor, and me on an cot...I was the only one that wasnt soaked waking up. The leak werent from the sides as much as the windows, and from a tear at the end of the tent( a result of my uncles spider assasination mission). God what a pain in the ass

Yeah.. after a fridgid night of soaking wet sleeping bags, wet shoes, wet clothes, a wet tent full of mud and a wet, unhappy dog, we decided to stow our shit under the car and sleep in it. It was a 1986 Toyota 4Runner, and uncomfortable as hell. It wouldn't start up properly for the next few days, it wouldn't turn over, but rather go 'grun-grun-grun' as the odometer needle went crazy. Being the anxious pansey I am, I about was about to shit my pants until it started.
