In the interest of people flying back home to college/university or travelling across the country in the wild blue yonder, has anyone had any positive/negative experiences with tossing games and systems in your luggage and leaving them in the hands of the airlines?

Considering that some of us, myself included, will probably be travelling back with a HD or two and a handful of games and portables perhaps it may be helpful to get some ideas and experiences for people who are unsure of what do expect/what to do.

Personally, I've only ever tossed a HD (in an external case, of course) into my checked baggage at an airport. It was completely protected and padded (a bubble-wrap filled smaller tote bag and soft clothing around it will do that) and came through without a scratch and with no memory problems. If you're going to be bringing back something for your computer or your PS2 or whatnot like that be sure to pad it well and, if possible, keep it near the middle of your checked bag and make sure it doesn't shift much. That way it hopefully won't receive the full force of a good chuck on and off a plane (which will more than likely happen).

I brought my old fat PS2 with me once to Arizona (Flight started in Virginia) and put it in the center with all my clothes amd towels and such. I took it out of the bag about an hour later when arriving to my grannys house. It was very hot so I made it cool off for a few minutes. I then plugged it up and it worked fine.

i took my xbox once and packed in the luggage, not carry on. as i was boarding the flight, they called my name over the intercome to come to the security area. They told me the xbox tested positive for some chemical and wanted me to sign a waiver thing. :/ this was LAX btw and a few years back.

For the next few months I'd forget about enjoying a GBA, DS, or PSP during a flight.

Try to cultivate an interest in long novels or multi-volume series.

Also, try to avoid sleeping before the flight so as to spend as much airtime unconcious as you can manage.

Damage is probably the least of your worries. I'd be afraid someone that worked in the Airport would steal your stuff. My co-worker lost a 5-year old laptop, because he put it in his checked baggage.
