...literally. ;)

MONTGOMERY, Alabama (AP) -- Simmering tensions in the Alabama Senate boiled over Thursday when a Republican lawmaker punched a Democratic colleague in the head before they were pulled apart.

Republican Sen. Charles Bishop said Democratic Sen. Lowell Barron called him a "son of a [expletive]."

"I responded to his comment with my right hand," Bishop said.

Now THAT'S how you go about makin' laws!

It's so fucking embarrasing.. our state legislature is the most unprofessional, crooked, childish legislative body in the entire nation. These people broker campaign funds like you wouldn't believe, and filibuster on a weekly basis. Seriously.. half of the senators walked out on half of the session. We can't pass a state budget, but we can issue a state apology for slavery (and watch the lawsuits start pouring in). They pander to the Christian vote, while acting like a bunch of beggars to any giving interest group. This is why we have an undereducated population.. want an example? Look at our state constitution (longest among all 50 states). These are the people that big business buys votes from to walk on the population.

In Montgomery alone.. we have discriminating housing costs (apartment rentals are way above the national average, acting as a barrier to entry), wages lower than the national average, yet a 10% sales tax that's above the national average.

Eh.. enough ranting (unless anyone wants to discuss it further). Mark another huge vote to how embarrasing this state is.. it's funny to watch senior citizens fight, but they weren't fighting when they gave themselves a huge raise a month ago (but wouldn't pass a bill to give raises in public education).

Normally, I'd forgive people for using superlatives about how awful their state government is.

In your case, however, with that state *just* to the south of you, I can't help but feel that you should be thanking the maker everyday for your elected officials.

Given that politics is approaching entertainment/pro wrestling more than reasoned debate (turn on any 24-hour news channel for up-to-the-minute evidence of how bad it is), a lil' fisticuffsmanship ain't nothin' to sweat.

Seems like Thailand's parliment (Or whatever their representitive body is called, I don't quite recall) get into mass fist fights every so often.

Nothing says democracy like whinging a broken microphone stand at some old bastard with a bad comb-over down the aisle! :D

What, the oil platforms in the gulf? J/k

At least Florida has a state lottery though, and we are part of what funds it. Alabamians flock to Biloxi to gamble, and buy GA and FL tickets at the border constantly (especially en route to the beach). Here, Indian Casinos fund the Christian right to get into a frenzy, and brainwash the masses from the pulpit. Meanwhile.. vehicles with Alabama license plates and Jesus fish magnets on the bumpers line up at gas stations and casinos to gamble and buy scratch off tickets.

Another thing.. if you've ever been to Jasper (where the senator that threw the "pansy punch" represents).. it's literally a town in the hills way out in the middle of nowhere. Granted the only stocked rainbow trout creek is near there (a great little fishing spot, but fly fishing is still out of the realm of understanding to most typical Alabama fishermen), but you could pick up any chick in the town if you have a vehicle and steady income ;) (yep.. that's all it takes). All you have to do is get past the meth mouth.

I haven't really followed Florida politics beyond what I hear on the Stern networks and the occasional trip down there, so I can't really speak for that. I'm interested though, I'll have to Google it later. I'll tell you what though.. the education funding amounts of Alabama and GA are disgusting in the comparisons that I've seen/read. However.. I guess that's my perspective. I'm an Alabama native, but grew up in several different states being an offspring of a parent in the military.

Wow. For some reason I skipped the first few sentences of the OP and only read this the first time.

"I responded to his comment with my right hand," Bishop said.
I took it as Bishop giving him the jerking off hand motion. Would have been a lot funnier that way.

Agreed. Also, Jeff Sessions is a total asshole. He flies out of my airport semi-regularly, and always treats us like shit. Attaboy, Mr. Elected By and For the People.

My geographic knowledge is embarrassing this morning. I meant Louisiana, which is substantially more west of you than I thought this morning. Can I chalk that up to a lack of coffee?

aren't mass brawls a daily occurrence in the British parliament?
Thank God for Mississippi.
For what? Always being the one state one step behind us in every national ranking??? Or for being the most embarrasing game to Alabama last year :)

Ahhh.. well, if they're anything like LSU fans.. well, now I get it :) I actually used to live in Shreveport (particularly Bossier City, for Barkesdale). I went back like 4 years ago.. holy shit at the casino effect. I agree with you in that the state government..hell, from Katrina alone.. is bullshit. Lemme tell you though... if you compared the size of the swamp bugs in central Florida to those in Louisiana.. it'd be hard to tell the difference ( I used to hear stories at Barkesdale about how they would pick the mosquitos up on radar, and they would think a B-52 was hovering in the air).
Agreed. Also, Jeff Sessions is a total asshole. He flies out of my airport semi-regularly, and always treats us like shit. Attaboy, Mr. Elected By and For the People.
Yep.. he's a pretty big douche. I've heard a couple MP3's of him on the Rick and Bubba Republican-Bible Belt Spin Show, and he's the product of southern corporate campaign contributions. Shelby... I'd go as far to say as he's probably pocketed money from defense contractors directly.

Funny story about him.. about a year or two ago, Bush spoke at Auburn Montgomery. You had to call Session's office here in town to get tickets. If you weren't a registered republican, you weren't allowed. Many students were shot down to attend the speaking, and it ended up being a reward to local republican staples. It was advertised as a speaking engagement mainly to students and faculty.
