Hey CAGS,

I’ve got some news I’m both excited and sad to share with you at the same time. I’ll be leaving the Digital Video Games team in Mid-March to join the marketing team for Amazon.com’s Loyalty and Rewards program, Amazon Coins. My boss and I have talked extensively about how to maintain and continue our presence here and across the other communities we’ve created in the past couple of years. To that end I’d like to introduce you to Josh, who take over monitoring, updating, and responding to this thread. Josh will be ramping up over the next couple of weeks, he  will be posting shortly to introduce himself.

Now that the “what’s going on” part of the message is out of the way I want to tell you all how much I love CAG and the posters here. This was the first community I joined when I started this job (anyone still remember that first thread?) and all of you have had a huge hand in shaping how we think about and execute Community Development and Management here at Amazon, which has in turn shaped my career these last two and a half years.

I started to write out a section calling out the regular posters and realized the list would be both overly long and incomplete at the same time. Instead I’d like to thank you all again, you all have my deep and sincere gratitude. I’ll still be around and my gaming accounts aren’t going anywhere so feel free to hit me up anytime you want to chat. I’ll probably still hang out in the thread too :).

Thanks again everyone, let me or Josh know if you have any questions!

The Indie Store has launched!
Amazon.com is launching a storefront dedicated to supporting and promoting PC/Mac/Web-based Indie Games. Our Digital Video Games team is a small group of passionate gamers and we’re all really excited to help Indie developers reach more customers quickly by providing a quick and simple process for bringing their games to market. Additionally we’ll be supporting the Indie Store with a ton of promotions, both at and after launch. Many of these promotions are designed to give the developer the opportunity to maximize their revenue. For example, Amazon is forfeiting all royalties from bundle sales and passing them along directly to the developer, we’ve also created an “Indie Spotlight” program to help customers learn more about the games and developers they love. We view the Indie developers as some of the most creative in the industry and we want to help them continue to create new and innovative experience for customers.

Why we are doing this:

  • Allow customers to discover an entirely new category of games on Amazon.com
  • Help developers reach new customers quickly. Our onboarding process is straightforward and we want to sell every Indie game available
  • We want to leverage our strengths to support and help the developers who are driving forward innovation and creativity in the games industry
General Information

Hi CAGs,
I'll be posting deals we're running on Digital Games (PC/Mac, Free to Play, Sony/Microsoft Points/Subs).

I'm also here to answer questions you might have, get you closer to the developers by hosting Q&As, setting up podcasts, live streaming gameplay etc. If I don't respond to a question you have in thread please send me a PM. These ping my email address and make it more likely that I will see your question and respond more quickly.

Cheers,
Tony

FYI. EA Games sold by Amazon will not activate on Steam.
F.A.Q.S.:

1. Does the game I'm buying from Amazon Activate on Steam/Origin/Uplay? What DRM does the game use?

There are two places to identify DRM on a digital video game detail page:

At the top of the page, below the title:

In the "Product Description" section:

2. Note on Electronic Arts Games - For the most part, EA games sold on Amazon do not activate on Steam. Most activate on Origin.

3. Note on DRM with limited activations:

Our Policy

4. Sometimes I'll do giveaways.

5. I work with developers and publishers to get fun (or at least what I think is fun) content to share with you all. Here are some examples:

a. Check out the Pax Gameplay videos here: Xcom: Enemy Unknown I played Xcom with Jake, the Creative Director for the game, a few months before the game came out Also, on this page, check out the Q&A, also a community driven event.

b. Check out the interview on this page: Borderlands 2 we did this interview at E3 with Randy Pitchford this year.

c. We've partnered with the ++GoodGames Podcast to feature many of the games we carry. They talk to the developers about the game development process, how the games are conceptualized and managed, all kinds of fun stuff. I'm working on putting together full link list and will update when I have it.

What else do we sell?

Xbox Live Points and Subscriptions:

1600 Microsoft Live Points
4000 Microsoft Live Points
12 Month XBOX Live Subscription
3 Month XBOX Live Subscription]
12 Month + 1 XBOX Live Subscription

PSN+ Subscriptions and PSN Points:

$20 PSN Points
$50 PSN Points
12 Month PSN+ Subscription
3 Month PSN+ Subscription

We also have a Free-2-Play store supported by our GameConnect technology. Gameconnect allows you to link your Amazon.com account with free-2-play and MMO accounts so that you can buy things like in game currency, premium game time/subscriptions, in game items, etc. on Amazon.com using your Amazon.com payment options and have this content delivered directly into your game.

5. Price Matching notes: Generally we do not match international retailers (GMG, Gamersgate, etc) or physical retailers (Best Buy, Newegg.com, etc.)
To check out the Free-2-Play games we offer you can visit our storefront here: Free-2-Play Store

All Steam games have DRM, it is called Steam.
Not 100% entirely.

There's a grey area.

Naturally, you're gonna have to download your game from Steam if you get a Steam-version. No choice in the matter.

And of course - if you like, go back-up your files elsewhere on CD's, DVD's, BR, another HDD, USB thumb-drive, whatever...to save download-time - especially on bigger-sized files; and especially if you don't have a fast Net connection/provider.

But, it's after that - where things get interesting.

Some games, they don't come w/ CEG.

When they don't come w/ CEG and don't come w/ any 3rd party crap, it's basically DRM-FREE.

From here, you could do a few different things:

A. Just keep the client-program closed - just boot the game from its unprotected EXE file from the actual game-folder.

If it won't boot Steam, but it'll boot your game - you're good to go; it's CEG-FREE and DRM-FREE.

Also, it's wise - outside of Steam, make a shortcut directly from the game-folder of your unprotected EXE from Windows Explorer/My Computer; and you can always launch the game from that, from off your desktop if you want to avoid booting Steam for whatever reason.

[SIDE NOTE: Any time you're within Steam and you create a shortcut w/in Steam, you're creating a shortcut that essentially will always force Steam to boot, when you run THAT particular EXE - whether it's CEG-protected or NOT.]

B. You can basically copy the game-folder somewhere else and just run the EXE from the game-folder. If it boots, great - it's CEG-FREE + DRM-FREE.

[SIDE NOTE: Basically, to get Wizardry 8 Steam-version to run, you MUST do this - b/c it wants the game-files for some reason forced into C:\Wiz8 folder. Quirky old-game issues for you. They probably never tested the game to run w/ Steam overlay or they hard-coded it to work in only that folder, for some reason - God knows.]

If you get a Steam error of some kind when you try this trick - then it has Steam's CEG-DRM + requires Steam.

Also, always worth checking this thread on GOG for what games don't come w/ CEG and are DRM-FREE:

Hey guys,

I'm trying the Gummi Bear challenge this week (likely tomorrow). Gonna try and take down a 5lb Gummi Bear in 90 minutes. We're definitely recording it and might stream it.

Anyone interested in watching?

Cheers,
Tony
Surely I'll be at work. So, make a recording too.
I have a bad feeling about this...

This happens with every single game I buy, it always pops up in a bundle within a month of me buying it >.> ...and it remains untouched!
FTFY

Yep, there's a whole category for "think of an idea for a mod".

Also, you get a free copy of Thief Gold just for entering...

Cheers,
Tony
Hmm the submit button in "Claim your free game" tab isn't working? After I filled up my name and email then clicked submit, the page just refreshed. Or am I missing something?

You have to "enter" the contest to get the code, which requires uploading a video.. I think.

Makes sense. It will be better if they can put the "Enter the contest" at the first or number those tabs so I wont get confused :D

Yeah, you either need to upload a video of a mod you have made, or write out details for a mod you would like to be made.
This isn't how we discussed executing. I believe it is just broken. Already called Square to fix it. Stay tuned.

Cheers,
Tony

Anyone wanna go to E3?

This is super rad:

Let me know if you have any questions!

Tony
I say we skip all the formalities and stuff and just give me the tickets.

Save a whole bunch of time for everyone. People would not have to enter any ideas or work on mods. Judges would not have to watch hours and hours of stupid mods or read thousands of bad ideas because people just wanted a free game.

And yes I skipped the sarcasm font on purpose :)

I'd rather write out the details to my mod than do a video of me blabbering about it - hehe.

I write, type, and create much more eloquently, especially when compared w/ my (lack of) social skills.

All my ideas are Gold - just like Thief Gold. ;)

You just wait until I enter the contest and Square-Enix and Tony sees & reads what I kind of insanity I have planned for Garrett. ;)

So you don't want to hear about my idea for a Thief Gold + Seduce Me crossover?

Cargo Commander  C4RZB-9NGPH-W_ _ _ _          _ _ _ _ before H0EZ

Incecticide   JGLZ0-5BM6J-0_ _ _M       "Do you want me to get my d&!k out again?"

Kung Fu Strike   TX6Y8-XK_ _M-2DGD0       What you type when you add: 10 SCVs + 6 enemy Zerglings + 0 finished Barracks.

Legendary    3_ _Q3-CRZ4I-HAINF      Cthulhu's daddy

All Steam codes.

Who here hates themselves and wants to spread that hate to one of their friends?

Because if you do, just be the first to redeem this: LZLQ0-0G7MT-W5IVN

Afterward, you can appreciate the "hardcore and realistic nature of the game" which includes a bizarre lean, an AI as intelligent as rocks, and the amazing ability to disconnect from the host when you're playing a single player session.  You'll swear that the developers didn't contribute anything other than maybe fetching coffee for the SWAT and Rainbow Six series.

Tony,

May I direct you to this prior participant's video that includes the expected side effects. He became quite the hero on FunnyJunk for his bravery.

Youtube

Hero of the Kingdom and Hero Siege appearing in so many bundles at the same time, suddenly it doesn't make one feel like a hero if he or she bought these games prior to these bundles.

We can team up and I'll take the HDX kindle and E3 is yours!!!

On another note if anyone ends up with a spare Marlow Briggs we might could work out a deal :whistle2:$

For the Need For Speed games, is the latest best to jump in on?
NFS Rivals is pretty amazing. I've pre-ordered it from Amazon for full price and never regretted it.

It is capped at 30fps and has no Anti Aliasing which is stupid for a 2013/2014 game but gameplay is fun and for that price, it is a no brainer.

By the way Tony, I've checked recently and my NFS Rivals pre-order didn't come with any bonus promised on Amazon.com back then (except the $5 credit which I got). I've contacted CS yesterday and they said : "Upon researching I see that we have not offered any promotions or offers on this item" which is not true. Can you help with that ? I think the pre-order packs should come in a separate Origin code that I've never recieved.
