Another way for the resident morons in Congress to waste time and money

They're probably doing it to appease people without having to actually spend any $. I know that as a math major, they've certainly appeased me with National Pi Day.

Yes, without spending much money (it does take quite a bit of money to keep Congress operating, so using it for these sorts of things, as well as staff time, does cost us quite a bit). Such things, which run into the millions of dollars in costs to us poor saps (aka taxpayers), are relatively small potatoes of course. The real loss is Congress's time. They have yet to pass the fiscal year 2010 budget, yet we've been in FY '10 since I believe October.

When they announce Pi day, you know America is thinking 'apple or cherry?'

The Pi thing reminds me of Stranger in a Strange Land, where a state (I think Alabama) passes legislation that Pi = 3 because "it's easier."
