Any CAGs play City of Heroes?

I bought this game on launch day (almost 3 years ago now). I remember thinking that this game was great, but it got repetitive after like 2 or 3 weeks for me. Maybe its because I didn't get to a high enough level (I only got to around level 15) to fully enjoy the game, but it seemed like I was just going to be killing mobs of thugs for an eternity.

I've recently been interested in playing again and I'm wondering how far this game has come since launch because that's around the time I played. Is this game less repetitive now? I know with the release of City of Villains, PVP was added. Is the PVP fun? What has changed? What was added?

I also realize that I wasn't playing with anyone I knew, so that probably made my experience less enjoyable. Are there any CAGs that play and is there a CAG super group?

I played for about 7 months, and I'm kind of looking to get back into it as well.. I'm interested in knowing what's changed too. A CAG supergroup sounds cool, I'd be surprised if we don't have one already.

It would be fun if a bunch of us CAGs started new heroes and played through the game together. Does anyone else play or looking to play?

I gave it a 3 month trial back in 2005. Lost intrest pretty quick after I couldn't make a hero without some clown pensioning it and forcing me to make a new one. However they could never pension my Agent K from MIB (made him look EXACTLY like an MIB character with big gun and shades!) muhaha

You'll need City of Villains if you want to access your Super Group's base. If you plan to subscribe to CoH, you should definitely get it anyway since it can be found in most places for $10 and still only one monthly fee.

Has the game changed since launch? Besides new powers, maps, more costumes, epic archetypes, etc., the core gameplay hasn't changed much, though it is more player-friendly now with some updates, such as only getting 50% debt indoors and the addition of exemplars, which are like the opposite of sidekicks. If you quit at level 15 before, you definitely missed out on a lot of the good missions and story arcs, as the game doesn't really hit its stride until around level 30. (Not to mention, you have much better powers at 30 than the two or three attacks and a travel power at 15.) Admittedly, the grind is a bit steep, and debt certainly doesn't help, but CoX has the best community of any online game IMO, and I can't tell you how fun it is when you find a good team or SG.

The game is a bit repetitive, as heroes mainly fight only bad guys and rescue civilians. One new thing about the game is the Safeguard missions, where you tune into your police radio for any crimes happening currently. After you complete a couple of these, you'll get a primary mission to stop a bank robbery. Of course, it's not as fun as the villains' equivalent, Mayhem missions, in which you rob the bank (and having to break out of jail when you get captured). Generally speaking, villains are more fun to play since they fight heroes and villains alike, allowing for more variety in missions, and even CoV's early maps rival the best designed maps in CoH.

A new feature that had quite a bit of controversy is Enhancement Diversification. That is, you can't slot your powers with too many of the same enhancements, as the improving effects they have on your powers greatly diminish past the second or third.

PvP is pretty fun too. The highest level PvP zone, Recluse's Victory (Lord Recluse is the main villain in this game) actually changes depending on whether heroes or villains are winning. You can watch a trailer of it on Youtube:

If you're looking to start new characters, you should know that each of the 12 servers has its own reputation. For example, Freedom is the most populated server, Virtue is the role-playing server, Liberty is the friendlist server, etc. Currently, there's no way to transfer characters between servers.

Wow, thanks for all of that information. A few questions I have:

What are epic archetypes?
What is each server best known for? (I know you listed a few)
Do you play and if so, which server?

Epic archetypes are characters that can shapeshift. They can only be unlocked by having a lvl 50 hero. Currently, there's two - Peacebringer and Warshade - but others have been announced. You can read about them here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Character_creation_in_City_of_Heroes_and_City_of_Villains#Archetypes

You can read about the servers and their locations here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Servers_of_City_of_Heroes_and_City_of_Villains

I don't play often, but I have a hero on Champion and a villain on Freedom. Feel free to ask any other questions you may have.

I'm an avid CoH/CoV player and I think the added content is great. If you've never played City of Villains, you should definitely give it a try. The new powersets are fun.

I think a lot of it does depend on playing with people you like/know. Personally, I do pvp, but not all the time. Sometimes when the mood strikes me. The high level content is nice and challenging. I have a bunch of people I play with frequently in the game, including my supergroup (villaingroup), so its pretty fun for me.

If any CAGs do decide to start playing, feel free to look me up. My global handle is @Simone (no period).

Edit: I play mainly on the Justice server.

BUMP FOR GREAT JUSTICE!

so i was cleaning my room and my closet the other day i found an unused City of Heroes time card in my closet, so i decided to activate my CoH/CoV account because they added all this new content and its double xp weekend this week.

so i was wondering, do any CAGs still play CoH/CoV?

or is anyone interested in starting up their account again?

Heck I still have my CoV CE I bought two years ago for 5 bucks from Microcenter. I have two unused SWG time cards.

I just don't have the patience to level up characters anymore. The changes to SWG knocked the wind out of my MMORPG days. I was really trying to hold out for Star Trek: Online but that just fell apart and just decided not to get involved in the whole MMORPG mess.

I was thinking about playing since mmorpg.com just released a new 2 week trial, but I know I'm not going to stay with it for very long since my budget won't allow it. I'm trying to figure out if it's really worth bothering at all.

Of all the MMO's I've tried playing, CoV lasted the shortest amount of time. I think I played for the first month and was already bored so I did not renew. Do the dungeons become less repetive at higher level? Because they were awful at the lower levels.
I still play. My global is @Simone, look me up if you want.
i'll look you up. my global handle is @Iceiz. i'm playing on the Pinnacle server tho, which is moderately populated
Okay, no problem. I'll be on later, say hi. I also have some low level characters on Freedom.
cool, i have two low level characters on freedom as well

This game is one of my biggest regrets as a gamer.

I bought it when I set up my internet after I moved through Best Buy. BB had a deal where you got a GC and I used it to get City of Heroes b/c I didn't have a 360 or Wii yet.

At the time of purchase I had no idea you needed to pay a monthly fee. So I decided to return it. Being the procrastinating jackass that I am, I waited past 30 days and never got to return it. It is still citing in the back of my entertainment center.

How much is the monthly fee? Can you play at all (any part of it, for example a single player campaign) w/out having to pay the monthly fee?

I've never played a MMO, (but have been WoW curous for a while now) if I decide to give it a try and pay the monthly fee, is this a good one to start?

15 bucks...One of the good things I learned about this is that you can have 10 characters PER SERVER PER ACCOUNT vs SWG 1 character PER server, PER ACCOUNT.

FYI i think CC has the timecards for the game on sale for cheap. Like $10 for a 60 or 90 day card. I played for a few years and had some fun, got a few toons to max lvl, etc.

I definitely enjoyed it but don't think i'd have the time to commit to playing it more although if i can get a few cheap time cards I might play it again for a bit
