That's insane! "We don't want our ads posted that will be on in a week anyways". It's like when a company takes down movie trailers off youtube, it's an ad, what's the issue?
The youtube is a poor compairson since copyright laws require that holders enforce the copyrights...if they don't, they can be stripped of the copyright...so it may be the baby with the bathwater at times but that's the way the law works....A better example is this.....
Say you had a machine that tell you baseball scores for games for the next or two week...Ignoring the opportunities for gains via gambling (a la back to future 2), the teams and TV networks would be rather upset that attendance/ratings would be fall on the games that are known losers. The prices on items isn't too much different than the baseball scores...While most new stuff falls in a fairly narrow price band, stuff for older items is much more varied....If you knew that TV show boxset X was on sale next week, you would just wait for it, even though prior to knowing this, you were prepared to pay much more today for it...That's lost revenue and profits for retailers...yes they are putting out ads saying the price, and yes they are perfectly willing to sell the items at that price during the sales period but they don't want that knowledge to be out weeks in advance since it will impact buying behavior prior to sale starting. Given that they are spending millions and millions to print and distribute the circulars, they might feel that, you know, the circulars should be working for their benefit and not to their detriment.
