Hi,
I know this isn't the best site to be asking, but I figured any help would be better than no help. Anyway, I've been skateboarding for the past 10 years or so. About a week ago while filming a video a sharp but thin piece of my board went through my hand. It went in about an inch deep and it went sideways. Within secons my whole hand was covered in blood as was my jeans and skateboard. Luckily I wasn't too far from home so I cleaned up and tried to stop the bleeding, which finally subsided after a few hours. Now about a week later the cut has healed but my hand hurts like crazy. Sometimes it is fine but other times I can't even move it without being in excruciating pain. Its swollen and today it looks bruised. Anyone know what this could be? I'm thinking maybe the piece tore my muscle or something? Or maybe there's still a piece in there? Anyone have any ideas? The pain is really bad sometimes so I'll probably end up going to the doctor anyway on Monday to have it checked out but was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas beforehand.

Thanks,
THPS

Can you put any pressure on where the cut was and feel if there's something there? I'm guessing the pain would be too much to do that though. If the bruising that you can see is roughly the same shape/size as the piece that went in and the original cut, chances are good that you've still got a piece stuck in there. You'll probably have to get it surgically removed if you say the cut has healed over as some muscle has probably filled out around it.

Dude, go to the freaking hospital and get some X-Rays. I mean, nothing anyone can say on here will make it better. So if it's really hurting bad, go now.

I'm not a dr. but an emt. It could be a miriad of things. Infection, left over wood inside, tissue damage. Like you said yourself, going to the dr. is the best route. Have it checked out . If you don't, you run the risk of it getting worse or whatever dmg there is might become irreparable the longer you wait.

Thanks for all the help everyone, I took another look at it and I'm really starting to think that a decent sized piece is still there. When I move it certain ways it hurts really bad like something is getting poked, and there is a pretty large bump to the side of the cut where the piece went in. I'm not one to usually go to the doctor or hospital but I think I'll have this one checked out since I've had plenty of objects impaled into my body in the past and nothing has been like this, so it probably isn't good. My insurance covers shit and I get injured a lot so usually I just suck things up but I guess I'll give in and see a doctor.

i broke a tip of a pencil off in my leg 22 years ago and its still in my leg. I can still see the black tip in my leg (skin grew over it)

best to go to the doctor . probally brused your muscle. I got into a car wreck and wacked my hand in the wheel and it was sore for 6 weeks (hand even blew up 4x the normal size but nothing was broke

Ouch...that must have hurt real bad.

Also thanks for all the tips everyone, I'm going on Monday to see the doctor. The bad pain I was having before has dimished somewhat, I think driving earlier and having the hand curled is what was irritating it. And as for the previous question about impalements, those were all skateboarding-related for the most part. Skateboarding over a period of about 10 years is going to bring injury, I've had them all. A lot of times I'll fall and land on sharp objects I don't see, things ranging from sharp metal points sticking out of the ground, blades, scrap metal, anything you can think of. A lot of times I have to go to certain spots at night because of security and cops giving me a hard time about skating during the day, so often times I don't see sharp objects and end up falling on them and becoming impaled on them.

Anyway, thank you for all the help everyone, you've all convinced me to go to the doctor and get help which is probably the best thing to do in this situation.

I'm a doctor, though I'm a neurologist so I don't specialize in your type of injury. But as a rule, any penetrating hand injury needs to have immediate medical attention as hand injuries tend to heal very poorly on their own due to a relatively limited blood supply. You especially need to make sure there are no fractures as they definitely will not heal on their own and the injured bone can die if not treated properly.

Everything he said. Can you move your fingers at all? Where does it hurt most? Where does the pain start dissipating? How big was the splinter? Do you have pics of the injury?
Basically, you should see a doctor, cuz we can diagnose you over the internets.
