I'm in the market to replace my old SD video camera. I was looking to buy a Canon Vixia until I found out the video outputs as some odd file extension. Is this normal for all HD video cameras? I don't want to have to load software that comes with the camera to edit my videos.

TIA

What are you looking to film? The way I feel is that Cameras now-a-days serve the purpose of multi-tasking as, well, regular cameras for taking pictures, as well as recording HD video. Here's what I have: http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Cyber-sh...FX0C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1332278959&sr=8-1

It takes amazing quality photos, has a massive zoom for a compact digital camera, and has an impressive 1080/60p dedicated HD video mode. The end result is very close to what you can expect with DSLRs.

I agree. I use a Canon T3i and it takes amazing video, and it offers several different recording options. It records straight to an SD card with .MOV files which most video editing programs support.

The T2i is cheaper and just as good, but it doesn't have a swivel screen.

We're going on a cruise in the next few weeks, and would like a nicer video camera than what we have(freebie from Club Bing). I've thought about a new P&S camera, but wasn't sure of the video quality compared to a true HD video camera.

The quality shouldn't be one to worry about. 1080p at 60fps is going to be over-the-top quality as it is. The things that you should be worried about are the mic and zoom. The microphones in digital cameras are usually small because of the size of the camera itself, thus the sound quality suffers a little. Some digital cameras really have superb mics though, so you may have to do some testing. The next thing you'll have to worry about is the zoom. If you're going to want 30x/60x zoom, a digital camera won't be enough. The zoom could be used to zoom in on islands far out at sea. Then again, you'll also need a tripod if you want to zoom to max as things can get really shaky when you're zooming out that far. My 16x zoom can fill the frame with the moon, if that gives you an idea and things aren't too bad with it's stabilization feature.

Here's a review on my camera (all shot by the HX9V), I love this review as it shows real-life uses: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cz2FH_imSM

Here's some test video on the Panasonic HDC SD80, some really nice scenes in here (Top selling HD Camcorder on Amazon): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DF0klIdL0y0
