Anyone had their wisdom teeth taken out?

Couple weeks gonna have mine taken out and just curious what to expect afterwards.

I fucking hate the dentist. Ive had surgery and told them to not put me out so I could watch while they did it, closed up my own wounds and everything else but I can not stand the dentist, its the only thing I dont have nerves for. Im hoping they just gas me out.

I chose not to have any pain killers (except Advil) when I had mine taken out so my mouth hurt pretty bad for a few days. Is it an awesome experience, well no obviously but it's not too bad if you don't have any complications afterwords (which I didn't).

I got knocked out for having all four of mine removed. No gas, they actually used an IV, and I was gone for the rest of the day. Then they gave my vicodin, so that made recovery quite fun. It actually wasn't too bad of an experience, I healed really quickly just because I followed their directions.

Went to an oral surgeon, they injected me, I went sleepy time, then woke up 20 minutes later with no more wisdom teeth. Make sure and stock up on soups, instant mash potatoes, and pudding. No solid foods for a while. MMMM cheese and garlic mash potatoes. LOL. Good luck.

The week I got my wisdom teeth pulled is the week I almost committed suicide. The excruciating pain was just unbearable to the point where I just repeatedly punched my face till it broke in multiple places .

Haha j/k it isn't that bad ........ as long as you have some spare marijuana just incase

I had mine out in January. Mine had been erupted for about 9 years, so all I had was local anesthesia which was actually the worse part. 9 or 10 painful injections in every part of my gums. I had no pain from the extractions, but the crunching as the surgeon ripped the tooth out of my mouth was an experience I don't think I need again.

I had no pain, swelling, or bruising right after. The first few hours were the worst, only because of all the bleeding which took a while to stop. I only took ibuprofen, but stopped after 1 day because of stomach pains.

The 3rd and 4th day I had aching in my jaw and felt like I was teething but couldn't actually chew on anything to relieve the pain.

Getting food in the sockets sucks too, stay away from anything not liquidy for the first few days, mashed potatoes are your best friend. It took about 10 days for the clot to form some gum and it's been 3 months and I still have holes in my jaw.

I had two removed with just local anesthetic, my insurance wouldn't cover being put under and I am too cheap. The only part that bothered me was the sound of the teeth being broken-free as they were removed. I was prescribed vicodin afterwards, but I didn't use any.

I got mine done about 5 years ago. I didn't know what the IV was for and was out before I could even ask. I don't remember anything between the injection and 4 hours later waking up in my bed with gauze in my mouth. I took minimal Vicodin and was fortunate to heal quickly with no complications.

Have a bucket bedside just in case the pain, blood and drugs overcome you when you come back around to feeling feelings.

I think I was 16 or 17 when I had mine cut out. I was knocked out for the procedure itself and mine went pretty well - no real pain or swelling afterwards. It varies though, you should get a nice prescription of Vicodin, I didn't use any of mine. My brother's didn't turn out as well before me though, he threw up some with pain and swelling.

Make sure to get plenty of pain killers... enjoy the next few days off. pick up a new game or two... you'll spend some time on the couch after

Had two taken out while awake, and two taken out when under.

First two weren't bad - you feel the pressure. The grinding noises make you want to puke though, and when it actually snaps, you sort of go into shock for a few seconds and feel all shakey afterward. Second two went easier - they asked me to count down from 100, I got to 97. Then I woke up to be shoveled into the car, and when I got home, I apparently pretended I was a zombie and trudged around the house trying to scare people. Took a nap, got up, hung out with friends.

The only bad part for me was a few days after the second two, where I suddenly felt TERRIBLE. I'd been driving all day and suddenly was just wracked with pain and overwhelming discomfort, burning up and feeling fatigued but like everything was rushing past me. Got home, took a shower, laid down with a fan on, felt fine the next day.

Really it's not that bad overall. Get some meds, have fun with them, and get snowcones and ice cream. Feels good man.

I had all 4 of might taken out about 7 years ago and woke up from the anesthesia about half way through. I couldn't move or scream for them to stop, but I eventually was able to shake violently when they cut into me. Probably the worst experience of my life...

Oh and I got 2 dry sockets within a few days...

I was put under for mine (had all 4 removed at the same time). Ate a lot of soup and took a lot of pain killers for about a week. Recovery really wasn't that bad. What you really need to worry about (though you have absolutely no control over it) is a dry socket. That happens when the wound starts to heal incorrectly and I was told that the pain is horrible. Luckily I was sent home with extra meds in case that happened.

Of course, that's the week and I played (and beat) Jak and Daxter 1. I have no recollection of it, went back to play it later and absolutely hated it. Pain killers can fuck you up :p

had 2 of mine out 3 weeks ago. Going for the other 2 next week. My insurance only covered novacaine needles. I didnt feel any pain but i did feel the pressure of him pulling at my teeth & the god awful sound of cracking. there wasnt pain but watching him jerk them around in my mouth was a terrifying experience.
I was spitting blood till the next day. use a mix of hot & cold compression on your face to try to keep the swelling down. it did not hurt at all for 2 days. Then the pain started. it was a constant throbing in my jaw. motrin helped for that. they gave me vicodin but i only used it once (my gf has terrible back pain so i tried to save it for her). I did it on a thurs. night & was back to work on tue. I could have made it monday but i wanted to be extra sure.
With all that said It was not as bad as it sounds. uncomfortable, yes. but managable. Make sure to get all the foods ppl have talked about already but they missed pasta.

Be careful when drinking through a straw, smoking or sucking on ice. These things can cause you to pull out the "blood plug" where your tooth used to be, creating a dry socket.

I don't know how true this is, but I've always been told to avoid beer, wine and any cultured foods for at least 3 days as they contain bacteria that can cause an infection. (Smoking is not recomended for 3 days as well but if you go slow you should be okay.)

never had mine removed, and i'm 29. my upper right one has fully come in years ago and has never bothered me- so i've not felt the need to have it hacked out :)

Dry sockets are what you have to watch for. No straws. I don't know what was worse, the pain of the extraction or the dentist trying to shove clovers and gause into the dry socket (which came out the next day anyway).

Got mine done like five years ago (I was 17). They put the needle in my arm, and when I woke up, they were gone. That night sucked, because I had to keep going to the sink to spit out blood (the gauze really wasn't doing its job), but after that, it was alright. They gave me two pills to take (painkiller and antibiotic, I think). If my memory serves me correctly, I was back to eating regular food the next day, although I ate really slowly and was very careful to not use my molars at all. Get some jello to snack on, though.

Only once during the week after the surgery was the pain bothering me enough to the point where I had to leave whatever it was I was doing and go back home to take my pills.

I got mine out a few years ago and had no problems and very little pain (my pillow case did get quite bloody, though).

And my xbox 360 had come back from the red ring doctor that day also, only to red ring again after 30 minutes of playtime. At least I had Vicodin.

OK soup broth Ill be stocking up on them.

I dont plan on taking any pain medication though, I really hate feeling sluggish or not in control of my faculties, Id rather deal with the pain. If they offer me some torodol though I may take it.

All I care about is stopping the damn problems Im having now. For along time now my front teeth have this pressure on them that makes me want to pull them out with pliars. And my gums bleed every once in awhile from the wisdom teeth pushing my teeth together. Luckily they are all still straight and not crossing over or getting shoved out of line.

i had two of mine removed, gas did nothing for me, the pain of them cracking them in half was brutal. i iced my face every few hours, went to work the next day and never had any problems
be ready when the painkillers wear off....boo-yao!

try scheduling it on a Friday morning, so you'll have 3 full days to recover.
Sad part is I lost my job, so no work to go to.

Course about time I lost it my grandad had to have vertebroplasty done twice in a week and cant walk now without a walker and my grandma isnt in to hot a shape so I been over there working on their house and doing stuff for them.

I had all four out when I was younger, I ate breakfast so they could only do Nitrous Oxide and Novocaine. I was out of my mind but I could still feel some pain and the cracking of the teeth. I was laughing during the surgery but it hurt in the afternoon.

1. Eat high quality baby food, you can't eat solid foods for a couple days.
2. Eat ice cream.
3. Get some dissolving breath mints.
4. Don't tear your stitches, no yelling and keep the talking to a minimum.

I did. I had four teeth pulled out. The recovery actually wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I never needed the pain pills. I was back in school within a couple days.

I had all four taken out at once while asleep. The pain wasn't all that, but my mouth was swollen for a few days, was hard to eat.

Same thing here. Looked like Mike Tyson used me for a punching bag for a few days. They had some trouble getting two of the four out.

I got mine removed a couple of years ago. Forgot to ask the doctor to give me the removed wisdom teeth. Still regretting it now. Would've been a good trophy.

If you plan on keeping it, ask your doctor first before going to surgery because you'll be feeling groggy after and it will be the last thing on your mind, what with all the blood gushing from your mouth.

It's not getting them pulled you have to worry about. It's the stupid shit you do when you get out of the office high off your ass on anesthesia and painkillers. My best friend danced in the parking lot and didn't remember any of it.

I loved having my wisdom teeth pulled out. I had a valium a hour before and a shot of novacaine at the onset. After propping my mouth open and setting the salivavac to suck, they sliced open my gums. With the teeth exposed, they took a pair of pliers and crushed the unwanted teeth. With the smell of blood and the exposed innards of my teeth thick in the air, they picked the pieces of the teeth out and dug around in the incision for any leftover roots for a good 30 minutes.

Best Christmas ever.

Mine were impacted and I had all four cut out with no bleeding afterward and was taking 800 mg ibuprofen. Other than the swelling, it wasn't that bad.

Had all 4 taken out last year with 2 being impacted and causing super pain. Which made go to the dentist for the first time ever to figure out what the pain was from.

Just got the shots and was awake while he cracked them in half and yanked them out. Had my ipod on to make it less boring.

My recovery was alright i guess, sucked having to have gauze in my mouth to soak blood up and junk all the time. I had to go back after i recovered cause the impacted wisdom tooth in my upper left jaw actually cracked a molar it was next to. So i lost half of that tooth too, and had to get a crown on it.

Basically, i spent way to much time at the dentist office in a month. :p

Had mine out. All 4. Gave me an IV of Demerol, woke up with everything over. Took one pill afterwords then decided i didn't need them anymore. Pretty easy experience for me. The weirdest part was between getting the IV and passing out. Felt like I was breathing something weird during that time.

Dentist had a hard time numbing the area; 1 hour to numb, 5 min to pull 4 teeth out.

I was good enough to drive home, and work the next day.

You guys are cry babies, or my dentist was good, or I've got a super jaw and dead nerves. My trip to the dentist was painless.

Pulled 4 impacted teeth that had been out for 8 or more years. The needles made me tear up but they always do. I was awake for the whole thing, the dentist tried yanking one but I wasn't quite numb so he gave me another shot, wrestled with it - literally pulling my head upwards. He ended up having to cut me up a bit. The rest came out smoothly.

Didn't even take ibuprofen afterwards and went back to work the next day.

Biting myself and having to live with a sore is more painful. Then there's that time where I had a cavity patched up but bit into a chicken bone afterwards which struck a nerve and even eating a piece of bread was excruciating. I blame my crappy dentist for that (not the same doctor who pulled my teeth).

it really depends on your surgeon and yourself. i had mine taken out last summer i was 18 then. it didn't hurt as much as it was annoying, cause you have to get used to eating really slowly. but after a week it was much better. just make sure your wounds don't get infected!

I had all 4 of mine taken out at once (partially impacted). Signed a few papers then got an iv stuck in me and 30 minutes later woke up to a nurse telling me to bite down on the gauze and what to do when I got home.

The oral surgeon I used scheduled 2 or 3 follow up visits to check how it was healing, overall it was pretty painless. The Vicodin helped :p

My dental insurance covered the whole thing, if yours does you could just request they put you out. Some of my coworkers got to choose.

Same. 34 and my wisdom teeth have been trouble free.

I did have to see the dentist recently to fix a chipped tooth though. Turns out there was some decay underneath one of my fillings (a very old filling). Took a lot of drilling to dig the old material out, and the smoke and smell of metal-on-metal was a real treat. Needed a second shot of novacaine too because the first didn't take for some reason.

Got all four pulled last summer. I envy those of you who were knocked out; I was awake for mine. Granted, I was pretty numb, but two were a bitch to pull out and my throat dried out and my jaw got pretty tired by the end (took like 45 minutes I think). It was pretty awful after the novacaine wore off though.

Lots of gauze, vicoden if you need it, and sleep a LOT for a few days. Ice packs are a savior too.

Had mine taken out about three years ago. No real pain to speak of, no problems, and was up about 4 hours later. A little drowsy but other than that, I was eating regular food the next day.

Great surgeon I guess

It's a simple procedure. I don't understand why people hype it up as some sort of appendix removal of the mouth.

bread's done
