anyone with a tv/computer setup?

Achilles

CAGiversary!
i've got a 'extra' p4 that i thinking about permanently hooking up to my flatscreen. i'll do the wireless mouse/keyboard thing but was wondering what other people have or do.

what do you do for sound, just line out into your home stereo system?

i'll also need to get a tv tuner video card i guess... with hdcp.. and agp.

i'm kinda a newb at this, any suggestions would be appreciated.

I've got my computer hooked up to my LCD and it works out great except the text is a bit hard to read since it's only a 720p set and I sit like 6 feet away.

For the sound, I use my surround sound system though my TV does have an analog input for audio.

As for the TV tuner, I'm interested in one too and was thinking about getting the ATI TV Wonder Elite again. I used to have it back in the dorms but then got rid of it since I hardly used it. But now I'm finding that I want to record a lot of stuff so I might get that again.

But it's a PCI card, not sure of any good AGP TV tuners.

I hook my computer up to my TV... it works. I plug the sound shit into the receiver, though I know that my TV also has an input for a 3.5mm plug so you can use the TV speakers for computer audio if you want.

I have mine hooked up to my LCD. I use a wireless mouse and a wired keyboard (with an extension cable.) I have a stand next to my chair for the mouse pad and keep the keyboard on my lap. I just do line out to the TV, since the speakers on it are pretty good. I don't use a TV tuner.

I recommend leaving the TV screen settings flat, then adjusting the picture through your graphics card. Also, I had to bump the text and icon settings pretty high to make it all readable/look normal. At 720p/1080i, everything defaults to microscopic size.

You don't adjust the TV? I'm pretty sure you're supposed to adjust the TV and leave the video card as is, at least, if it works the same way DVD players do. Oh, this crazy world of calibration we live in.

You're TV tuner card is used to recieve a broadcast - not display a picture. So the AGP / HDCP part would fall on your video card. You probably don't need the HDCP part but it would be nice to have if you want to watch HDDVD or BRD in the future.

can't i get a tv tuner with hdcp on an agp card?

i want hdcp for hddvd stuff for later, but i admit its not a huge priority. tv tuner is so i can record stuff pvr style which is pretty important... am i missing anything else?

oh another question, how do you get 5.1 sound or better? assuming of course its encoded with it, which i'm guessing most torrents arent'...

TV tuners don't have video out. You plug the f-coaxial cable into the TV tuner to get cable, and then you plug the HDMI or DVI cable from the video card into the TV.

Additionally, 5.1 sound requires 5.1 speakers.

I found my graphics card settings were better at customizing the picture than the TV settings, which were not sensitive or varied enough. A combination of the two may have been better, but I thought man forget it, yo holmes to Bel Air

I have a mythtv box. Optical sound to the receiver. HDMI to the LCD teevee. Wireless mouse/keyboard (for me) and Logitech Harmony Remote (for Mrs. Speedracer).

Looks nice, sounds nice.

If you're wondering about torrents quality, then it can be reasonably stated that you probably don't need to buy a video card with HDCP or get a BluRay/HDDVD.

Just, *ahem*, torrent those versions.

ok mebbe i'm confused with my terminology. what i want is a card that can accept coax, display it on my lcd monitor/tv... is that not a tv tuner?

also does anyone have any suggestions for an AGP solution for me? or are the PCIe cards where its at?
