Arlen Specter will block Bush's conservative judges from the Supreme Court

CAGiversary!
I admire Arlen Specter (R-PA) for not having the balls to not side with the religious right that now control our country:

The Associated Press
Updated: 8:11 a.m. ET Nov. 4, 2004PHILADELPHIA - The Republican expected to chair the Senate Judiciary Committee next year bluntly warned newly re-elected President Bush against putting forth Supreme Court nominees who would seek to overturn abortion rights or are otherwise too conservative to win confirmation.

Sen. Arlen Specter, fresh from winning a fifth term in Pennsylvania, also said Wednesday that the current Supreme Court now lacks legal “giants” on the bench.

“When you talk about judges who would change the right of a woman to choose, overturn Roe v. Wade, I think that is unlikely,” Specter said, referring to the landmark 1973 Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion.

“The president is well aware of what happened, when a number of his nominees were sent up, with the filibuster,” Specter added, referring to Senate Democrats’ success over the past four years in blocking the confirmation of many of Bush’s conservative judicial picks. “... And I would expect the president to be mindful of the considerations which I am mentioning.”

With at least three Supreme Court justices rumored to be eyeing retirement, including ailing Chief Justice William Rehnquist, Specter would have broad authority to reshape the nation’s highest court. He would have wide latitude to schedule hearings, call for votes and make the process as easy or as hard as he wants.

Funny you mention this, I just called Senator Bill Frist's office to have Specter removed as Chairman of the Judiciary Committee because of that. I haven't called a Senator.... ever.

Oh, and yes, I voted for the man.

wow, what a badass!

Not sure how it works, but I think you get the job by seniority in the Senate. I could be wrong, though.

Honestly Bush isn't as conservative as everyone makes him out. He spends money like a liberal, and is flexible on a lot of traditional conservative platforms. This is why many of the hard line conservatives criticize him.

IMO the only abortion that should be banned is partial birth abortion, because that is just plain nasty.

Yes, it should be banned but there should be a clause that says if the mother and child are going to die the abortion is okay.

John Kerry is for that clause, but unfortunately Gearge W. Bush is against it.

Bush isn't against it, he just can't think that far ahead. Give him a break, being President is hard!

Your level of Conservatism reaches to new heights PAD. You literally disgust me. How about you get a Vagina, get raped, get pregnant or use some birth control then still get pregnant and have a MAN tell you you can't have an abortion. It's not your fucking body so it's not your choice PAD. You as a man can't seem to be able to place yourself in the other sexes shoe's.
Would I prefer women to carry to term and give the kid up for adoption in most cases? Yes but I repeat that it's HER body and her choice, that's what being Pro-Choice is all about, recognizing that choice.
Oh and props to Mr.Specter. I really wish both the Democratics and Republicans would tell the Religious Right to shut their fucking mouths for once because most Americans, INCLUDING most Republicans, don't want to listen or see the results of what they say. Americans need to make some votes clearly showing we can outvote them and they need to leave some of their moral issues at the door including Homosexuality because I know those religious peoples REAL problem with it.

The reason so many democrats voted for Specter is because of his clout and because he would be chairing the Judiciary Committee. If he doesn't chair that committee, say goodbye to Santorum next time he's up for re-election.

. I really wish both the Democratics and Republicans would tell the Religious Right to shut their shaq-fuing mouths for once because most Americans, INCLUDING most Republicans, don't want to listen or see the results of what they say.

Actually, I think the voters just told you to shut your mouth because the polls show that morals and values were the primary reason our great president was reelected.

You, my friend, are an idiot. This was tried in the election, and in case you weren't paying attention, the voters pwned you. Measures to ban gay marriage were on the ballots in 11 states, and every single one of them passed by a huge margin.
Hey PAD, did you vote against Specter in the primary? Were you a Tomey supporter or a Specter supporter?
Toomey supporter. I really didn't want him to win but wanted to put the fear of God into Specter.

There was no way I would vote aginst a Republican Senator, even Specter, this year. However his choices have been questionable. During the Clinton impeachment he voted "Not Proven" citing Scotish law; excuse me Senator Dumb fuck.... this isn't Scotland.

As much as I loathe Specter he brings more credibility to Pennsylvania's legislative agenda and best interests than Toomey would have as a first timer. He's the perfect example of "It's not my Congressman that's bad, it's yours." if I didn't live here. If I lived in Ohio I wouldn't understand how he kept getting elected.

Oh and for the readers I disgust, I'm pro-choice on my list of judicial concerns abortion isn't even in the top 10.

Heh, it makes sense that you're a Toomey supporter.

Oh, and if I may say, nobody owned anybody this election. It was close. But I do find it troubling that moral/ethical issues outweighed every other single issue. I think it shows a failure of the electorate. But that's my opinion and many would disagree.

Did I say "Gay Marriage"? I said their problem with Homosexuality? In all honesty the easiest and most sensible solution for people's beef against Gay Marriage is what John Stossel said. He basically called for the FINAL "Separation Of Church and State" by getting rid of the term Marriage for the government institution and instead changing it to Civil Unions and leaving "Gay Marriage" up to people's Churchs to decide and I see no problem with that.

John Stossel. Just another whining idiot.
Civil Unions were also banned by some of those state votes. :(
And the funny part is those people were filled with so much hatred that they also voted for tax hikes that were added onto those ammendments.

That is awesome!

Can we sneak a provision to save the enviornment in the next "Jesus Day" bill?
