Art Show in need of CAGs! You Can Easily Help!

First off let me tell you what is going to be happening. My sisters are two proffessional artists who colaberate with each other. This october they are putting out a solo show that will get publicised in a veriety off different press magazines abotu the art world. They have yet to come up with a name for the show, which is being shown by their gallerist (go to http://www.rocket-projects.com for more info). It is going to be a huge show and will most defenitly have an impact on the art scene globally... Mostly due to me (yes, ol'e lousy me) working with my sisters (colaberating) on video games that are art peices... in other words, interactive art. There is some cool stuff that will be shown on the room floor. :)

Now this is where all CAGs come in...

My sisters are putting together a magazine (actually, a zine) that is going to be given out at this show. In it, we will have different aticles and just cool little thingys. I/We need a list of games that you think are in some way a very artistic or creative peice of work... mostly focusing on the artistic visual aspects as these lists will be handed out mainly to non-gamers, but artists in which I hope to make into gamers. If you can, list games (with short descriptions if you don't think there is much people know about it) that fill this description. I also need you to state why you think these games are creative or artistic... feel free to counteract other peoples opinion as this is totally out in the open. Links and pics also help. Be creative. I also don't mind people reposting the same games as other people. Also, the games can be from any generation of systems, either handheld, arcade, system, or other, just as long as it was or is available in america or will be this year, jus tmake sure to state which system each game runs on.


Once I get the list together and the magazine printed out, cheapassgamer.com will get 100% and will be noted for creating the list/given total credit and the web adress will be on the same page (will talk about this further hopefully with CheapyD in the near future).

I dunno, perhaps the Final Fantasy series and God of War (that I can think of right now) brought their own fantasy worlds to life. I guess I'm mentioning them for their storyboard & behind the scene artistic value. Also Katamari Damacy should be noted for creativity.
 
I remember buying an import version of Jet Set Radio without knowning an ounce of Japanese, just to get that crazy ass thrill of tagging up stuff that I probably would never do. (Mind you, this was on the first level where you had to learn how to blade around, once I hit the latter stages I was like "woah".)

Very cool/underrated game.
 
this may be dumb to ask, but I am dumb enough to ask so here goes:

cheapy, you think it would be possible or even appropriate to sticky this? if not, that's fine... just wondering.
 
I recently re-started ICO, again, and I think I am missing the boat with this one. I'd say I have only touched on 20% of the game, but thus far I see nothing but grainy, washed out graphics and tedious game play. I care nothing for either the story or characters at this point. I keep trying to tell myself this is a four year old game and to keep going, but if the game truly is worthy of classic status, age shouldn't be an issue.

Cinematically, I'd say the images and camera movement in God of War rival those of Hollywood. I also found many of the worlds in Paper Mario 2 to be very artistic with clever animations and transitions. Finally, Okami seemed to get a lot of attention at this year’s E3 for its art style.
 
Don't forget:

Wanda and the Colossus - the sequel to ICO. The name changed recently; I think it's "Shadow of the Colosssus" now, even though I thought the former sounded more artistic. You play a boy who travels the world with his horse searching for these magnificent giants. What really struck me about this storyline is that these legendary giants are thousands of years old, maybe a few as old as the world itself, but you have to slay them to save your lover.

Guilty Gear XX - Sammy's 2D fighter is incredible not just for its amazingly balanced system (combos do less damage with each consecutive hit; uninterruptible burst attacks instantly knock down your opponent but do no damage - perfect for getting out of a tough spot), but this game looks and feels like you're playing an animé. The animations are very fluid and seamless, and the turn of the tide can turn as quickly as you blink.

Viewtiful Joe - play it and see.

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3 - I'm gonna admit rite now that I hate anything and everything DBZ, but I know a good game when I see one, and this is a good game. It definitely feels like you're in the DBZ universe with characters and moves straight out of the series, and the gameplay is fast and fluid.

Ikaruga - this shooter combines 3D graphics with 2D gameplay, and the results are just amazing. Your ship could change colors - either black or white - and that determines whether you live or die. Definitely my favorite twitch shooter.

Vib-ribbon - an old PS1 game, this game shows that you don't need great graphics for a great game. The graphics consist of just a black background with white lines.

Mortal Kombat 2 - for its pseudo-photorealistic graphics. This game spawned a lot of shoddy imitations, but it's arguably the best in the series.

Guild Wars - even though this game is instanced, it did a great job of making me believe I was in another world with beautiful scenery and fearful monsters. Most of the backgrounds are inaccessible, but that does little to detract from the beauty. The graphics need no explanation here, my God, the graphics...

Medal of Honor: Frontline - don't get it confused with Allied Assault, the PC version. I was really surprised with this one since I like my first-person shooters with a keyboard and mouse, but Frontline was very frantic and tense from the landing at Omaha Beach to the war-torn cities of France, occasionally sprinkled with areas of boredom and indifference, which I imagine war would really be like. Allied Assault just felt like a really great game, but wasn't very immersive; at best, it felt like I was watching Saving Private Ryan.

Final Fantasy IX - I thought this one was the most artistic, with a world that's half-fantasy, half-medieval. The backgrounds were amazing, and the super-deformed characters help to lighten the mood. This is the only RPG I've played that made me actually care for all the characters.

Katarmi Demacy - just by the title, you knew you were in for a treat.

Jet Li: Rise to Honor - felt just like a Hong Kong movie.

Lesser mentions: Metal Slug, King of Fighters, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Megaman X4, Sonic CD, Metal Gear Solid, Parappa the Rapper, Tetris Attack, Puzzle Fighter, Kingdom Hearts, Onimusha, Dead or Alive 3, Beyond Good and Evil, Xenosaga, Chrono Cross.
 
World of Warcraft: The Game Mimics the Style of the RTS while being able to run on almost any computer

Also Klonoa for the PS2: one of the first games to use Cel-Shading (except for JSR) and full of original looking characters

If you're going to have a sci-fi example, Metroid Prime is probably the best for that.
 
A few I'd add:

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker - The cel graphics are absolutely astounding, during some of the cutscenes it seemed more like an animated movie than a game. Probably one of the best games at uniting fantastic artistic graphics with excellent immersive gameplay.

Tron 2.0 - I'm playing through this now, and I have been amzed at the artistic quality of the graphics. Everything is just bursting with bright colors, shiny pools of energy, shimmering bridges of light; it really is like stepping into a fantasy computer world.

Grim Fandango - Besides being one of the best adventure games ever, GF has an amazing artistic design, turning art from Mexican culture (mostly related to the Day of the Dead) into wonderful characters and backdrops.
 
Can;t believe no one has mentioned this yet. The one that sticks out in my head is "Out of This World." This game had fairly conceptual graphics for the SNES and really focused on looking cinematic. The game was rediculously hard, but once you found the correct way to solve the particular "scene" you could do it every time. This game really made you feel like you were living out a movie.

In the same vein, but not a console game: Dragon's Lair. The game was created by Don Bluth (I think) and was essentially an interactive cartoon.

You're not alone, but I think we're in the vast minority. I just didn't love this game as much as most people do.

As far as games that ARE art in and of themselves I'd go with Rez and Lumines and maybe Frequency/Amplitude, although Elektroplankton looks like it could be in this category as well.

As far as games that have the best art in them (or art direction), I'd have to say Katmari Damacy, Space Channel 5, Jet Grind Radio, Parappa the Rapper, Wipeout XL and Metroid Prime.

update: so far the planning for the show is going really well. As soon as my sisters give me the OK, i'll post up some info on how the show is going and how awsome it's going to be.
 
Ico's washed out graphics is one reason why it's considered beautiful. Everything's in a haze and almost dream like which fits the setting and not to mention it's different from most games in this aspect, although MGS 3 seems to use this in their cutscenes. But I agree I didn't feel anything for the characters nor the game.

Kingdom Hearts could be another game listed. It's not art house but no one can deny that it packed some beautiful art. The Disney feel/design really carried the game as the gameplay wasn't all that great. Probably wouldn't be a good idea to list but if you want to go all the way back to 16-bit, the Genesis version of Aladdin. When most games were still pixelated, Sega teamed up with Disney to recreate the magic that was found in the movie. It's aged really well.

Absolutely. The only way i can see someone not enjoying it is they have no soul. :D

The worst thing I could say about it is that there isn't really anything particularly innovative about the gameplay. But it was just a blast to play, I had a smile on my face the whole way through. Plus, I like to support these kind of efforts so I don't regret spending money on it all. Also Pricegrabber' s got a 5 dollar rebate offer for it.

The character design and art in Castlevania SOTN is awesome.
I second the vote for Okami, that game has amazing graphics.
Another one that has interesting art direction is Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne.
