Assassin's C: Revelations' Templar Dens are pissing me off

Wolfpup

CAGiversary!
I've heard kind of negative things about this game (and 3 for that matter), and...yeah it's starting to tick me off.

Going to rant, and if anyone has tips for how to deal with this mechanic, I'd love to hear 'em!

Okay, so I love Assassin's Creed, BUT I think this yearly  pace is nuts.  I mean instead of one gigantic team making them and taking 3-5 years or whatever, they've got what, 5 gigantic teams pumping them out in one?  I think in Brotherhood and especially this that's starting to show.

To my surprise, I've actually liked the story so far.  But what's pissing me off is the Templar/Assassin's Den mechanic.  I don't like having to take them in the first place, and then to have them fall and have to win them back?!?  Umm, no thanks.  And the tower defense game they've layered on there is teeeeeerrible.  I kind of like tower defense, but this is just baaaad.  The graphics don't work for it so it's visually confusing, it's just not fun, and too hard.

I thought they were layering too much 'stuff' on top of the core gameplay in Brotherhood, but at least the new stuff was FUN, if distracting.  This?  I don't like the bombs.  The gameplay is already confusing enough and doesn't need yet another thing.  I haaaate the "the templars win stuff back" mechanic.  I haaaaate the tower defense game.  It told me I could start hiring assassin's, I guess like in Brotherhood for missions, but I can't even figure out how to access that interface.  The notoriety system SEEMS like it's broken now, or else I can't figure it out.  In previous games I'd just tear down some signs, and I'd know what it is I did that made my notoriety go up.  This seems like it goes up no matter what I do, and for reasons I don't understand, and it's much harder to get it down.

Heck, I don't even like how the treasure chests usually contain junk I don't care about now, and I'm not even sure i like the treasure chest mechanic that much to begin with (distracts from core gameplay).

On top of all that...maybe this is realistic, but Constantinople is visually boring and lo-fi looking compared to Italy in the previous two and Jerusalem and whatnot in the 2 before that.  It's just so BROWN and angular.  It's the first Assassin's Creed where standing on a tower synchronizing doesn't awe me, and that includes Bloodlines on the PSP!

It's tempting to blame the visuals on the crazy rush Ubisoft's doing to pump these out, but maybe it's really just that this particular city at this particular time DID look brown and angular.  It just ends up looking like if you ran Assassin's Creed 1 or 2 on less powerful hardware and had to massively  tone down the visuals, even if that's because it's being accurate lol

At any rate, this is the very first time with an Assassin's Creed game where I've passed from annoyance to like actually thinking there's a chance I won't finish this.

There neeeeeeds to be some trick to avoid or finish those Templar Den fights faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaast, because I am NOT dealing with winning the back every 3 minutes when I didn't enjoy winning them in the first place.

I beat Revelations recently and didn't do a single den defense past the initial tutorial. The trick is just to keep your notorierty from ever reaching the max. That's what triggers a den attack. Just head over to the nearest crier whenever your notoriety gets above half or so, or if you happen to run across an official, kill them.

Anyway, I enjoyed the game a lot.

I also just basically ignored all the bomb stuff and just played the game the same way I played Brotherhood, which worked fine.

You recruit new Assassins by helping them out in a dynamic event that appears on the map, the same as Brotherhood. To manage their missions and stuff you have to go inside a den that you own and interact with the desk.

Yup. I never had to re-take a tower or do that defense game past the tutorial. Just keep your notoriety low and they'll never get re-taken.

Now, if you want to complain about something take issue with those horrible first person Desmond segments. I did one, and just skipped the rest. Thank god they were all optional.

Yeah, those were pretty rough. I also didn't appreciate how Desmond looked completely different than his character model from AC2 and Brotherhood, and even Ezio's face didn't look like an older version of his model from Brotherhood as much as just a different guy.

So is it just me that the notoriety seems to be jumping up all the time for no reason?  Previously I'd know why it happened.  This one I'm just walking around and can practically watch it jumping up and up.  And then it's tougher to get it down.  It seems like I'd do nothing but search for ways to lower it.

Ugh, and now I've got two towers retaken, and it seems harder to get them a second time than the first :whistle2:/

It is tougher to lower it since there are no more wanted posters to tear down, you have to either bribe a crier or kill an official. FYI, you can use the same crier multiple times in a row, you just have to walk far enough away until the icon pops back up on your minimap, then you can turn around and use him again.

Notoriety goes up about 25% when you renovate a storefront, which if I remember correctly wasn't the case in Brotherhood. So that may be what's getting you. Aside from that, I think only crimes raise it.

Ooooh okay, it must be because I'm running around opening stores all over the place.  I'd be like "I could swear it's going up even when I'm just opening a store" lol

Geez, I do NOT like these new mechanics at all.  I guess I'll try to retake the 2 I've lost, then just remember to bribe those guys all the time and hope for the best.

I sure hope none of this carried over in to Liberation and III!

Thanks for your help!

Yeah I think they deliberately made notoriety easier to raise and harder to lower in order to steer you toward the den defense segments. But screw that!

AC3 just generally sucks and is no fun. In my opinion anyway. AC4 is pretty cool though.

Glad to hear 4's better!  And thanks again for your help!  It's going to help me enjoy the game more this weekend :)
