man, i haven't played any Atari games in forever. i might end up getting one or both of these (especially since E.T. isn't included). thanks for the heads up!

Wow, really? 50 games for Atari can't fit one Blu-Ray disc? Pretty sure they could fill up a 700 MB CD or at least a 4.7 GB DVD.

What the actual f---?!

LOL i'd be willing to bet they could fit every Atari game ever on a Genesis cart.

On a side note, i imagine it's a licensing issue, but it's too bad neither of these collections has the Atari Spider-Man game. It was actually a lot of fun.

The retro gamer/collector in me wants this, but the cheapassgamer in me tells me to wait til they go on sale.  If they had all been on one disc I definitely would have pulled the trigger and bought it at $20.  I really hope they do what they did with Intellivision Lives and include a soundtrack with the popular music of the time.  The music made the compilation bring me back to the 80s and experience the games like people would have when they were playing Intellivision.

I'm actually going to pick these up. Although I don't see why they couldn't be on just one disc.

Looking at the box art you would think centipede would be on vol. 1 and missile command on vol. 2, but no, missile command is on 1 and centipede on 2 according to the description. I wonder if amazon messed up.

I promise you'll regret buying these. About a year ago me and a friend hooked up his old 2600 and went through about a dozen games. They won't hold your attention for more than a minute. Believe me, any nostalgia you may be experiencing is way overhyped in your mind right now. There is no value here.

Cash grab or not, I love the idea. I know it's not doable due to licensing restrictions but it'd be fantastic to have the full library eventually.

Wonder how obnoxious the trophies will be.

Well, I guess the plus side is they aren't making these $5 a pop downloads. Still, and I say this as someone who would actually be the target audience for this, I'm really struggling to understand the need for two volumes of 50 titles at $20 each other than flat out greed. Especially hard to understand when I'm not seeing licensed titles or extras really but I'm seeing plenty of filler no one is going to play like Blackjack, 3D Tic Tac Toe and Math Grand Prix*.

* which I had back in the day. When you grow up with two teachers for parents, you tend to get presents like that.

I found this to be true with Rare Replay and the last time I hooked the N64 up.

Our younger minds magnified everything.

They could fit every Atari 2600 game ever made on a 700MB CD and have about 695MB left over.

There's no reason why this cant be a collection of 2600, 5200, 7800, Lynx, Jaguar, XE, and arcade games on 1 disc.

Are these all arcade games, home console games, or both? Based on these having online multiplayer, and leader boards, I'm assuming these will all be coin-op titles. For proper online play and leader-boards, these might be worth a buy.

I guess it will depend on how well everything is implemented and how well it all works. My only issue would be controls for most of these games, as almost every great Atari coin-op had some form of unique controller, so having at least a trackball would be key at the bare minimum to enjoy most of the games offered.

I don't have a next gen system yet, so my questions are moot I supposed, but I would be interested in this depending on what and how it is all offered.

If the games couldn't hold your attention, perhaps its because you're no longer accustomed to single screen arcade games? IMO games like Yars or Missile Command still hold up gameplay-wise just fine.

Also I think the fact that games of that era reward success with points rather than gameplay progression/narrative payoff is one reason people have trouble getting back into these games. Back in the day, you could compete with friends/brag/get patches for your high score. Playing missile command now, you're pretty much just playing against yourself unless you compete in an AtariAge league or something. The leaderboard feature is a good move with these compilations, it gives people a reason to play beyond pure nostalgia.

The number of complaints about how many games could go on the disc is silly. Just because they could doesn't mean they should. They are looking to make money, not offer the best value possible. At $0.40 a game it seems lIke a decent value. Relative to Nintendo's prices for old games or what Sega is charging for some Master System games on PSN this seems like good value

holy crap there's a ton of filler on those two discs. For every Missile Command (Arcade) there are 5 of shit like Blackjack, Checkers, or multiple different football games that all suck (or 3D Tic Tac "Tow"). And believe me, I bet not many people loved the Real Sports series on the 2600 back in the day more than I did, but those wouldn't even pass the nostalgia threshold these days. I can't imagine playing RS Football or RS Baseball for more than 30 seconds

its not silly, you have to switch discs now because of their stupid decision, they probably could've charged $30 for all these games on a single disc and still made more money than on those Flashback systems they sell for $40

Yeah, I don't know how much time and money they have had to spend to add current features to 30 year old games. I'm sure it wasn't cheap, and the amount per disc seems fair enough.

Fitting EVERYTHING on one disc is no doubt a valid question, but considering what digital games cost, DLC, and other non tangible items, I'm not going to complain about a physical set of this nature. But I won't stop those who care to either, as I can see the rational behind it.

nah, I grew during that era, I can admit that most of these games just haven't aged well

For me, Atari made some of the best coin-ops ever. But sadly, as I stated earlier, controls are key, and I can't see most of these games playing decent without there intended control methods. Maybe they will tweak and adjust the controls for modern controllers, but that still probably won' be ideal, but better than nothing. But I agree that most of these games are still very well made and enjoyable even today.

The only thing that bugs me about the split is having to swap back and forth, but if they manage some form of temporary activation to where I don't have to go back and forth constantly I'd be fine with it. Really I already have pretty much all these games on the Atari 2600 as well as the anthologies for PS2/Xbox/PC. I'm just really buying it for the online features and in the hope that they have some cool extras.

I'm curious to see if they implement any touch controls on the PS4 version. I kind of doubt it though :p.

Here's the list of games...

Volume 1:

Includes: Adventure, Asgo Concentration, Asteroids, Asteroids (Arcade), Asteroids Deluxe (Arcade), Basic Math Blackjack, Breakout, Casino, Championship Soccer, Checkers, Chess, Code Breaker, Crystal Castles, Crystal Castles (arcade), Demons to Diamonds, Double Dunk, Flag Capture, Golf, Gravitar, Gravitar (arcade), Hangman, Haunted House, Major Havoc (arcade), Maze craze, Missile Command, Missile Command (Arcade), Night Driver, Off the Wall, Outlaw, Race, Red Baron (arcade), Return to Haunted House, RS Baseball, RS Basketball, RS Tennis, Secret Quest, Sentinel, Sky Diver, Spacewar, Sprint (arcade), Starship, Stellar Track, Street Racer, Sub Commander, Super Breakout, Super Breakout (Arcade), Surround, V Pinball, and Video cube.

Volume 2:

Includes: 3D Tic Tac Tow, Air Sea Battle, Backgammon, Basketball, Black Widow (arcade), Bowling, Brain games, Canyon bomber, Centipede, Centipede (arcade), Circus Atari, Combat, Combat 2, Desert falcon, Dodge-em, Fatal run, Football, Homerun, Human cannonball, Liberator (arcade), Lunar lander (arcade), Millipede, Millipede (arcade), Minigolf, Pong (arcade), Quadrun, Radar lock, RS Volleyball, RS Boxing, RS Football, RS Soccer, Save Mary, Slot machine, Slot racers, Space duel (arcade), Sprint master, Star raiders, Steeplechase, Stunt cycle, Super baseball, Super football, Sword quest EW, Sword quest FW, Sword quest WW, Tempest, Tempest (arcade), Video Olympics, Warlords, Warlords (arcade), Yars' revenge

The highlights for me:

Volume 1: Adventure, Astroids (Arcade), Astroids Deluxe (Arcade), Breakout, Crystal Castles (Arcade), Missile Command (Arcade), Super Breakout (Arcade), V Pinball

Volume 2: Centipede (Arcade), Circus Atari, Combat, Combat 2, Lunar Lander (Arcade), Millipede (Arcade), Star Raiders, Tempest (Arcade), Warlords (Arcade), Yars' Revenge

Most of those are pretty excellent games and still worth playing.  Combat, Combat 2 & Warlords (Arcade), mainly because now there would be online which these games only were great (IMO) for multiplayer.  Especially 4 player Warlords... though it will be interesting without the paddle controllers and everyone sitting in the same room.

Worth $40 for the pair?  No.  But I could see buying these digital later during a sale.

And how about including all the cool stuff the hardware version does. Where is Adventure II?

yeah but i still didnt think buying was bad, still great value for the price, found out the hard way how much skill and patience i lost when i tried to play some of those again, still fun since some of those carts dont work in my 64 anymore, hope retro eventually makes their console up to 64 for some 007 fun

Will the PS4 version have all the games on the disk, or will only 1 be on it and I'll have to download the rest? :whistle2:

to all the whiners....yes it could be all on one disc...but supposedly the games are updated a little, plus they have to get these games to actually run on the newer systems which is easier said than done, licensing issues as well, and of course actually making the discs and cover art(pay for an artist or two) and making the cases. not to mention the retail stores need to be paid as well as the publisher on top of previously mentioned licensing fees.

so no you cannot literally copy and paste print this for 3 dollars and sell it.

its 20 dollars....its not a bad starting price.

Maybe if there wasn't so much filler on each disc I'd be able to accept $20 for the starting price.  Neat, but pass.  Besides, what's Super Breakout without a paddle controller?

With Prime savings and an extra $10 of Amazon credit on hand at the moment (Bing searches)... it was worth it, I pre-ordered both. Thanks OP! :)

I preordered these two volumes on amazon the night before this thread was created. I hope these are successful and they release more volumes down the road. From what I understand, I don't think it's that hard to get these to run on newer systems. I agree with all of your other points about licensing, cover art, etc. The ps4 is using regular x86 architecture. It's basically a PC. It's about as hard to get the games to run on a PS4 as it is to get them to run on a PC. The PS3 was a different story because they made up their own weird architecture that game developers had to adapt to.

Forget about putting all 100 on one disc - What they really should have done is trim out the filler noone cares about and release ONE compilation disc with the 50 or 60 games people would actually want to play.

What they should have done was include some of the excellent atari computer versions in the compliation. Pacman, Ms. Pacman, Donkey Kong, Donky Kong jr, Defender, Space Invaders and Galaxian were all outstanding conversions.
