B&N 1/2 off Criterion plus $5 coupon

FYI-bing.com also offers 12% cash back on B&N, for those that want to shop online. Best Buy Rewardzone shopping area offers 3 RZ per $1 spent at bn.com. However, lets say you spend $100 at Bn.com, you'd only get 300 pts, which is roughly 1 RZ cert for $5. But if you use bing.com you'd get $12.00 back via bing.
Do you still have to pay for a B&N membership? I'd like to pick up a cheap copy of The Seventh Seal BR.
Members get an extra 10%. For regular folks it will be 50% off. Too bad my membership ran out early this year.

Hi All, the coupons are for members only, and the membership is refundable within 30 days. With a couple of Criterions you broke even with membership, or you could just cancel it. The membership is $25/year I think. I have one, because we also buy books there, regularly but I don't know if the cost increased since then. B&N has gotten much more aggressive with music and dvd pricing, especially when they have sales online, so you'd just need to evaluate if you want to keep the membership permanently. Good Luck!

Thanks for the info DB. I might as well enlist since I get most of my books there anyway.

My store's selection wasn't that great by they did have The Third Man and said they'd hold it for me. That's super cool ~ I forgot they did that.

Cool... plan on picking up The 400 Blows on Blu; I hadn't seen it when the first 60% sale came around, and I didn't want to blind buy it.

Also plan on picking up some Kurosawa, Ozu, and Jarmusch discs I failed to grab last time.

Thanks op. Would the coupon work on the bluray version? I ask because it says dvd on the coupon. Hopefully amazon matches these sale.

Yes. Any B&N coupon that's valid toward DVDs is also valid toward Blu-Rays.

Amazon matched the sale last time, but they still ended up being much cheaper at B&N (provided you're a member).

Does anyone know if B&N accepts pre-orders?
Like I mentioned, I'm waiting for Che & Gomorrah to be released. If I order these on Tuesday and pay in full, are they still subject to the sale? Awesome is they were!

Pre-orders weren't subject to the sale last time, so they most likely won't be this time. However the sale ends at 3am on the day Gomorrah is released (Nov. 24), so you should be able to order it for the sale price online between midnight and 3am of that day (people did that last time with Repulsion).

I already have Repulsion, Kagemusha, and The Third Man (with a plastic case) reserved. I'm actually really surprised I found The Third Man after going to my BN last week looking for it and being told they didn't have it and they wouldn't be able order it because there were no copies in their warehouse.

Damn.....another sale that starts on a week I dont get paid. Seems to always work that way. I'm hoping they will still have some nice titles left the following week.

Doctor-any idea when Amazon matched the price last time? I know you said bn ended up being cheaper, but I am just curious. Thanks!

Last time they matched it 3 or 4 days after the B&N sale started, and they only dropped a select few titles to $19.99

I used the military.com link for 6% off and expedited shipping. I don't feel like signing up for the membership card and then cancelling.

I just placed my first order. Got the Hiroshi Teshigahara box set, The Bad Sleep Well, and the Yojimbo/Sanjuro set. I almost got Late Spring, too, but decided I'd think about it first. It seems pretty likely I'll wind up placing another order before this is over, anyway.

Total was something like $87. Pretty sweet.

If you guys insist on ordering online, you should just order an item at a time. That way you at least get 20% off on each item you purchase. You have to create a new B&N.com account every time you place a new order, but it only takes a minute and it's well-worth the money you'll save if you're not going to be buying stuff at the B&M stores.

I hope you like The Bad Sleep Well more than I did... I'm a huge fan of Kurosawa and a huge fan of Shakespeare, and I just barely made it through that movie.

Neither is The 400 Blows :(.... I was planning on picking that up in store with the $5 off coupon tomorrow. Hopefully they get added.

Also, do not bother with the OOP Pygmalion... the disc is the exact same as the cheaper "Essential Art House" version of the movie.

True, but if you're one anyway.................................. (my ellipsis is longer, the point is mine!) :)

I've seen The Bad Sleep Well (since the last time they had this sale, or else I'd've bought it then), so there's no fear that I won't like it. That's how all of this round of orders is for me--they're movies that I like a lot that I saw for the first time since the last sale. I bumped maybe ten Criterion movies to the top of my Netflix queue in hopes I can plow through a good number of them before the sale ends, too.

Yeah I liked The Bad Sleep Well myself. It's somewhat funny, and Mifune is great as usual. The last 1/3rd isn't as strong as the rest but still an enjoyable movie nonetheless. I've seen it probably 3 times now.

There's a few Kurosawa criterions I don't own yet so I'll be picking up some definitely. I was hoping to get Kagemusha on Blu-ray too, but that's not on sale.

Just returned from B&N and can confirm that ALL IN-STOCK TITLES ARE 50% OFF.

Picked up The Complete Monterey Pop for $26.50 and Howards End / The Third Man on Blu for $13 each. Heading back in a few hours for more :D

Picked up the Bergman trilogy for $32.96 shipped. Going to head down later today to get The Seventh Seal BR for $13. Going to try to resist buying more, but probably won't be successful.

Can you confirm that you can use the $5 off coupon multiple times???

I already confirmed it in the post you just quoted....

does anyone know if you can use another person's BN membership to get the discount in-store? does the BN card have a name or some ID of the owner printed on there? i'd trek to the store to use the $5 coupon if i knew i could with no hassles.

Aren't the Essential Art Films like "Rashomon" supposed to have a list price of $19.99? On Barnesandnobles.com it says the list price is $39.99, making it $19.99 with 50% off, the same price Borders normally has it for.

That's actually the regular edition I believe. They just have the wrong picture. They have a page for the Essen\tial Arthouse edition for $9.99: http://books.barnesandnoble.com/search/results.aspx?WRD=rashomon&box=rashomon&pos=-1&SZE=25

just snagged replusion on BR for 14.20 after tax. my store has quite a bit of stuff but unfortunately not the Nikkatsu Noir set. I'll have to go online for that. I may go back to the store and get Kagemusha and Monsoon Wedding BRs though.

Yes you can use someone else's membership card, they have their information in the computer but I've never had a problem using my sister's card (used it today to get Repulsion, The Third Man, and Kagemusha). You don't even need to take the card with you all you need to know is what name and phone number it's under.

How is this? The B&N I went to had 2 of these, and I've been eyeing them. How do they compare to American noir?

The employee was willing to sell me Criterions individually so that I could use the coupon multiple times... ended up getting these four (and I regret not getting more):

Silent Ozu - $16~
In the Mood for Love $13~
Stray Dog 13~
Samurai Rebellion $8~

Any opinions on Stray Dog? I only picked it up because the B&N near me didn't have it, so I was hedging my bets on getting it just in case, and will return it if I end up not wanting it.

Wages of Fear is the only movie I was after, my nearest B&N sold it before I got there.

You guys have any recommendations? I'm into all movies except comedies and I could do without the Samurai action movies.
You guys have any recommendations? I'm into all movies except comedies and I could do without the Samurai action movies.
Let me be the first to say Chungking Express... it's the absolute best modern romance movie I have ever seen, and believe me, you do not need to be a fan of romantic movies to like it.

Also, who doesn't like comedies? Weird...

On the same lines of CKE, I also think In the Mood for Love is absolutely fantastic... it's a period piece set in 1960s Hong Kong involving two neighbors whose significant others are having affairs.

Others that I feel confident blanketly recommending (and are not comedy or samurai associated):
- For All Mankind
- The Third Man
- The 400 Blows
- Brazil
- Bicycle Thieves
- Videodrome (though this tips far, far into the surreal side of things)
- Ikiru
- Down by Law/Night on Earth (if you enjoy Jarmusch... they can border on comedic, though)

I give a +1 recommendation to For All Mankind and The Third Man as listed above. Although I liked 400 Blows I don't see myself watching it more than once or twice. Great film though.
