Be wary ordering PS2 online pack from Circuit City!

CAGiversary!
Hey,

just wanted to give everyone the heads up if you are tempted by any special deals that show up that lower the price of ordering a ps2 from CC.
I ordered last week when they were offering a dvd remote with the package they claimed was the 97014/scph-50001 model, but to my dismay I didn't discover UNTIL I opened the box that they sent me the 97014/scph-39001 model as we all know if you're buying a new PS2 you shouldn't settle for anything less than the 50001 with it's built in IR, DVD+/- R/RW reading and reduced weight and fan noise. However, I've lost any value from the online pack saving as I have to shell over $22 bucks for restocking (an item the customer rep guy claims doesn't exist in their records anymore) and fork over shipping expenses because I live in a state without Circuit Cities!!! No real deals here, just a warning that CC might be trying to pawn off their discontinued online pack models to you. Be sure you read the model number on the outside of the box! I could settle and keep this newer model (as my old one has crapped out), but considering they sent me the remote for the 50001, it'd be useless otherwise. DAMN YOU CC!!!

If they claimed they were sending you the 50001 and did not, then they should take it back WITHOUT charging a restocking fee. It's their mistake, and you shouldn't have to pay for their false advertising. I bet you could get out of paying that if you mostly make a nuisance of yourself, call your credit card company and tell them to withhold payment until you get what you were supposed to get. Be agressive and they will probably exchange it without any charges.

Yeah, make sure that it says explicitly on both your receipt and the place where you ordered from online that it was model 50001. Looking at their online description of the PS2, it says nowhere that it's model 50001 - the only model number listed is SON 97014, which is only used internally at CC stores and does not necessarily mean the 50001 model. So it seems like your complaint is invalid here.

personally, i would complain to cc and call up my credit card company and get the charge held. if you really were suppose to get the newer model, and not an older version, then it is their fault and you should not have to pay a restocking fee.

i once brought back a broken scanner to cc to get a replacement, and they tried to charge me a restocking fee. they will try to charge one no matter what, but just argue with them and they will usually drop it.

The 97014 does mean the 50001 NA combo pack. Its labeled on the PS2 box itself. I went to two B&M CCs in order to get the bundle pack with the remote, but they only had the 97013 combo pack aka the 39001 model. I'm not even sure if CC caries the 97014, because none of the two houston ones had them and it seems alot of people are complaining about getting the older model. I ended up just getting mine at another place since I wanted the newer model.

To the thread starter, if you really dont want to spend the money on the restocking fees, then Id suggest you try exchanging your remote with the other remote at walmart.

Did the order page or receipt actually specify a different model (for either console or pack) different than what you received? that's all there is to it. If it did, you're entitled to every cent back, including shipping. If it didn't, you're not.

Hi, thanks for the input everyone. I don't know what to do as I think Circuit City's got me. When I ordered the system, the webpage was a different description, it specifically listed 50001 features like IR, and recordable dvd reading capabilities (can anyone else who ordered this from them verify I wasn't hallucinating?). The odd thing though is now their listing for the 97014 lists features of the older model PS2 (i-link port, no IR). The only evidence I have on my side is the model number on the outside of my box is 97013 and the fact they sent me the new model dvd remote. any advice?
Also, to counter CC's current listing, I found the best Buy listing:

Sony PlayStation 2 Online Pack with ATV Offroad Fury 2

Model: 97014

The PlayStation 2 Online Pack contains everything you need to get started in the online gaming world, as well as ATV Offroad Fury 2. With PlayStation 2 hardware and a network adapter (Ethernet/Modem) packed right into this new Online Pack, you can get connected and play, challenge or chat whenever you want. Enhanced functions also include Progressive Scan DVD Playback and a built-in I/R Receiver.

Believe me, I would have just gone over to Best Buy and picked up the darn thing but (as I just checked they have put up in their listing again) Circuit City was offering the DVD remote free along with free shipping. The thing I can really fault myself for is unsealing the package before I looked at the model number outside the box.

Well, update here, I called customer service and they told me that the person who I spoke with earlier was telling me wrong, so I shouldn't be charged a restocking fee. The shipping charges I can understand as they list it in the online policies though, so I guess I'm going to have to eat it. (looks like that "free" dvd remote isn't so free anymore)

OMG!!!! I can't believe how banal Circuit city is, finally 5 days after they received my return, I get a call from the corporate office stating that "returns called us and said that the 97013 model is just an alternate number and they can either return me the model I sent them or issue me a refund" ARGGHHHHH! I just want my new PS2!!! Yes, yes I know I could just ask for the refund, but I have a hunch they will be asking for the "free DVD remote" back if I asked for one. I want justice, this wouldn't be such a problem if there was a friggin Circuit City in Iowa and I could just haul it back in and physically point to the 97014 box and show them the differences they claim do not exist. I'd still be wary about buying the online pack from circuitcity.com and if possible make em let you pick it up in store so you can guarantee you are getting the new model. These jerks are getting a stern earful from me tomorrow morning when they are open again! I'm going to read to them the reviews from their webpage that state people got a 97014 (with IR built in and dvd rw readablity) and also let them have it with the Best buy webpage that also states the features of the 97014. ARRGGHHH!!! Plus I'm going to demand that they send it to me overnight for all the time and grief expended on this.
