As someone who plays XBLA game way more than retail release, the 360 D-Pad pisses me off to no end. I remember reading (a year or so ago) about one of the Japanese 3rd party pads having a really good D-Pad. Any idea as to what pad it was?

That said what game needs a dpad that badly that wouldn't be better with an arcade stick?

Another thing is that 360 pads have alot of variation in quality on the dpads. At least this was the case initially with the gray shiny gray edged controllers. Every newer oem 360 pad (matte gray edged) has had a lousy d-pad.[/QUOTE]

Well, I'm trying to get a 3rd game pad that'll have a better D-Pad, but I can also use for regular games for those rare times I have more than one other friend over.

I've heard people say the arcade stick is a bad substitute for the D-Pad because it is analog.
I have yet to try one myself but I would want to try one out first before buying.

There are videos on Youtube showing you what to sand down on the d-pad to make it work really well. Try sanding it first.

I have the now out of production Hori Pad and the D-Pad is exceptional on it. However, the face buttons are too loose IMO and the shoulders/triggers are clearly inferior to the 1st party pad. Still, I'd say its your best bet for XBLA games.

yea, the hori controller's d-pad has good reviews from people i know. i recently ordered one 2 days ago just so i can play the puzzle games without frusatration

I have yet to find a Hori product in a retail store anywhere. What is the deal with this company..no distribution or no products?

It would be awesome if Hori would make a controller like the one the made for the gamecube. Basically if they made an xbox360 verison of the classic controller with a good dpad I'd be in for 2.

they are HUGE in Asia but they don't have a lot of presence in the States and most of the stuff they make is made in limited quantities. the 360 controller mentioned here was only available from Walmart but it's now out of print so they no longer sell it.

you can find Hori stuff easily in online import stores and ebay.

I sanded down the inside edges of the d-pad on one of my controllers and it's noticeably better. It's about as good as the one on my Pelican controller. Are the Hori pads really out of production now? I think I've only ever seen one once for sale used in a Gamestop.

Has anyone from MS ever made any kind of statement on what the hell the deal is with their D-Pad and what they are going to do about it? Don't interviewers ask questions like this...anyone? I can't believe they would allow a situation where people have to disassemble their controller and modify it just to get something somewhat passable. Sigh.

I think MS should be hounded about this issue.

They wouldn't make a statement about that. Same way Sony won't admit the SUXAXIS triggers should be concave, the analogs should have dimples instead of domes, the PSP d-pad needs a shim, rumble isn't important, etc. etc.

Microsoft just ignore this kind of stuff. Trust me. If you e-mail them, they'll tell you to call their shitty hotline. Then the bozo who answers the phone will completely not listen to what you say and offer you a replacement controller. I swear, those people are idiots. You tell them a product is a piece of shit by design and they offer you an identically flawed replacement.

Ok, I have no scientific evidence to back this up. But I suspect that the D-Pad responsiveness... or lack thereof, is due to the controller being wireless.

Why?

I have a Official Microsoft 360 for PC wired controller (usb) and have had no problems when playing on either the PC or when hooked up to a 360. I've tried the wireless on the 360 and I can't even navigate through menus, unless I MASH the d-pad.

Um... no. Sometimes the pad actually clashes with the round piece of plastic around it. When that happens, you sometimes don't get the direction to go down all the way unless you do mash it. You can even hear it hitting. That's why it's horrible. Sanding down the area around the pad fixes it.

yeah that makes sense. I understand that.

but i'm perplexed, how come I don't have to mash my wired controller? :whistle2:k

it's also official microsoft brand.

Maybe the wired ones are made slightly differently.

I think one of the problems is also that when you are pushing up or down, it is way too easy to trigger left or right by the slightest amount of rocking to the side.

actually i remember the dpad on the wired controllers being better too. i originally had a core when 360s were hard to come by and i remember i never had issues with the dpad. ill have to pull out my wired one again and see
