"... it generally works better to, say, offer fewer sales rather than discouraging individual customers who shop aggressively on price. "

The last few paragraphs deal with CAGs, FWs, and the like. Personally, I wouldn't shop at BB,CC, or practically any B&M media/electronics chain store if they didn't have deals worth shopping there.

This article is BS. Like we're supposed to feel sorry for Best Buy cause we try to save money. I deliver newspapers to Best Buy's corporate headquarters every morning and I walk past one hallway where they have 6 flat panel plasma TVs setup just to show their "history". Completely unnecessary waste of money, not to mention the size of Dick Schulze's office (it overlooks the are with the tvs).

Here's Best Buy throwing a fit when they have been gradually raising their prices (some DVDs and DVD sets have changed price from $22 to $30) and they don't expect that customers are going to try to save money. They're right we should spend more so they can build another corporate headquarters on land which the city of Richfield, MN stole from other businesses and homeowners so BB could build (the city was ordered to pay those who were kicked out so its not like I am just making wild accusations) . I am getting really tired of this company and this is just another reason why. Well that and the fact that I shouldn't be posting when I get home from work and haven't had any sleep!

What's sad is that article is ancient. I had to check the date and was surprised to see the 7-5 date on it. I distinctly remember all of the examples they produced from an article about two years ago. Strange.

On topic, that is pretty interesting. It's like they are writing an article about us!

So everyone that goes into a store is required to buy something at full price? Demon shoppers are people that take advantage of sales? Get real.

What about people that go for comparison shopping? You're about to plunk down $5k on a plasma flatscreen, but you want to get info first. Do you try to avoid the salesperson that will inevitably come ask if you need help just so that you won't cost BestBuy money by tying up their workers? What world is this analyst living in?

I saw this on Headline News while on the treadmill this morning. I am pleased someone posted it.

And I like how they link these items:
"Like a customer who ties up a salesworker but never buys anything, or who buys only during big sales. Or one who files for a rebate, then returns the item"
I'm cheap, but that rebate thing is fraud and wrong. I wouldn't do it--that's one step away from outright stealing. Most people, I believe, even cheapasses,if they got excellent help and service from a salesworker, might pay a little extra and buy the product from that store.
Buying only during big sales? Well, waah. Isn't that the concept of loss leaders? I do agree, if only sale stuff gets sold, there will probably be fewer big sales, but that's the market. They put a product out at a certain price, and we decide the price we're willing to pay for it.
If they're losing money on sale stuff, they're pricing it too low. I would think that selling one item for 25% off it better than not selling it at all.

How can you return something you got a rebate for unless the clerk is a dumbass and completely fails to notice that the UPC code is missing from the item you are returning? Don't they have to scan that to do the return?

First off, to the grammer police: Fu, Fu , Fu, fuck the police, fuck the police.

Second, i did not see the other post, and hell, im still not awake.

I think they are upset with people trying to screw the system. It mentions people doing mail in rebates only to return items. I think they are also mentioning towards those that buy in bulk on sale items to make their own gain.

If they want something done, they need to limit the number of items a person can buy and make sure a person can't return an item they are getting a rebate for. It makes the most since to stop the things that are causing them damages instead of cutting all deals.

i personally don't feel attacked by the article because I buy during sale times and nonsale times.

"...they're smart, and they're costing us money" SO the real problem here is that they have "Dick Envy" when it comes to our shopping intelligence. Come on, CEOs, trying to outwit us punk-ass teenagers/college students is part of the fun!

I can kinda sympathize with the tying up the worker and never buying anything ideal. I remember this one damned kid who came into gamestop and rattled off questions for half an hour before saying "Thanks, but I don't ever buy videogames". OH YOU fuck.

Yes, that's true too, but the comment about people who tie up employees asking questions and then buy anything piss me off. As an employee, your there to help customers, wether they buy stuff or not. By simply being kind an curtious and knowledable, you probably made "friends" with that customer and when they do decide to purchase said item, they'll come back.

I understand and rationalize everything he said, but you dont put that out publically. Ever. Those words are meant for board rooms and rich people discussions.

Now, thats just someone being an asshat. Im pretty sure he means regular, inqusitive people who arnt looking to buy at that moment, but are shpping around for options.

I just noticed the part about tying up a salesperson and not buying anything. If you really think about it, and especially if you have worked there, then you'll realize that they aren't just talking about not buying anything but they are talking about not buying anything that is profitable for them.

A good example is when I bought my laptop there. I picked it out and basically just had an employee get it down and ring it up for me. For some reason 4 different employees told me that I HAVE to buy service and accessories with it, with the reason being that they make little profit on the laptop itself but they make a lot more on the overpriced cables and other junk to go with it, security even said something when they checked my reciept on the way out.

The funniest part about it was the girl that initally "helped" me with my purchase was even blatantly flirting with me until I decided not to buy any accessories or a service plan at which point she promptly stopped. It was like she was whoring herself out for her Best Buy pimp!

I love the flirting part, I roll with it, then say no! Its the best.

There are some pain in the ass people who are really a plague on retail in that they have no lives and treat clerks as a captive audience to provide them some semblence of a social life. At the same time that clerk has a list of things that are supposed to get done in addition to helping those actually looking to make a purchase, any purchase, find the product.

Part of the failure in the article is that the guy refers to anyone who walks in the door as a 'customer' and so the bad ones are bad customers. When it comes to claiming rebates for returned merchandise lets get real and call a scammer a scammer.

Like a customer who ties up a salesworker but never buys anything, or who buys only during big sales.

Well here's my two cents, why have the sales in the first place if they are costing more money to the company and aren't the sales supposed to happen to lure customers in so that they will either buy other stuff or clear the stuff they have too much inventory on?

hmm...maybe the bouncer idea isnt such a bad one. they could stand Big Nick outside the front entrance of BB and when someone tries to enter...

"Excuse me sir, but if you dont plan on buying a 3 year service plan and a $45 printer cable with that laptop, we're going to have to ask you to take your cheapass to walmart. We don't serve your kind here."

The sad thing about this is that they mention two differnent groups as the same in this article. They are lumping the bargain shopper that gets good deals by shopping "smart" with the customer that is ripping them off by somehow getting rebates and then returning things.

I still do not understand how you can do this since you have to mail in the UPC. Apparently someone is copying the UPC and the corporate Rebate people are too stupid to figure this out???? :?:

This is comedy Millionares even billionares complaining about the lower economically fit people trying to save a few dollars. Man if I had 1/30 the money they make I wouldnt have to be a cheap ass shopper

I'd like my own personal bodyguard to take with me when I go shopping at Best Buy to fend off their overaggressive sales employees. I'd tired of being harassed to buy things I don't want or need...and when someone asks you if you want to buy a 3 year service plan for a video game purchase (not a console, just a damn game) you would get annoyed too. Or employees that insist that you buy a new dvd player to go with every dvd purchase. Ugggh.

LMAO the local Best Buy hates me. I'm always checking the open stock items for stuff. My last open stock item I scored was a huge $3000 samsung big screen TV that I got for $800...it was the floor model that some stupid ass employee lost the remote to. Then they tried to sell me a replacement remote for $200 and a service plan too. No way. When I got the big TV home, i used my the old remote from my 13inch samsung TV. It worked perfectly. I've been labeled a "demon customer" ever since.

I seem to be one of the few people who have yet to have any problems with Best Buy. I occasionaly deal with stupid employees, but that seems to happen at every store I go to. I'm also probably one of the few who buy things there on a regular basis. I don't mind paying a little more to find everything I want in one place. Just this weekend I spent close to $500 there, nothing was on sale, and I used a $5 coupon, but that was it. I use CAG to try and save a few bucks on games I was planning on buying in the first place, not buying all kinds of games I have no intention of playing just because they're cheap. All I'm trying to say is if you don't like their attitudes, don't give them your patronage and avoid shopping there altogether.

It's funny. I've been really close to having a shirt printed up with "No Add-ons" on it, so I could just shake my head and point to the shirt when they start their spiel.
Is your TV parked in the center of a large pentagram drawn in blood? You have to properly consecrate it, you know.
No, but it already has had its ritual blood sacrifice requirements fulfilled. It squished my husband's foot when he was taking it out of the moving truck. Yes, the TV survived the incident unharmed. :D

lol it was funny when trying to buy a computer their last year, it was a emachine. I ddient have too much money iwanted to noly spend around 400$. The best buy employee came up to me and said "ohhh you wanna get that computer, Im like is that the cheapess one, he is like yes, but were all out" Im like damn, so then I ask customer service to see when they will get more emachines in and there like we have 7 of them in stock. Im like WTF, the guy said no ur all out. I went back to the computers again and told that guy what customer service said "well sorry bout that, I just wouldent be able to sleep at night if I sold you a emaichine without our service plan, It was for your best interest, here lets just go ahead and get you a service plan and a few accossries such as blank cd's and a printer cable" im like "no thank you" he said "jeez i dont think i will be able to live with myself selling it to you unprotected, cause the parts been reported breaking in a couple of months" i said "uim like noooooo i dont want the extra crap jsut the computer, so jsut grab the compuiter and take it to the register for me" then i smiled, he looked pissed taht i dident buy the extra shyt. anyhow worst exsperience i had in a while

shaq-fu him with out us good bad or even demon customers they would be no best buy. oh, it's our fault that people have to do they jobs and stand with a person for 20 mins. and we are responsible for their low prices which come from the fact that they sell so much that they can offer it at a lower price. for example around my house their was a CC & BB across the street from each other CC closed down about 2 months ago due to lack of profit. that's not BB demon fault for selling so much.

I can't believe that there are people who want us to give pity to the 'pure-souled, big-timing corporate electronic stores.' I really hope that this CC deal has pissed them off to a point where they are about to throw their pocket protectors at their personal secretaries.
http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=21712
Why did you post that link?

My favorite are the employees that act like they know what they are talking about. I went and bought a wireless router and the guy kept saying that the one I had was the worst rated and that I had to get a service plan. I explained to him the meaning of "no". Then he tried to get me to buy Cat5E cables. It's a damn wireless router, how stupid is he. I nicely explained that it was wireless and if I needed them I made my own since I have built networks for businesses. To that he replied that my cables wouldn't be as good as the store ones. I walked away laughing, it's all I could do.
Hmm...does anyone see the potential sales of "Proud to be a Demon Customer" T-Shirts from CAG? :)
Yeah, that's bound to get you so much cooperation from the salesppl...

BTW, I think this thread should be split into two: "best buy" and "more of the ass".

Cooperation? I just need the damn salespeople to get out of my way when I go to pay for something at the register. What part of "no" do they not understand?

And as for that corporate memo reguarding the customers tying up salespeople's valuable time...hello, that is the salesperson's job! To deal with a customer. If there are so many customers tying up all the saleperson's time and they are always busy that it is actually starting to hurt the store's sales, that would be a hint: HIRE MORE SALEPEOPLE TO WORK THE FLOOR. Duh. But of course Best Buy isnt going to do that...minimal staff on the floor means less paychecks to give out.

Funny how some areas of the Best Buy store are overstaffed and understaffed. I now avoid the computer and tv areas like the plague at my local best buy...they're all overstaffed. Good luck trying to find an employee if you want to buy a washer or dryer or vacuum cleaner.

Best Buy created its own problems when it tried to sell everything at a bargain bin rate. You list everything in the store for a cheap sale, and then complain when cheap people show up to buy just that? Give me a break...face it Best Buy, your store is not the place for the upscale customer that you want.

That tshirt needs to say "proud to be a no add on Demon Customer."

personaly I hate it when dumbasses tie up salespeople asking dumb questions about things, and for some reason these people are almost always fat, even if they do buy something it's annoying. They should have IQ tests to let people in.
Dumbasses are ruining this country
That's to you Mr. Bush
