I'm in the market for a NES console and was thinking of going the clone route. Man do I regret selling my toploader! Anyways there's quite a few different ones out there and I have no idea which to buy. Any feedback is appreciated.

Also, I know this isn't the trading forum but if anyone has one available please check my trade list.

thanks,

RC

I hope you had good reason for selling the toploader lol. Me personally, I'd probably go for one of those that has the wireless controllers for it. Its been discussed here before but I can't remember the name of it off the top of my head.

Yeah I was a major dumbass for selling the toploader. Granted I got some good money for it but still a dumbass.

I've searched here but it looks like a couple of different models have popped up on ebay since those posts were made. The one you speak of sounds like it had some minor compatibility problems.

And of course since this is CheapAssGamer, I'll throw another suggestion your way in the Neo Fami. It will work with any NES controllers you already have and comes with a pair of its own that looks somewhat similar to the Generation NEX controllers. All this for around half the price, at most.

Edit: While looking for a compatibility list for the Neo Fami, I came across this article. Obviously one review isn't the end-all be-all of the Generation NEX, but I figured if you were considering buying one it'd be good to hear multiple viewpoints. http://www.vintagecomputing.com/index.php/archives/6

I've had good luck with my Yobo Full Review here But you'd probably need to find one on egay, at flea market, or a crazy Chinatown variety store, the company that makes them doesn't deal directly with individuals.

The Messiah looks nice but I'm not sure about the price. I'd like to be able to use some original NES accessories if possible. Also, do any of these work with the JP versions of NES, famicom I think. I'm probably not going to get involved in that but the option is nice.

It's been awhile since I've dealt with the NES but I'm looking forward to building up a decent collection since it's fun and cheap. I won't cry if my 4 year old sticks pennies in the thing. He's not allowed anywhere near my 360 :) .

thanks,

RC

Yeah, I totally agree the price for the NEX is way high, but having rebuilt 2 original NES' and still getting the blinking screens, it was purchase out of sheer frusteration. But I have no regrets at all! And I use my original NES MAX controllers and Zapper. I can't find my R.O.B. though, so I don't know if that works. Yes it plays the Original Famicom games too. There are two slots, one for the NTSC games and one for the JP games released in Japan.

Some places that sell the Neo-Fami package it with a converter, although if you have some older NES games (Gyromite and Pinball come to mind) you may be able to cannibalize those for the Famicom->NES converter.
What about for the genesis? My genesis doesn't work and I'd love to play the old school games.
I don't think the Patent for Genesis has expired yet in the US. Once it does, I'm sure we'll see tons of clones. If you want an original, check some of the tradelists in CAG.

Also, don't forget the Wii is supposed to offer the older games from the NES, SNES, Genesis days downloadable. It's just a question of which games. Might be worth saving the $60 you were going to use on a NEX and putting it towards a Wii.

God, I remember when the NES toploaders were on clearance at KayBee toys for $20.00 each a long time ago. I had no idea then, but I remember thinking they were cheap and I wanted one. I wish I had bought out the stock with my allowance or something.

I ended up paying for one off of ebay a few years ago, but it was one of the best purchases I've made.

estarland sells a nice nes clone for about $30. I have had mine for over a year and it still works great. I have had no issues w/ any games that I have played on it.

You could just modify your xbox and run an NES emulator on there. I believe they sell an NES controller to USB converter. With that, it would be just like playing a real NES.

You could also pick up a dreamcast and do the same.

I'd say go after a top loader again if your thinking about the NEX. I got to try one out about a month ago and thought the controllers sucked pretty bad. The "joystick" was very awkward, just a warning before you invest in some wireless ones.
