So, I consider myself somewhat of a cupcake aficionado. I live in NYC and so I've tried all the big hyped up "classics" like Magnolia, Crumbs, Billy's Bakery and (my one-time favorite) Sugar Sweet Sunshine. Recently however, I had the pleasure of trying a totally indie place which kind of blew me away.

It's called Kumquat Cupcakery. Cute name, I'll give it that. The girl who runs it (also totally cute) sets up pretty regularly at a flea market in Brooklyn. They subscribe to the notion that good things come in small packages... mini-cupcakes! Which I kind of think is wicked cute. Anyway, the point is, even with all that cute stuff going for it, I'm kind of a hard-sell on taste and texture. I've found the cake at Magnolia to (often) be too dry... even when I catch them fresh. The frosting at Sugar Sweet Sunshine can occasionally just be too sweet (crazy I know). And Crumbs, while delicious, can often go crazy with toppings and varieties. Kumquat's totally struck a perfect balance though. Great cake, great frosting, and variety without convolution. Simple, delicious... it just took the good parts of every other cupcake I've had and put them in one (well, maybe two) bites.

So, what's the reason I missed this place previously if I'm such a hot shot? There's no B&M location! They exclusively cater/deliver cupcakes... and of course, set up at the flea market. Anyway, I'm totally buying some for Valentine's Day. Is it lame to send yourself a Valentine's Day gift? Hopefully, the owner delivers them herself...

If you're anything like me (or live in nyc, for that matter), do yourself a favor and fawn over these cupcakes...

:whistle2:k...they do look quite tasty...might be a good idea for me to order some for the wife for Valentines...too bad you can't choose what flavors you want though :whistle2:(

Best cupcakes I've had were from Cake Love in Silver Spring, MD. Super huge cup cakes. Love the chocolate ones with peanut butter icing.

When i saw the the 2nd picture my first thought was damn she looks like an asian guy when cupcakes aren't in front of her face. Then i scrolled.

I was in NY for the first time in December.. went to magnolia, not impressed. Then we went to the holiday fair in central park and she was there with her mini cupcakes and I passed on it... what a mistake.

And whats up with the cupcake craze recently? Theres 2 shops around here and they charge $3 a cupcake like they are some rare delicacy. I guess people pay for them regularly and theres a huge profit margin. meh.

Theres this great place in Burbank, Ca called Cupcakes and Co near the mall there. Huge cupcakes with loads of frosting. I don't even like frosting, but these cupcakes have me eating the stuff. Great stuff.

And that chick is CUTE!

I'd like to volunteer to be the official judge of this here competition. Just pay for my airfare, and I'll travel the nation sampling the delicious cupcake treats.

Prime, I have gone there a few times... really good... they have the mix you can get at williams and sonoma which is great and hard to screw up.

And I didnt realize you where so close to where I live... :whistle2:O

lmao i though the same thing too. Too bad they're only available for NY I would like to try some.
As long as they have carrot cake, they can't go wrong. And I'd eat cream cheese frosting off of her booty all day.
carrot cake with cream cheese is awesome so is yellow cake with cream cheese frosting. i dunno why but chocolate frosting always tastes ful of chemicals to me.

a post for cupcakes?! LOL. they're overrated IMO, especially the trendy $3 a piece ones. I like mine home made and even better are muffins or bread. Zucchinni bread, blueberry muffins, banana nut bread, etc., all have more flavor than cupcakes only flavor of extra sugar. I've eaten at Sprinkles in LA and it's horrible, pure sugar, no flavor! I'll take my wife's home made breads, cakes and muffins any day. the only thing muffins are good for are weddings, we did cupcakes in place of slices of cake and everyone loved it.

you know what would be the shit? going to Voodoo Doughnuts in Portland, Oregon! gimme some maple bar with maple bacon!

Tell her to get back into the kitchen?

Did you see the episode of No Reservations where Tony went there and couldn't stop eating the bacon donuts? I just don't see the appeal myself.

A cupcake shop just opened up around the corner from my apartment called SWEET! By good golly Miss Holly. I had no idea there was an entire market for just cupcakes. I'm dyin' for a carrot cake one, though. But things like that I say I'll visit and never do.

I found the website last night. Surprisingly they didn't have many pictures. That looks fucking good, I'm going to have to make a trip down to Santa Monica pretty soon. Thanks.

fuck yeah. I was in Portland in November, and the LOOKS on people's faces (about 50 of us from around the country, and maybe 5-6 Portlanders) when they saw those.

"B-B-B-B-BACON!?!?!? ON DOUGHNUTS!?!?!?!??!"

fuck yeah, bacon on doughnuts.

I love these City Trends that come out......from the "anywhere else but that place" they are such laughable trends but when you live there, its SOOO important. :p I mean, you can set up a hot dog cart and make a mint if you staff it with girls in bikini's.

Someone makes a store where they ONLY make frenchfries, suddenly "FrenchFry" stores become the rage. Muffin stores....now cupcake stores. fucking Cupcakes. Exactly agree with the poster above, like they are some kind of highbrow treat :D

I'm waiting for BAKLAVAWORLD!

Only in a city, where "wandering around the streets" is a national pasttime could you have stores that only make cupcakes, or stores that only sell rolls, or stores that only sell one kind of bread.....in the real world we have bakeries, where they sell ALL that stuff!

"Oh but you've never had THESE kinds of cupcakes!".....uhhhh huuuuhhhh.

I live more in a "tiny town" than a "city," but we have an awesome hot dog shop where all the menu items are named after burlesque dancers and classic strippers. fucking rules.

Its this general distain for the stupidity of City-Dwellers that I harbor which makes stores like this so intolerable to me..........I mean, I like a cupcake as much as the next guy, but what if I want an APPLE FRITTER...??....I'm fuckED. Then I'll have to walk to "Fritter Land"...no, sorry it would be called "FRITTER ME THIS" or "THE FRITTER STATION" or some other nauseating play on words that would have me hoping the owner would trip into his deep fryer just once...... :p

Granted, I'm the first person to ridicule the purchse of Sheet Cakes from the local grocery store, but you know...I'm old fashioned. Stores that sell only 1 thing disturb me. Well...shoe stores, those are ok. Alright I'm done.

:D

So, if all of those stores also sold shoes, they would be instantly legitimized?

I always passed by that place but never actually went in. I might have to check it out sometime.

o_O... what's the big fucking deal? It's a cupcake. Has society gone so utterly fucking insane that we now have legitimate CUPCAKE groupies?
