So, I consider myself somewhat of a cupcake aficionado. I live in NYC and so I've tried all the big hyped up "classics" like Magnolia, Crumbs, Billy's Bakery and (my one-time favorite) Sugar Sweet Sunshine. Recently however, I had the pleasure of trying a totally indie place which kind of blew me away.
It's called Kumquat Cupcakery. Cute name, I'll give it that. The girl who runs it (also totally cute) sets up pretty regularly at a flea market in Brooklyn. They subscribe to the notion that good things come in small packages... mini-cupcakes! Which I kind of think is wicked cute. Anyway, the point is, even with all that cute stuff going for it, I'm kind of a hard-sell on taste and texture. I've found the cake at Magnolia to (often) be too dry... even when I catch them fresh. The frosting at Sugar Sweet Sunshine can occasionally just be too sweet (crazy I know). And Crumbs, while delicious, can often go crazy with toppings and varieties. Kumquat's totally struck a perfect balance though. Great cake, great frosting, and variety without convolution. Simple, delicious... it just took the good parts of every other cupcake I've had and put them in one (well, maybe two) bites.
So, what's the reason I missed this place previously if I'm such a hot shot? There's no B&M location! They exclusively cater/deliver cupcakes... and of course, set up at the flea market. Anyway, I'm totally buying some for Valentine's Day. Is it lame to send yourself a Valentine's Day gift? Hopefully, the owner delivers them herself...
If you're anything like me (or live in nyc, for that matter), do yourself a favor and fawn over these cupcakes...
