Best LCD for Gaming using S-Video?

kodec

CAGiversary!
Anybody have a recommendation for an LCD flat panel that looks good with S-Video connection?

The ones I've seen in the past all look soft and muddy when played on a LCD.

I personally don't like LCDs but one of the important factors to look at is the response time, Looks like resonable priced good LCDS will be 8ms nowadays and moving lower. The lower the number the better but of course this cann't be you only determineing factor, some monitors with say a 12ms actually have been known to be better than 6ms because of how companies can measure the response ie 2 variations That I recall are
1) black to black pixel color cycle
and
2)gray to gray pixel color cycle

from what I have seen, your best thing is to read alot of users opinions and see for yourself as much as possible. I have seen a couple of LCD units that on paper are perfect and then in person I see "ghosting", and a kinda foggy look. That was 2 years ago and I gave up until I see the usual defaults for LCD's become 6 ms for around 150 or less and be really good known brands. I have even seen where Benq makes models that have built-in "overclocking" settings for fast visual intensive needs.

I think the reason you say S-Video looks soft and muddy is because of the scaling and processing LCDs have to do to fit the signal into its native resolution. If you're looking for something to use with an standard definition signal, get an LCD with a standard definition native resolution. I would recommend just suffering through it on a high definition set, but to each his own.

I personlally wouldn't recrommend LCD because of burn in. I don't know what your price range is, but if its pretty high, look into DLP. No screen door effect and no burn in like with everything else. Not to mention they're light as hell compared to their tube and projection counter parts

I use a Sony SDM-V72 17" LCD monitor for gaming, and work. It's resolution is a bit low (1280X720) but it doubles as a HD monitor. I work on it (programmer) all day, and use it for gaming and DVD's at night. It's a fantastic monitor. I've never noticed any ghosting at all. It accepts composite, component, and S-Video inputs. I got it for $500 from Frys.
