Best way to buy classics?

I'm talking stuff like Hitchcock, Leone, Kurosawa, Welles, Bogart, Stewart, etc. I mean, I guess I'd rather buy one fantastic movie for $30 instead of six mediocre ones for $6 each at DD, but is there any way to get them cheaper? Some directors/actors have collections of their own, but usually they have several volumes of sets that are pricey, and seldom if ever does one set contain all of their good movies. Criterions are usually very expensive.

So, I guess I'm asking, should I get criterions or sets or score for used stuff?

get the non criterion versions. Buying used dvds off of ebay is an excellent and cheaper alternative to DDD or amazon

i've had limited success with Amazon marketplace too

my only advice with ebay would be to always contact the seller first and make sure it's a retail version of a Region 1 DVD and not a DVD-R or something

people make deceptive listings

but if they have feedback that's 96%+ then you should be ok

also i would just consider each Criterion separately. some of them are def. worth getting b/c they are the best versions of the films out, or they have the best bonus features. sometimes you can do just as well with the budget version of the title though.
