(AP) Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Gumbleton of Detroit, arguing for more time for sex abuse victims to sue the Roman Catholic Church, says he was abused by a priest 60 years ago.

Gumbleton, 75, told The Washington Post in an interview published in Wednesday's editions that he was "inappropriately touched" by a priest in 1945 when he was a ninth grader at Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit.

He is believed to be the first U.S. bishop to disclose that he was a victim of clergy sexual abuse and also the first to endorse proposals in several states to remove time limits that have prevented many victims of sex abuse from suing the church.

"I don't want to exaggerate that I was terribly damaged," Gumbleton told the Post in a telephone interview. "It was not the kind of sexual abuse that many of the victims experience."

But he said the experience helps him understand why sex abuse victims often cannot bring themselves to file lawsuits within the period allowed by the statute of limitations, which in many states is two to five years after the alleged crime.

"They are intimidated, embarrassed, and they just bury it," he told the Post. "I understand that. I never told my parents. ... I never told anybody."

The Post said Gumbleton initially disclosed his abuse in remarks prepared for a news conference Wednesday outside the Ohio State and elaborated in the telephone interview.

He was appearing in support of a bill pending in the Ohio House that would open a one-year window for sex abuse victims to sue the church for incidents that occurred years ago. The state senate has already passed the bill.

"As often happens in these cases," Gumbleton told the Post, the priest would invite him and another boy to a weekend cabin. "At some point, he would start wrestling with one of us. Then he would be putting his hands into your pants."

He declined to identify the priest, but said he has been dead for more than 10 years. "I don't have any animosity for him. I hope he's praying for me in heaven," he said.

He told the Post that opening the window to additional law suits in Ohio and elsewhere "could cost the church some money, but it also could bring a great deal of healing to a lot of victims."

"I've been saying for 10 years that these cases should be handled with pastoral sensitivity, not just in an adversarial legal way," he said. "I've also felt strongly that bishops should be talking to these victims, and so often they haven't been."

Not exactly the type of job you'd think someone would have after having a priest put his hand down his pants.

Okay, you want to play the sterotype child abuser thread? I'll play too.

An AIDS activist was one of two people accused of sex crimes against a 13-year-old boy last year over several weeks.

Ricky Odell Yow, 42, of Elon, was charged with five counts of taking indecent liberties with a child, three counts each of a first-degree sex offense with a child, using a minor to assist in an obscenity, first-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, crimes against nature, and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

He was in jail Tuesday under $1.5 million bond.

Deputies last week arrested Douglas Wayne Murphy, 43, who lives at the same address as Yow, on the same charges. His bond was also set at $1.5 million.

Randy Jones, spokesman for the Alamance County Sheriff's Department, said the charges stemmed from several incidents last year.

Yow is founder of Global Wheel of Hope, an organization that performs AIDS/HIV education, and was diagnosed with the disease 18 years ago.

Of course I just can't let it go at that. Not for our AIDS infected homosexual pedophile and self-proclaimed activist hoping to "educate" young people.

No, no, no far too easy.

Elon students raise awareness about AIDS Adam Smith - Reporter Ricky Yow, an Alamance County resident living with AIDS, spoke to students about his experiences. He recently began an organization called Global Wheel of Hope to increase awareness about the disease.

Ricky Yow, a resident of Alamance County living with AIDS, spoke to a small crowd in Moseley Center during AIDS Awareness Week at Elon Nov. 18-23. He recently began an AIDS organization, Global Wheel of Hope, to increase awareness, and he spoke to students and faculty about what it is like to live with the disease.

When he was first diagnosed, Yow retook the test, not being able to accept that he was positive.

After being diagnosed, Yow said, "I never planned on a future." Of the 15-20 people Yow used to be close friends with, "there are only two of us left." Most of his friends have died from the disease. So it's my duty to make sure a younger generation has no future, even if I have to abuse them and infect them myself.

"It’s a blessing I’m still alive and can speak to people today," he said. Yow, who will turn 40 this year said he believes the big problem with teenagers is the lack of education on the subject of HIV and AIDS. "I want to see young people make good choices," he said. "Young people are making up most of the numbers of new infections." Yes, I want to see these young people make "good" choices like befriending me. The harmless AIDS activist who only wants to help you. Now take off your pants little boy, I have something for you.

Elon Cares, the HiV/AIDS awareness group on campus, planned several events throughout AIDS Awareness Week. Nationally held the first week in December, the awareness week at Elon was recognized early because of a conflict with finals.

Throughout the week, a table was set up in Moseley Center, where volunteers handed out bags filled with brochures and condoms, as well as the famous red ribbon. AIDS awareness is important, coordinator Steve Wagner said, "because AIDS is a disease that can be prevented with education." Unfortunately AIDS can't be prevented by me molesting you and taking advatage of the trust of a young boy. MUHAHAHAHAHAHA!

The awareness week ended with the sex-trivia game show at Midnight Meals in the Zone. "Let’s Talk About Sex," the jeopardy-styled show, attracted a large audience. Categories for the show included prophylactics, "sextras," HIV/AIDS and STDs. Audience participation questions were asked between rounds.

Wagner says the event was successful, because "it brought together the critical information of AIDS and STDs while incorporating fun and humor." Plus, it gives me a bunch of character witnesses in case I get caugt for sticking little boys with my AIDS infected penis.

The movie night on Monday and the speaker on Wednesday had small crowds, but both were important events, Wagner said. Next semester, Elon Cares will sponsor another awareness week to draw more participation from students. Hopefully those students will bring their younger brothers and nephews. ***LICKS CHOPS***.

With infections in college age students growing, it is important for students to know the risks and consequences of their actions, Wagner said. I'm out there every day personally trying to increase the risk the infection rates of middle school students.

How are aids awareness spokesman stereotypical of child sex abusers?

Anyway, this guy should be locked up for the rest of his life as well.

You know, the homosexuals are pedophiles sterotype.

Boom, there you go. Perfect example.

Now all gays molest children, just like all priests do in liberals minds.

I have conclusive proof just like the OP.

Somebody's off their meds...

This priest should have told his story years ago back when the Church was still pretending that all these allegations were false. I commend him for finally coming forward but he could have done a lot more good decades ago when the pedophile priests were being traded to other dioceses.

PAD, two things. First, your article indicates your own stereotypes since nowhere in that article does is mention him being homosexual. That is something you added. And since studies show pedophilia and homosexuality are not connected, the only other explanation is you just don't know any better.

Second, a high ranking member of an organization that has had large scale sexual abuse stating that he was also abused is anything but stereotypical. If anything it shows a high ranking member opposing the abuse and stating that he himself, a member of the catholic hierarchy, is also a victim. If we are relying in stereotypes then that last thin we should expect is someone in his position to be a victim.
