I recently bought a Nintendo DS for my Girlfriend and wanted hers to be special...

Now, I've painted consoles before, and personally...I'm done with that... sheesh... it was a pain in the ass.

So I figured I'd try a new approach..

I photoshopped this concept, and bought the crystals... when it comes in... I'll show you the finished deal...

Whatt'ya guys think? And PS: I know its a little gaudy... but I'm trying to do this out of love, lets know be too harsh... :D

that actually doesn't look bad.. for a girl, of course. Nice work on the photoshop, btw. If it wasn't for the sparkles, I would've thought that was a real picture.

It doesn't look bad at all, though it certainly looks like it would be a pain to individually glue all those little crystals. That's love for you :)

Personally, I would prefer to not have the colored crystals. Keeping to the clear ones would maximize the bling in my eyes. The red and pink do look decent though, but I think I would like it better without the green? I dunno. Just my very humble opinion.

Well, nevermind then :)

btw, where did you buy the crystals?

That looks real cool, but be ready to spend some time on that. My friend did her cell phone and it took her awhile. I'll be looking forward to seeing it when it's complete. GOOD LUCK

I'm not too sure about the crystals either, they might start falling off after some abuse and some cheap glue. Of course thats whats going to get the extra bling on it so I guess its ok.

1 rogue crystal falls in between the clamshell, and you've got yourself 2 scratched screens. Also, make sure it doesn't add too much weight to the system, and make sure it doesn't hinder play at all.

If you could...guh, I don't know what it is called. But the previous gf and I used to watch shows like Trading Spaces and While you Were out. There is this clear material you can buy that's kind of like wax - you melt it and pour it on a surface, let it dry, and it creates a clear coat. For example, on one of those shows they made something like a placemat with shells, and to seal it, they poured this stuff over it. It effectively keeps everything in place but is clear, so it's a good sealant.

Theoretically you could do that here, but it would add extra weight and time and material and money...

It's something to think about, though.

Anyway, good luck with it.
Its for the top only... so unless she holds it wierd she should be ok... and the time isnt an issue.
sounds like an awesome plan to me - I'll commission you to do my sisters if it comes out looking good ;)

Yea, well... I'm only putting it on the top... so its not gonna hinder play, and I doubt it adds much weight at all. About the rogue crystal... I'll take my chances... One good fall to the ground could shadder a Nintendo DS and thats way more likely.

if you dont use cheap glue and you get crazy glue or something they wont fall off so long as you take care of it, which im sure youre prepared to do, good luck with your project, it should come out great

Mooky,

Not sure if you wanted to go the skin route but I know you are good with photoshop and
www.decalgirl.com lets you design your own skin. They also have a ton of ones already made. I realize you couldn't get the whole shiny bling effect but you wouldn't have to deal with weight issue, rogue crystals, yada yada yada. Either way good luck and show us the finished work.

Maybe you should get a skin to do the bead work on so if it comes out wrong, you just peel the skin off... no harm, no foul. Perhaps you could even design a skin to match the pattern so you could follow along that (but then you would have to know like the exact size of the beads).

looks good! If you can replicate that it'll be great. Gifts that look like they took a long time or effort to make are always a hit and thoughtful. might want to get her Nintendogs too while you're at it (when it comes out, hopefully her bday is close to that date).

Update: I got the DS I was gonna do it with, but it doesnt look new enough... so I'm gonna keep the used one and buy her a pink new DS.
