why a bmw? among the premier luxury cars, i believe they consistently rate near the bottom of the list
i would suggest he check out the relevant issues of the latest popular car mags before making the commitment
Why BMW? Because the BMW is a true drivers car. Everything about the BMW is built for the drive so that you can enjoy it. You get a MB to roll around in, you get a BMW to DRIVE it hard. Like you stole it. Like I drive mine constantly.
If he's not much of a driver, then I'd say a 5 or 7 is good. If he's not a driving enthusiast do NOT get an M3. The M3 is a balls out sports car, and from the way it sounds he doesn't want that. The same goes for the M5, as it's only a manual. The new one coming out will probaly be above the price limit and is only available in a 7 speed SMG which is a horrible transmission.
If he wants to get an SUV, the 4.8is X5 is amazing. Since it's basically a 5 series platform, it will handle just about as well as any 5 series. It's got plently of power to boot, too. Don't expect to take it off-road though, as it performs rather badly in extreme off-roading(who takes their SUV off-roading anyways?).
The 6 isn't a sports car, it's what I like to call a "Rich Man's Coupe". It looks nice and all... but It's not exactly a sports car. You drive the car to tell everyone you've made it. There's not much room in the back seats, even though it's a huge car. Reminds me of my moms XJS. The back seats are for insurance purposes only. The new active steering on it makes the car more like a simulator when driving. It's almost as if you're playing a video game when you drive it. You're not exactly sure when it's going to break traction and if it will. In a BMW, you ought to be able to know when it's near its limit.
Cag1000, unless you like to race your car then the M3 would be wasted. Everyone I've talked to(myself included) that has driven one agree it's too fast for the normal person. Expect huge insurance rates on the ///M Powered beast.
BMW. Sheer Driving Pleasure.
