Yes...these are not animated bits on a TV screen...but flat, cardboard or plastic games with pieces you move around so you can eventually throw it across the room, or dance on it in joy of beating the gloating kid's ass next door...

Anyway, I'm looking to get a military/wargame boardgame (RHYMEY!) for my father for Christmas...and... I don't know what to get...anyone? I need some sites and/or suggestions...and preferrably modern or WW2ish, and not too simple. Danke danke!

Ticket to Ride, Ticket to Ride, Ticket to Ride.

Back-up suggestion: Ticket to Ride Europe.

Either game is $40 and well worth it. People who enjoy playing boardgames will play it all the time.

Well that site is good but I am not getting a boardgame about locomotives and trains....WW2 please :/ thanks anyway

Axis and Allies is very good, if rather basic.
Ticket to ride I found extremely extremly overrated, the strategy is nearly non-existant.

If you really want something "not too easy".. get ahold of Totaler Krieg!. Granted, its rather more on the pathetically geeky hardcore WW2 strategy side of the table, but its great. Just be forewarned, a full game takes ~36-48 hours to finish.

there's one called Go. it's like Japanese Othello, but better.

I have Risk 1, the very original from like 1990's...not worthwhile IMO... I saw Axis and Allies at the Mall today, .....$35, $45...... can anyone compare Attack! with Axis and Allies??

I'm trying to spend ~$35ish...but I want some good suggestions, danke!

Well I was born in the 90's so....thats the only one I've seen =P

Also, I got REALLY lucky. I found Axis and Allies at Good Will for $2! All pieces and everything except manual (easy to find online) so I'm going to get that along with Attack! :D

I did see a really cool Star Wars Clone Edition of Risk at the mall though, that looked awesome o.o

Thanks for all help!

it's not really war-based, but maybe Settlers of Catan? It's a resource building game... build settlements, roads, cities. You trade different resources to build stuff. It's good. Three player minimum, though, if I remember correctly.

Another, maybe less well known game I like is Fossil. It's pure strategy, and pretty simple to learn. Great with 2 players, still fun with more.

I'm also a fan of Filthy Rich, but I'm not sure if it's available any more. It's a business building game, and you put the signs in a card folder (like how you'd keep baseball/gaming cards in) and depending on what page is on top some of the signs will be covered by others. More fun with more players.

Mostly non-war games, so I'm not sure if that helps, but good luck finding him the right game!

Battle Cry is good Civil War board game, though it's not terribly complex.

I'm also suprised nobody mentioned Memoir '44, besides Axis & Allies it's the first WWII board game that comes to mind.

Board games are passe. If you're gonna go the tabletop route, you might as well get Warhammer 40k. I gotta warn ya, it's not for the faint of heart, nor the little of patience (and for that matter, a decent amount of $$$$$ )
