Just in case anyone isn't aware Circuit City announced that they are firing 3400 "overpaid" workers and allowing them to re-apply for their jobs in 10 weeks at a lower rate of pay. After losing their tenure, vacation time, accrued sick pay, benefits, etc. I've lurked around a few boards with messages from CC employees that both were and weren't included in the firings. They were pulled aside and read a prepared form letter signed by the CEO then escorted off the premises. Some of the workers had been with the company upwards of 15 years. Most made somewhere between $10 and $20 an hour. Any hourly employee making more than $.51 over the "cap" was let go. One message I read was from a 55 year old man who thought he had done everything he needed to do to make sure he had job security. He worked hard. Came in early and stayed late. Tried to take on more responsibility than his job description required. Tried to be a lynchpin for the place he worked. His store manager told him that he was sorry and that he didn't know how he was going to be able to run the store without him, but that there were no exceptions. The raises he was given were based on performance and now he's being punished for doing an exceptional job?? He said that it felt like entrapment to him. One of the people fired led the entire company last year in selling warranties. It might not be you or anyone you know today, but if there are no serious repercussions for the company it will be tomorrow.
