any difference compared to in store? I'm worried gamestop might sell me an older model which will give me an RROD

I still have my 120 HDD for the FAT model as well as some store credit left, which is why I want to take advantage of this deal for $100.

Also I was wondering if it would be ok to purcahse one online and buy a warranty in store, I don't trust used 360s

My story is I bought a used Wii B&M before and there was a Guitar hero world tour game inside. Does gamestop even try turning the system when accepting it as trade in?

I found this video pretty funny

Also wondering why gamestop doesn't give us the original box, is this YMMV when you order online or buying in store? Because in store all I see is them give a generic box with their hand writing on it. Not that I save the box, just noticing it.

It's not just RROD, there are also disc read errors and console freezing with the older models.
Although any console made after August 2009 should be good.

Keep in mind that when Microsoft Ban's people from LIVE, they actually Ban the Console and not the gamer tag. People will trade in their banned console and get a new one. I would just go and get one on Blcak Friday at Target, they are selling the $199.99 version at retail and throwing in a $50 Gift Card. Though I can not think of a way to transfer your stuff....USB?

with no controller and I have to force myself to buy another HDD, no thanks. Also I don't want to deal with black friday ;)

So if it's a banned console and you activate a gold card, what happens next?

on Top of this I just called a local gamestop and he says I can't buy a used one online and go in store and buy the warranty o_O .

Wouldn't I be able just to do a return and repurchase?

I would never buy a used console in this day. You have a very narrow return window and there are plenty of tricks to get a console to work for a few weeks before it fails.

Yeah, I cannot see myself buying a used console nowadays. Maybe a Wii. Wii's seem to be pretty reliable. But a 360? No way. As others have already mentioned, there can be so many damn problems with the things. Sure, if something is obviously wrong when you get home/receive the system, you can return it, but do you really want the hassle of having to return a system or two or three? And as was also previously mentioned, the even bigger problem is getting a console that is on its last legs and dies within after a month. Then, you're just shit out of luck.

I don't understand all the negative feedbacks about a used 360 on here

so if a model is manfactured after 2009 then it's a safe call I assume? But yeah I was planning to pick it up with a warranty

Also, I have my old sega saturn purchased from Funcoland 10 years ago, and guess what? It's still rolling.

You really don't want to buy a used 360 dude, unless it's a slim (which I highly doubt), and even then, I'd be wondering why someone dumped it off at Gamestop.

You're looking at a console that is either dead, dying, or banned, and it's really not worth taking a chance on. Yeah, it's CHEAP ass gamer, but that doesn't mean you have to be dumb about it.

Get a slim Arcade unit, crack open your old HD, and sell whatever accessories you don't need to bring the cost down.

I prefer the xbox for my gaming (and I own 3 but that is beside the point), anyways the :360: is the ABSOLUTE WORST console to buy a refurb. Save a bit of extra cash to spend and get a new console. It will save you a big ass headache dealing with a potential E74, RROD, and/or any other issues. I mean the GS warranty is good and all but taking the console and getting it swapped out will be a pain the in ass too.

I agree with Scorch's comment. Don't be stupid about this. It is the most unreliable console on the market and perhaps ever (minus the slim).

Its very simple to see why people do not recommend used 360s. When looking at a xbox 360s life, you look at it as WHEN its going to die, not IF. If the 360 has been traded in, chances are it was abused to hell and back, and now you end up with a console on its last legs just to save 50 or so bucks. Its not worth the risk.

I think all you guys are missing the key word here, refurb, which means if the console had an issue it has been fixed...I have had several used consoles that weren't refurbs and have only had RROD 1 time. So it's hit or miss with the issues, but your best bet is to make sure you get the newest one there, just have them look at the manufacture date and get the newest one. And as for your other question about the box, not everyone brings the box when they trade it in to gamestop, which is why you don't always get the box lol. Also, they definitely turn on the console when you trade them in, they turn them on and test them when you trade them in, unless it had RROD or something where you can't test them, but in that case I'm sure at some point when it was fixed they turned it on and tested it.

I am kinda with the other guys though, you might as well just save for a new one. There are gonna be killer deals for black friday so you should be able to get a good deal.

That's becuase it's a Saturn, not becuase refurbs are always inherently a good deal.

Quite simply, until August '09, Xbox 360s had such a high fail rate that buying a used one is just a bad idea- are you getting one someone did the towel trick on that'll die in a week or two? Even if it was properly refurbed by Microsoft, it could still die again. (My fiance's did.)

If you must buy one of these, having to go in-store is actually a GOOD thing. Try and catch them at a quiet time of day, and ask to check out the system beforehand. If they'll let you plug it in real quick, so much the better: you can see if it's running hot/loud/at all. I'm sure somewhere on the 'net you can find a way to check about when the console was made too. Obviously, you'll need the warranty.

It would be better, though, to get a new console and put your credit into games. Perhaps some poking around will find somewhere with old model 360s they need to clear out. Or just sell the HDD and have more money/credit for a new system. Just don't say we didn't warn you if you get a used one and it's a lemon.

Oh, and it's a generic box because they don't ship them with new boxes- mircosoft doesn't want people selling refurbs as new, and some gamestops don't want to actually send the systems in to be refurbed... they just package 'em up and sell 'em.

You don't want one used/refurbished. Mine was working great (for the 10 mins) when they tested in the store to accept it. But I knew that it was on its last leg. Blame Microsoft, blame me, blame whoever you want, but the bottom line is that you don't want the headache that I just turned in.

Save a few bucs, and buy a new one.

The 360 has one of the worst failure rates of a major gaming console ever. How does a gamer not know that?

I only owned 1 360 before, this was several years back (when DOA first came out), I sold it due to the lack of games that time

still.

My 360 red ringed again awhile back out of waranty. I was thinking about this but personally I don't trust this at all. If I'm getting a new Xbox it will be a 360 S. Microsoft failed me way too much with the original model. Not only did all of them die of RROD but leading up to it I had freezing issues, disk drive errors, and other annoying crap.

I too am looking at getting a 360. I am a cheapass but I would never buy a used 360 or ps3. Just wait for black friday and buy a new one , don't be a cheapass on these consoles.
