CAGiversary!

With the Virtual Console gifting ability becoming available today, I thought we here in the CAG community could start a Secret Santa gift exchange. The way it'd work here is if you're up for it, post here that you want to participate, then post all of the VC games you have, and finally post your Friend Code. Saying that you'll participate here means you'll actually be upstanding about it and follow through with gifting a VC game to someone and that you'll be getting one from someone else also! Just a thought - Could we make this an official trade on CAG and exchange feedback to up the pull of responsibility to perform? Should we impose a limit on participants to only be eligible if they've been around for more than X months?

So, at a later date, I can close this topic to new participants, and throw everyone's name in a hat (so to speak) and draw out names such that everyone has someone to gift a VC game to and everyone has their own Secret Santa. Then, maybe to overcome the Friend Code situation, I can break it down in to groups of 10 or so, so that everyone adds these 10 people from their group to their FC list and one of those 10 will be the person they're gifting (which they'll know) and one more of those 10 will be someone that's going to be sending them a VC Gift.

Anyone have any more ideas, suggestions, time constraints? I'm thinking the only requirement for this VC exchange is that everyone has to send at least one VC game to the person they're paired up with. So some might choose just to send a NES game at 500 points, some generous souls may go all out and send Sin and Punishment at 1200 points. So be aware, that you may end up sending someone else a 1000 point N64 game but may end up only reciving a 500 point NES game. But that's how the holidays go, isn't it? Some people can afford to give more than others. As part of this Secret Santa, I want everyone to feel comfortable giving as much as they can spare. Whether that means one 500 point game to you, or all of the Ecco Genesis games to another (ugh) just gift what you think is appropriate. Now, please post here so we can get this Secret Santa exchange rolling! Non Christians, athiests, and agnostics (like myself) are certainly welcome to join to! Everyone loves gift exchanges, right?

Please, for administrative measures (as in my organizing all the participants), please post your entries in to this VC game exchange just as I do below:

CAG name
Wii name
Wii friend code
Country (VC games can only be gifted to others within the same country)
VC games you own (be them on your VC or on old cartridges if you do not want someone to send you a VC version of the game)

Issues to resolve
 • Should we limit participants to those who have been active on CAG for X months?
 • Should we set a minimum purchase requirement?
 • Can we exchange trader feedback for this?
 • How long should registration be open?
 • When should the actual gifting occur?
 • How do we settle the matter of friend codes?
Please post any suggestions you have for those issues, or any other issues you see that may arise!

Ah thanks for that. I thought I had heard about that and did a quick search - but only found a secret santa of real gifts. Thanks phreak5k.
"what happens if someone is gifted a game they already downloaded?"
That was kind of my "issue" with the other secret santa exchange, except for games in other mediums (i.e. GameCube, GBA, DS). If you want to handle that, I would love to participate. And I don't think we would be detracting anything from the other one as well since the sign ups area already closed.

oo, this is interesting. did anyon'es wii light up?

I'm going to have to think about this still, but I'm definitely considering it. As far as the "duplicate" game issue goes (from Nintendo's press release):

If your friend already has the game you're trying to give, you'll get a simple message and be bumped back into the catalog to continue shopping.

So that's nice. What I think we should just do is have sign ups for about 10 days or so, and then after than I'll pair everyone up so that they know who they're supposed to buy for and a list of people that are potentially going to buy for them - that way they still have to enter a few friend codes, but they don't have to enter the friend codes of every participant. I still like the idea of posting all of your games that you already own since that'll give people a good feel for what you like and also allow them to identify some real holes in your purchase history. I'm hoping that out of this I'll get a game back that I never would have purchased on my own and find that I love it.

Do you mean you want people to list if they own, say Sonic on the Sonic Collection so that they don't get it sent to them? And sign ups are definitely closed on the other Secret Santa thread.

Exactly. I'll use myself as an example. I already own Link to the Past in 2 other places (gba/snes), if I receive LTTP as a gift, it's pretty much a waste for me and for them since I'm not likely to play it any time soon.

As a giver, I want my gift to be something they don't already own. I'm not going to buy a friend a duplicate game if they already own it, and I feel it should be the same way here. Obviously, Nintendo has already helped to prevent some of this by not allowing you to buy duplicate VC games, but I wish that other games could be included as well as a "not buy I already own" option.

But what you'll do is when you sign up, just simply post A Link to the Past with all of the other Virtual Console games that you already own. That way no one will try to buy it for you. You could also put any games that you absolutely do not want in the list of games you already own, too. So when I've paired up all of our participants, I'll include their "eligibility post" in a PM. So say you sign up and have to buy something for me (there are no other participants right now!) I'd send you a PM saying something like this:

Hey CAG Secret Santa! You've been chosen as iowaholdem's Secret Santa! Here's his information:

iowaholdem
loesjoel
6338 2667 6146 5783
NES: Punchout!! Super C, Super Mario Bros 2 (JPN), Super Mario Bros 3
SNES: Zelda A Link to the Past, Super Mario World
GEN: Gunstar Heroes
N64: Zelda Ocarina of Time, Mario Kart 64, Paper Mario, Yoshi's Story

Remember: don't send him any of the games he's already listed! Know what you're going to send yet? Hopefully it's something good and something equally good comes your way from your Secret Santa!

Some thoughts to consider...
Should we limit participants to those who have been active on CAG for X months?
There needs to be some sort of requirement, otherwise some newbies might come in looking to try to score some free VC games with the idea to never send any in the first place.
Should we set a minimum purchase requirement?
At least a range of points. For example 1200-1500 worth of VC games. Also, the actual games need to be taken into consideration. There are some obvious crap games out there that I can't imagine nobody wants. Say someone sends Sin & Punishment only to receive DK Jr. Math as one of their games, I think it's a given that person is going to feel short changed. I know it's not about what you get, but it needs to at least be made somewhat fair.
Can we exchange trader feedback for this?
I don't see why not. Also it was mentioned in the other thread that person with lower trader feedback sends first. I like that idea as well.

OK, I agree that there should be some limitation. What do you think? 6 months, 9 months, a year? I think 1200-1500 points is too much to expect anyone to spend. I'm thinking more like 500+, though if everyone else agrees, maybe it should be more like 700-800+.

And what I like about a Secret Santa is that you don't know what you're getting, who it's coming from, or when (to an extent) you'll get it. So I wasn't thinking it'd be that two people just swap VC games. More like A buys for B, B buys for C, D buys for H, C buys for X and such, so feedback wouldn't have anything to do with it.

Of course, the way we could control the people that back out is that I'll have a list of everyone that was supposed to be buying for whom and if someone reports back that they never received a game, I can tell them who to contact and if they need to, who to leave a negative feedback for. Sound reasonable?

wouldn't it be unfair if lets say i bought sin and punishment for you (1200 points) and you only bought me SMB3?
wouldn't it be unfair if lets say i bought sin and punishment for you (1200 points) and you only bought me SMB3?
Well sure, if that's how you look at it. Not everyone is going to end up ahead in this. The idea is to participate if you're interested in taking that gamble so that you can give someone something you think they'll enjoy and hope you get something back that you enjoy. I just don't think that we'll get much participation if the minimum is like 1200 Wii points... but maybe that's just me. I spose we might lose some possible participants if they're worried about getting screwed, so to speak. Keep suggesting limits or voicing your concerns and maybe we can have a vote on it in a day or two when some interest has been drummed up.

I'd definitely agree you should set a minimum and maximum on the points spent, as well as probably a few months old into site (4-6+)
I'd definitely agree you should set a minimum and maximum on the points spent, as well as probably a few months old into site (4-6+)
Suggestions? I guess I'm thinking now 1000-1400 because that'd cover the most expensive game (Sin and Punishment) and would give someone the opportunity to pair one NES game with any other system except the N64. So basically you'd get at minimum, one N64 game or two NES games, or one NES game paired with one other game from any other system.

Also, I'm thinking the minimum length of being a member here ought to be about 6 months, or if less, a minimum CAG feedback of +5 with NO negatives.

Does all that sound fair to everyone?
