You will understand when/if you're a parent. The worst thing that could happen is death. Not likely, but the risk (chance of outcome happening times the severity of the problem, as we measure things in the software world) is too high. The chance is low, but the severity is enormous.
As Wombat said, they live in an apartment and a neighbor could easily have started a fire. Or an earthquake could happen (probably not kill Tai, but frighten him horribly). Or any number of other things.
In my opinion, all the comments in this thread are justified. I have two sons, btw: one is almost 6 and the other is 2.5.
