CAGcast #39: ...and Feeling Fine
I think the fact that you've never actually had that opportunity plays a big part in your perception of what that job and lifestyle is like.
Or have I? ;)

Similarly, growing up I always thought being a Disney animator would be the coolest job in the world. The recent downsizing notwithstanding, I probably have no actual grasp of the negative aspects of the job (and a skewed perception of the good parts).

I've had a lot of jobs before and since, and most of them have been more satisfying professionally than writing about video games. Not that I wouldn't do it again, given the right incentives, but it's not the land of milk and honey so many of you think it is.
I don't deny that a job like that is hard work. It certainly is, just as writing well about anything is something that takes skill, hard work and dedication. Sure, instead of writing about gaming, you could be writing to make the world a better place, thus creating a more fulfilling career and feelings of accomplishment, but you've got to admit, it beats writing about other things. FOR EXAMPLE, it's much worse having to cover a 3 hour Guardian Angels recruitment meeting than having to play Aquaman from start to finish, then having to write about it. :wall:

While it's true what you say about videogame journalism not being the land of milk and honey, it's still beats plenty of other things.

Considering I now edit a magazine covering the trash and recycling industry, I think I can safely say I've covered a wide range of the spectrum. ;)
