OK... I've checked out Estarland to get an idea on these, but I'm unfamiliar with many of them. So, please give me some decent ideas on the values. When I get around to it, I'm giong to try to take a couple of shots with the digital cam to show things if enough interest is raised. Anyways, here's the story.

My girlfriend nags me to go with her to visit a friend she works with in a shitty little town called Union Springs, about 50 miles east of Montgomery. Once she mentions that they have a fishing pond, I'm game. We pass the house and I decide to go into town beforehand to find a bait shop, as I prefer the old cane pole and shiner (minnow) method of pond fishing for bass and whatnot. Didn't find a bait shop, but saw a Movie Gallery with a liquidation sign posted reading "buy 2, get 4 free on everything." Being the CAG that I am, I pull into the joint. To my surprise, the first thing I see is a huge rack of classic games, all in the original boxes. Sure, there were some DVD's... but I left the g/f to that as I grabbed a basket and began the hunt.

Here's where I want the CAG input. I'm familiar with some of them, but not all of them. Hell... I didn't know of any Atlus SNES shooters prior to this. Here's this list, as I don't want to do all the research with Digitpress and figure demand on all of it.

All games include original boxes, some insterts, a couple complete:
SNES: (all labels are in great shape)
Chrono Trigger
Wing Commander: Secret Missions (inferior to the PC, I know.. but got it for the hell of it)
Captain Commando
King of Dragons
U.N. Squadron
R-Type III
Super Ghouls N Ghosts
Super Valis IV
Blazeon
Super Buster Bros
Tecmo Secret of the Stars

Genesis:
Castle of Illusion, Mickey Mouse (complete, but instructions are folded in half)
Time Killers
fuck (had to get fuck and insert the logo for shits and grins)
The Tick
Splatterhouse 2
Splatterhouse 3
Gunstar Heroes

Dreamcast:
Space Channel 5 (new)

Xbox:
Leisure Suit Larry (I know it sucks, but I'm a fan of the old PC games)

DVD's:
The Insider
Fog of War
Memento (been wanting all 3 of these movies for a while, but on the cheap)
2005 Sugar Bowl (perfect 2004 season of Auburn.. c'mon, I'm an Auburn fan, had to get it)

Grand total: $31

Now all of the classic games were $1.99 for SNES and $.99 for Genesis. Remember... everything was buy 2, get 4 free.. so that made my cost low.

Of course I know what Chrono Trigger is (bought it on release back in the day), but many I'm not too familiar with (hell, I know only a little bit about Gunstar Heroes, but that's because of the GBA re-release). Basically, gimme some input.

My girlfriend paid about $30 for some DVD's. I think it was a decent haul for her as well:
Pen and Teller: Bullshit (all volumes, have NEVER seen them at retail in Alabama)
Bowling for Columbine
Roger & Me
Control Room
Elf
Pee Wee's Playhouse Xmas Special
Peices of April
Mighty Wind

I think that's about it. If anyone sees a Movie Gallery shutting down around their location, I highly recommend checking the situation. Buy 2, get 4 free is a pretty sweet deal (even with their inflated prices on many things). I may go back and nab the rest of their SNES and Genesis games at the end of the week, but I haven't decided yet. So, gimme some feedback. This is more of a reconnaissance thing than bragging rights. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to fleabay, Estarland, or trade these things off yet.. so who knows.

Update: Ok, here's pics of the haul

Genesis:

SNES

DVD's

Here's most of what I got from the Blockbuster 50% sale (most DVD's and games were around $3)

Pic of free can of worms gotten after the haul for fishing at the friend's house (her husband owns some country store.. but the worms were free. They're kinda crunchy now as they've sat in my truck bed all day)

Congrats! You got a great deal.

I'm jealous of anyone who gets Chrono Trigger on the cheap :)

Cart-only I believe that game still fetches $40+ on Ebay.

Awesome deal. That was very similar to a movie gallery that was open in Auburn for a while. I posted a thread on it last summer:

http://www.cheapyd.com/forums/showthread.php?t=56614&highlight=movie+gallery

That one was buy 2 get 3 free. I would have scored a lot more had a hoarder not come in and literally bought over 500 games. I was so pissed.

I've heard that the distribution center for this old stuff was in Dothan. Might be worth calling them and seeing what's up. At the MG in Auburn they had SEALED NES games . . . Imagine what Dothan might have.

Great find. I remember them doing the same thing at the local Movie Gallery before they closed down, but this was a few years ago, and they sure as hell didn't have good games.

This must be the store that time forgot about.

I'd really like to find both of the splatterhouse games on the Genesis in the wild for my collection for even a reasonable price. My brain would probably get that funny feeling like it did a flip if I found them somewhere insanely cheap like this :)

I wonder how long these games have sat around for sale at this price (or close to this price) and what the population of this town is, I'm guessing about 50.

I know man... but I'm starting to wonder after seeing this kind of thing at Movie Gallery stores before.. if they just put old games in the back and store them. They have the GameZone store here in town, so you'd think that they would ship all the old games from stores to that place (they sell games for all systems there). If they do ship them back to the wherehouse.. I'd pay somebody to let me go through the shit. Also, Movie Gallery started in Dothan if I'm not mistaken.. hell, Troy's football stadium is named after Movie Gallery.
Wow - which movie gallery was it? Was there anything left? Great finds!
In a little ass town called Union Springs, between Montgomery and Eufala on highway 82 East. They still have things left, and the store closes this Sunday.

All the Genesis games were 99 cents a pop.. plus they were buy 2 get 4 free.. so basically, I got both Splatterhouses for $1.99, and got Gunstar Heroes, Time Killers, and 2 others for free.

I'm heading back to work.. I'm going to post some pics tonight once I find the digital camera. I'm kind of wanting to break out the Zippo fluid to start removing labels, but at the same time don't want to risk damaging the boxes are cart. labels by removing them (although Zippo fluid does a great job of it, better than Goo B Gone IMO).

By the way... my receipt read "bulk SNES/Genesis $1.99/.99".. I've got some theories on this. Anybody purchase an old game from Movie Gallery lately? If so, what was the price?

Shit! I used to sink tons of quarters in the old UN Squadron (Area88) arcade game. I forget how it played on SNES, but that's a nice find!

My local Movie Gallery closed a while ago. I didn't have the chance to see if they were have a clearance on all the old stock since they closed without much notice (there was a note on the door mentioning they are now closed and would accept returns of rentals for a few days).

I can see why they are closing. I'll never forget when I went to look at the used games and they had Gran Turismo 3 for $29.99 used when it was a Greatest Hits game already and some PS2 games were $48.99 used (nothing valueable that would demand such a high price) or how some games like Simpson's Road Rage were considered new release games even though they were out for over 2 years. Even worse, they sealed the used games and refused to let you look at the condition of the disc before you bought it (though you could return it if it didn't work)

Pics added to the post. I'm heading back there this weekend if possible, as the last day is Sunday.

I'm kind of wondering if there may be a universal drop on the used classic games.. they rang up at universal prices (.99 and 1.99), but I'm unable to test this theory without classic games at any of the other local Movie Galleries.

Hell, I'd fly to your state for those deals and fill up a suitcase. I need to remember to stop in all the video stores when I visit tiny towns, especially the mom and pop stores that probably still have the classic stuff sitting around.

Looking at your pics now I can say that is one freaking awesome SNES haul. I would be jealous if I still owned a SNES...

A co-worker of mine used to manage that Movie Gallery several years back. From the horror stories she's told me about that place, I'm glad to hear SOMETHING good came out of it. :)

Oh man.. I can imagine. Union Springs is a shithole, no doubt. I imagine it would have equalled working retail on Southern Blvd., only on a smaller scale. From what my g/f's friend told me, shotguns come in real handy down there (especially since they own a store/gas station just outside of town).

Union Springs is probably the only town in the state without a Regions Bank.
