This week I was lucky enough to find a mint Marvel vs Capcom 2 for the PS2 at a local Game Stop. I say mint but there was one flaw/issue - it was missing the manual.

I figured I had nothing to loose, I emailed Capcom inquiring if they had a manual available. I included my mailing address in the email. This is the reply I received from them today:

Hello Earl,

Thank you for contacting Capcom U.S.A., Inc.

We do have a manual for this game and I have sent one out to you to the address you provided below. You will not be charged for the manual. You should expect to see it within the next 10-12 business days. We appreciate your continued support of Capcom products!

Thank you,

Wait wait wait...your name is Earl?

Why would you say that?

If it is because of the name edited by me, I did that. There was a legalese disclaimer at the bottom of their email (probably corporate policy) stating how emails are intended for the addressee, contain confidential information, etc. So I figured it was in my best interest not to include his email address, name and phone number over the internet! :)

I'm just happy with their service.

Yep, "My Name is Earl"...and I DO believe in Karma! :) Only unlike the tv actor I have no bushy black hair...I'm bald as hell. :(

This is why there's really nothing lost in trying to contact some of these companies. I remember years ago, back in the 90's, you were apt to get information that even gaming magazines weren't privvy to if you sent nice, thankful letters to particular companies. I found out why Squaresoft never fully went for both Final Fantasy 5 and Breath of Fire 2 way back when GamePro and EGM were still tauting that they were on the way. I wonder if this still holds somewhat true today...?

But congrats, OP! This is fantastic!

My personal experience with Capcom customer service representatives also left a good impression on me. When I got a bootleg Mega Man Battle Network game off eBay, the representative I talked to about it made every effort to help get the information and expert opinion that Paypal needed to be convinced it was bootleg. They even faxed the information to Paypal themselves. And the rep was overall very friendly... I was very impressed. Kudos to their customer service.

Yep nothing to loose. I'm going to email Koei now inquiring about one for my PTO IV. As you say there is nothing to loose. If they don't have one they don't have one. If they do, I don't mind paying for it. And they just might be generous as Capcom was.

Any chance you could tell us what the scoop is? Pretty please?

I don't know about Capcom, but since we're sharing the love around here, i'd like to throw out a good word for THQ. I bought Wrestlemania 21 (XB), the store wouldn't take it back, I e-mailed them telling them how bad it sucked and asked if we could work something out. I figured why not, so I suggested that I pick a game from their library of equal or lesser value. As luck would have it, there was a 90 day return policy and Destroy All Humans was coming out next month. They agreed to it. I shipped them the game, along with a thank you note, and an attachment of the original e-mail. I shipped it out. Exactly 7 days later, Destroy All Humans was on my doorstep. I dunno about you guys, but Tennessee to California, then back to Tennessee in 7 days.. that's pretty good. That's hella fast.

Oh, and not only that, but over the July 4th holiday, they e-mailed me and wished me a happy 4th with my family and asked if everything was going okay with the game. Now that is customer service.

Dang, that's pretty sweet.

I sent a $5 check to Capcom for a SFII: Special Champion Edition manual sometime in the summer of 2004. They still have not cashed the check. Maybe they randomly give manuals out for free.

Capcom customer service is still good... nice to know. They were pretty good to me when I was a dumbass 5th grader who couldn't figure out how to beat Agile in Megaman X2. They sent me a boss guide for all 3 Megaman X games for the SNES, as well as a nifty Megaman X3 postcard.

I wish I still had that stuff...

Years ago, when Ocarina of Time was released, I sent Nintendo an email about how much I loved the game, and I asked them if they had anything Zelda related that they might want to send me. Didn't expect anything, but a few weeks later, I received a large envelope from them. Inside was a picture of the fire dragon (don't remember his name) and Link fighting him, with autographs from the NOA development/localization team! I was shocked, and it was the coolest thing I had even been given for free!

That's nice of them. I wonder if they would do that for me. I got Tron Bonne a while back but I don't have the back cover of the CD. Grats!

Heh, I'm happy for you OP. I wish they were that responsive when I emailed them about opening my new copy of Viewtiful Joe 2 and finding no disc. That was about 5 months ago, still haven't received a response. Luckily K-Mart let me return it.

All that said, I should probably email THQ about a manual for Tetris Worlds. My only incomplete GC game.
Any chance you could tell us what the scoop is? Pretty please?
From what I can remember from the letter they said specifically that Final Fantasy 5, the game itself, really wasn't shaping up to their current standards at the time. As for Breath of Fire 2 I forget the reason but I think it had something to do with there not being that much of a particular market for that one, possibly due to somewhat lower-than-expected sales for Breath of Fire and the amount of time required to localize 2?

Oh well, I'm just happy that Breath of Fire 2 made it over here through Capcom about a year or so after Square's response and Final Fantasy 5 came down the pipe...although I preferred Mark Rosa's ancient FF5 fan-translation far more than the ARRRR, FARIS BE A PIRATE AND TALKS LIKE ONE FOR 40 HOURS fest. :D

I hated all 3 of my capcom service issues. 92' I signed up for the club they had and picked out the megaman poster...I got the rescue rangers poster and they wouldnt fix it. That wasnt a big issue with me.
In 95 I bought Darkstalkers (again) and sent away for a free morrigan figure. It came in its box busted up, I fixed it with crazy glue but you could still see it was repaired. I wrote them a letter asking about shipping it back for a replacement and got no reply.

And in the dreamcast days there was that fighters edge club. My friend worked at blockbuster and gave me tons of points for all the games so I was stoked about getting a ton of free stuff. Then they just cancelled the program and thought they could sell it to me.

It's nice to see from the replies that alot of the game companies really go the extra mile for Customer Service.

Add Koei to that list too. Their website wasn't as user friendly as far as email contacts as Capcom's but it did have the phone numbers. I called them and talked to their customer service today specifically requesting to purchase a copy of PTO IV's manual. The lady asked for my mailing information and said she'd send one right out. I inquired how much I owed her and she said there would be no charge.

Great customer service from these two in my experience.

So allways email or call, you have nothing to loose and perhaps a rare out of print accessorie to complete your game to gain.

A couple of years ago I e-mailed the Manga webmaster a question about the Evangelion movies (Death & Rebirth / End of...) and he responded in a hour with a planned cast and feature list. The DVDs were months off and that info hadn't made it's way to press yet. My heart rate went up a little bit that day.

I love Eva. ;)

Nintendo has always been really good with service to me. Sony support e-mails seem to enter a e-mail blackhole or something. I can't think of any other game compaines I've talked to...

Here, comes the floodgates of cheapassgamer asking the companys for every front and cover slips and manuals they got missing from Ebgames and Gamestop.

Now,if we gather togethor and demand for phoenix wright maybe Capcom release more copies.I doubt that will happen due to low sales numbers

I emailed Konami about getting possibly a box/manual for ZOE on gba. All they could offer me was a photocopied manual for like 5 bucks...that sucked.

It's not a funny name, I had it way before he did! :)

Besides I have heard it all....Earl the Pearl....Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl....the worst was when the Dixie Chicks came out with that song "Earl's Got To Go"....my wife played it over, and over, and over...... :( (she still hasn't killed me off with black eyed peas...yet).
the funny thing about this, is that your name is earl
Wow, I didnt know companies cared. Imma e-mail NIS about Makai Kingdom because I need a Manual. Maybe they can give me free stuff too.

After seeing this post I decided to email Capcom to see if they had any of the controller manuals for Steel Battalion (since my used one didn't have it). The rep also offered to mail me one free of charge, which is very cool.

So much CAG/corparate love going around. Im not missing anything but kinda wish I was now :(

I really wanted some of those Sony PSP demo disk theyve been giving out lately but the Sony email said they had no idea about them :)

I remembered back in 6th grade how I was a big fan of Sega during there glory years. A class assignment I had was to write to a company about there product and how you liked or disliked it. Of course I wrote to sega about there master system and guess what? a few weeks later they sent me some cool posters from the sega genesis games. I have been loyal ever since :p lol..yea im such a dork but it was free right?

Good to see that a company will go the extra mile these days. Funny thing is, it was probably one employee that was having a good day and they decided to hook you up for whatever reason. Chalk it up to karma or to just recognizing that it's a great time to be a cheap ass gamer.

i've "spammed" lots of companies in a couple minutes... i'll keep u posted...heh heh. glad to see some cags got lucky. i'm trying my luck with capcom, too.

Since My Name is Earl, I'll chalk it up to Karma - though I really don't know what good thing I've done lately....better go to church on Sunday!

I had the same assignment in grade school but it was tradition for us to send a letter to Nerf saying our gun was broken. They would send you a BRAND new nerf gun in box back to the school with a letter that said please return the broken which none of us did. I believe this was 3rd grade but it was fun, we kept passing it down to the lower grade when the assignment came up. However, they never sent you the same gun. Usually it was totally different model.

here's my list of "emails and responses" so far: more to be added, i'm sure of it....

Is this what we've all become? Writing and calling up companies for useless free crap?

I emailed Nintendo that I never got my Kirby Pink Stylus a few weeks ago. Which I registered for on the first day they announced the promotion. I remember because I went to buy the game that day for the stylus (I was going to buy the game someday anyway).

That afternoon, I was emailed a shipping notice. A couple days later I got my pink Stylus.

Keep in mind that if you try this for the pink stylus since they no longer offer it, they do have a record of when you actually registered the game to get it.

I realize that the hobby of COLLECTING anything to some of you must somehow be abhorent.

Just open your minds to the thought that some people like to do it and have a friggin right to do it. I'm sure even you LIKE to have original manuals with your games. If not, let me know what you want and I'll run around to all the Gamestops/EB's in the area looking for disc only games just for you.

Also, one time, in the "Tips & Tricks" magazine, they mentioned that they still had old Twisted Metal 2 promo comic books, there was 200 or less made. I wrote to them and asked for one.. imagine my suprise when one actually showed up.

A lot of companies are very nice regarding things, you've just got to e-mail them and see. I doubt the developers even see much e-mail regarding the game, positive e-mail anyway. I don't think (for most of us) that it's emailing them to get free stuff, it's just that we e-mail them our appreciation for the game and they offer more things. Some companies (mostly smaller ones) care.. huge ones like EA could probably care less.

/edit: I just noticed I have the same avatar as b3bop. I'll change mine.

I need a RE0 manual and my Sonic Collection Manual is all screwed up (multiples of some pages and over half of it missing... :?).

Everyone wants to be like b3

Didn't bother me even in the slightest. I've had that icon since before the incident.

I think he was just referring to the guy who said he was going to start contacting companies left and right for free stuff, regardless of actual need. If that's the case, I agree with him. If a bunch of little punks start calling these places and asking for this stuff just to have it, the companies won't be so nice in the future. I can see some incompetent 13 year old lurker from this site calling Capcom and demanding that every manual they have be shipped out to him for free.

Oh I see then. And totally agree with the point. Sorry in the cyber world things as you know can often times be taken out of context and the real meaning and intentions misconstrued. Ooops.

Yeah I wouldn't abuse it but if you are missing a manual - maybe even the cover art, I don't know if they have that stocked too, it can't hurt on uncommon games to ask if they have them available. Some bad apple or two abusing that though and relisting the stuff on ebay or something...yeah, I can see how they would spoil the pot pretty quick.

The Fat Wallet crowd was really abusing Nintendo when they started the Zelda Collector's Disk promotion and the 2 or so ways you could get it free. There were people who ended up getting over 20 disks and selling them on ebay for over $50 each.

Yeah, I remember talk of stealing the registration codes from the display cases at Blockbuster to register for the disk.

Also, a lot of people called in and got another disk because of long ship times.

Is it any wonder we haven't seen another offer like this from Nintendo?

I emailed Capcom asking for a Manual for Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 for the PS2 since I bought the game used and without the manual, and gave up on looking for it some time ago. I got a reply saying that it had been sent to my house. I didn't know they had such great customer service, Thanks OP. THis almost makes me feel bad about playing KOF instead of Street Fighter.
