fuck that. if I wanted tivo, I would buy it. if I wanted a dvd burner, I would buy it. fuck sony, I wont be buying a ps3. Xbox sure as hell better not be taking this route.
 
to be honest, whatever the hell nintendo is up to with thier revolution and the idea of keeping the cube around much longer than we thought... i think thier doing something right.
$500 is a bit nuts, and creating multiple versions of the console at once is damn confusing to consumers (PSX/PS2 - Panasonic Q -GC)
 
ive supported sony the past 2 gens, but i wont buy their console until it hits 200, no matter how long that takes.

looks like im going with nintendo next gen
 
im going nintendo...and collecting old xbox and gc titles...screw 500...thats insane...I barely got 300 to buy my xbox...no way in hell im coughing up another 200 to play "next gen" games
 
Never been a big fan of SONY but owning a PS2 has changed my opinion as I have not had as much fun playing games in a long time.

Where CAPCOM goes is where my dollars go(everyone else will follow)
 
didn't Sony say they're releasing one expensive ps3 with the tivo and everything, and another barebones ps3 that will be alot cheaper...

I won't pay more than $200 for any console, I'll be perfectly fine with my GCN and PS2 until the next gen consoles drop to $200.

I'm not a big fan of buying a console at launch anyways, the last one worth buying it at launch was the N64.
 
ive always waited til the prices drops to 200 or below to buy a system...then 150 or below for the following systems that i buy....it may take a year or 2 or whatever, but im actually looking forward to it, considering the amount of games that i need to play for my ps2, x, and gc
 
Theres no way sony could be so stupid as to release a $500 console. Look at the PSX and how well thats selling at $1000 or whatever its at now.
 
Thats crazy, It's getting to the point where only the rich and famous can afford consoles. Whatever happened to the days where anybody who wanted to play could. I miss those $100 NES Mario Duck Hunt sets with 2 controllers!
 
I decided that $300 is the max Ill pay for a console, while $150 is the max Ill pay for a handheld. Sony is insane if they think the PS3 will sell as well as the PS2 if its released at $500 unless they are able to hype it even more then the PS2.
 
I'm telling you. Sony is setting themselves up for a huge fall. No company has been on top for more than two console generations. I believe that Microsoft, with their unbelievably deep pockets, will take the next round. Or at least be a close competitor. I believe Nintendo will remain, because their niche of the market will always be there. I doubt they will take the number one spot again, but I don't think they are going to go the Sega route.

Nintendo is too proud to go the Sega route, they'd go bankrupt before they did that. Nintendo's "vision/arrogance" will either propel them to the top or sink them to the bottom. They stayed somewhere in the middle this generation, if Sony and MS come out strong next gen, Nintendo could be in for a rude awakening.
 
Damn, I can't believe this shit. I've always been the person to get something real big on release (PS2, Xbox, GBA SP), but this may be the first time I don't if it really is that much. I really hope Microsoft doesn't charge as much as Sony. But I could definitey live off PS2, GCN, XB, and GBA games I haven't bought yet for a year.

That's why I said "I don't think they are going to go the Sega route". My god. Can you read? I think there is room for 3 in the console game, and I believe Nintendo will always be a health 3rd. They have too many people hooked on their games, they release with a low price point, and they will always have the GB to keep them afloat. And yes, yes, I know the PSP is cool, but it is also going to be expensive. Yes, I know the price isn't released, but it is sure as hell going to be more expensive than the DS or whatever Nintendo comes out with. And there are always the people who want the cheaper thing, just as there are always people who want the more technically impressive thing.

That's why I support Nintendo. The reason I purchase a system is to, surprise, play videogames. Having some online capabilities is OK, but developing a plan around online i believe is only going to decrease the quality of videogames. Sony and Microsoft are trying to build these mini-home entertainment centers which are beginning to resemble high-end PC's. Like Nick said, if I wanted the features they're trying to sell, I'd buy their respective products.
 
I may be a cheapass when it comes to games, but I'm willing to pay tons for the hardware that plays them. If the higer-end PS3 deputs at $1000, I'll buy it. I have no idea why I'm like that, but I am.

However, I REALLY doubt that Sony will only offer a console that expensive. If they do have a model with extra features, there will almost definately be a lower-end one that cost much less.
 
Im a loyal Nintendo person because they've always been around to me. Nintendo means fun and good times. Xbox means violence and cool ideas. PS2 means crap mixed with weird.

I own all 3 systems for very specific games. Xbox for the sega exclusives, PS2 for the platformers and gamecube for the weird fun titles and Nintendo products.
 
if this happens, I hope MS and nintendo capitalize off of it. I doubt a bad price point would kill the PS3, but it certainly won't help.
 
This sounds like a lot of panic to me. As it was already pointed out, its unlikely the "games only" ver of the PS3 would go for $500. Sony has displayed a lot of cockiness since becoming king of the hill, but never sheer stupidity.

However, even if it were $500, I would consider buying it at that price. The playstation has yet to let me down, and as long as I see good games ahead that I want to play on that system, chances are I'll lay down the cash.

After the last generation I ended up owning 8 n64 games and 30something PSX games. From this generation I currently own 7 gamecube games, 9 xbox games, and 67 playstation 2 games. And I don't just buy games because they're cheap, I weigh my purchase decisions very carefully. I only buy games I strongly think I'm going to like, and I only keep the ones that lived up to that.

Over the years it has become clear to me which company is employing the superior strategy and philosophy when it comes to publishing games for their system.

Bottomline : I go where the good games are, and for the last 7 years that's Sony. $500? So be it.

The graphics are crap. still. those F'ing jaggies have permanently f'd with my vision. Also, there is an absolutely insane amount of shitty games out on that console. I actually kept up with the ps2 when i didnt own one just because. i am not saying the xbox is any better, but there is just so much more crap that when you add in the shit graphics and the annoying posts about DRE's it makes it look like "crap". The weird is for neat games like Cookie and Cream, Rez, and all those fun import WTF titles.

Theyll have to pull an N-gage and drop the price dramatically and push out rebates and free games to bounce back
 
This could be Nintendo's big chance to make a comeback... not that I care really. As a lifetime Nintendo product supporter, I prefer lower prices on their games (like right now), as long as they're still in the market.
 
Well this has quickly turned into a 5th grade, my system is better than yours, pissing contest. I own a PS2 because it gets a lot of good exclusive titles, but personally I do dislike Sony. They have one good first party game and they release faulty hardware. I have never had a problem with any system except for my former PS and my current PS2. That being said, I will continue to buy their console as long as game developers release only for them. Its actually quite the nice little cycle. Developers release only for Sony, Sony sells more consoles, Developers follow the dollar and go where the customers are and produce only for Sony,etc. This is called a network externality. I learned this in my intro to management class.
Learning is FUN-damental.
 
If the construction quality of the PS3 is like the PS2, the higher price point may destroy their SOFTWARE sales will suck because people will be less willing to buy a replacement after their console breaks down.

Hell, this time they had a tough time keeping the DVD functionality working, much less a dvd burner (taxing the laser, anyone?) and a DVR. I plan to wait it out for a year or so, to see how their systems hold up next gen. If it were Nintendo that put out a crazy featured console and charged $500 I'd buy it at launch because 1) TiVo is the SHIT 2) TiVo with a DVD burner is even better and 3) I'd be assured that I was getting a dependable product, looking at Nintendo's track record.
 
I'm in the same boat as some of you people who intend to buy the Nintendo console when it hits the gates. Mainly because you can always count on Nintendo to have great first-party games and generally good launch games (Except for the N64).

But I'm hoping that the next Nintendo console will be basically a game machine that can play DVDs and CDs. I really like how the price of the Gamecube has always been a lot lower than its competitors. To me, that is very important.
 
Technically, this belongs in another topic, but i'll make the segway in the end. What's interesting is what Nintendo has said about their next console. They've basicly said that it's almost impossible to dramatically increase visual power of games. Look at the jump from the N64 to the Cube. I agree that i don't think that a jump like that can happen again. They seem to want to improve the hardware they have instead of reinventing it. Now the segway. Sony plans on modifying and changing it's hardware into the PS3. If Nintendo is correct (and it does make logical sense) then won't Sony be shooting itself in the foot by making a difficult to program for piece of hardware? Maybe they don't care b/c they're aiming for the whole 'midpiece of the household' market, but for gamers this should be a viable concern.
 
My prediction is:
2005 - Microsoft system $300 / Nintendo System $200 / Sony no system.
2006 - MS - $200 / Nintendo $150 / Sony $300

That's my guess it will be interesting to see what the consumer purchases. If they price the systems as I guess Sony may be in a bad position out of the gate.

A lot will depend on who has the best games and how many games are delivered over that time frame.

You might be one of the few. I'm on my 3rd PS2. I'm yet to have problems with my GC and Xbox. As far as games go though, every system will have something that I'll like. I'll probably be getting all of them, but I won't be making a line at my local Target to get it at launch like I did with the PS2 if the price is $500.
 
If consoles raise in price that much, I'll just stick with PC gaming. I have all 3 consoles, but shaq-fu them if they want me to shell out 500$ for a console. I will definitely stick to my alienware laptop and use emulation if I have to. I bought all 3 console games on release day, and like the current ones I have. Though, now that I think about it, they were rather expensive at launch.
