It doesn't suck by any stretch, but to be rather honest, its hype really exceeds the quality of the game. It's one of the best pre-Metroidvania games in the series, and would be the best if not for Super CVIV. The SNES game's control really shines compared to the NES games, and it makes Rondo seem a lil' archaic by comparison. On the plus side, it is a phenomenal game, with tons of hidden passages, extra bosses, alternate exits, and things like that that give it a great deal of replay value (it's less linear than most of the early games, save for Dracula's Curse).
I think finally being able to play the game will be a reality check for American gamers - think of the hype surrounding Final Fantasy III DS compared to the attitude towards the game before a DS version was announced or in development. Now that the game's out in the US, it's great, and a fun game to play. No doubt about that. However, a lot of the romanticism for the game died pretty quickly, once people realized that they're playing a 15 year old RPG that's been virtually untouched, save for a fancy new coat of paint. I think the same can be said for Final Fantasy V and the FF Anthology (or was it Chronicles?) on the PSX. Ubernerds held out such a hardon for those two FF games...and now V is not only not romanticized, its probably regarded as one of the least liked FF games (I think it's damned fine, but it ain't no 4 or 6).
Rondo of Blood will be a treat to play, but we'll see how this title is perceived in 5-6 years, and if people even remember the 14 years of forum posts, rumors and anticipation to play this in the US. My guess is that it will be quickly forgotten, just like FFIII and V.
All that said, the remix of the game sounds amazing, and the animation on Richter looks top-

in-notch. It gave me that feeling that the old prince of persia/flashback style of platformers, which gave an unparalleled amount of animation to the main character. The new 1st level looks very different from the PC Engine version, and showed a lot of areas and bosses I don't remember seeing at all. And, it also lacked the "crazed zombie bull thing" that chases you from left to right through level 1. It's too early to call it an incomplete remake, though.
What would be awesome if the 2.5D remake was actually a twist on the old game... it would give me a reason to play both the original port, and then this new 2.5D version. At first I thought it was going to be just a graphical facelift, but if the game itself is significantly different, than that's 3 games in one package pretty much.
The Saturn version of SotN would seal the deal.
And who the hell is saying Final Fantasy V is one of the least liked FF games? It's a damn fine game... it's one of my favorite FF's. I don't ever see it getting bashed.
I just wanted to add I love the age we're leaving in now... we've got the proper MSX ports of Metal Gear 1 and 2, Final Fantasy 3, and now Rondo of Blood... all we need now is for Square Enix to translate the missing Dragon Quest games for us
