Cell phone plans

I never had a cell phone (yes I know...), but decided I'd finally give in and get one. I use my home phone to call people, and I'm pretty much always out with friends so I just use their cell phones if I need to make a call. I've been putting this off long enough, and figured it is good to always have a phone on me in case of emergency. The thing is, I know those plans can be real expensive, and I know people who spend well over $50 each month on these things. I tried to research various costs, but I'm sorta clueless with these things. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get the cheapest price? I was recommended a pay-as-you-go sorta phone, but are they really cost effective? I figure you guys know a whole lot more than I do about these things and maybe someone can offer me advice so I don't get fucked by some salesman when I go to buy one.

Thanks,
THPS

they both have pros and cons

Pay as you go/pre pay, you just pay for whatever set amount of minutes but the catch is that it only last 3 months for the smallest amount or shorter ...depends on who you get it from.

Contracts, if you buy a phone and sign a two year contract and that phone turns into a lemon after the 15 day trial, your SOL for the next two years.

It depends on service in your area.. some places, Verizon is great, other places Sprint is better and so on. You best to do research via the providers web site and go from there.

For me I have been with Verizon for 3 years... Have had three cells during this time period.. (3 contracts) My first phone was good, my second phone had all these neat Multimedia features including speaker phone, but would crap out (drop calls), the 3rd phone which i got 2 weeks ago is AMAZING.. it has better reception then my first 2 phones, get signals where the others wouldn't, speaker phone, mp3 playback memory card storage, video recording, voice menu navagation, voice GPS!!!

its the LG 8300 btw as suggested by fellow caggers here over the chocolate :)

if you go with a contract, see what offers the best time for you for the unlimited nights and weekends......... for me I have a 300 minute plan for 35 bucks+tax with UNW.......I barely use my day time minutes (the highest I gotten was about 176minutes thats becaues I was in NYC for winter break) but my night time minutes get up to the hundreds!)

you might want to start with a simple plan and WATCH YOUR MINUTES (you can check your minutes) if you feel that you have nearly used up all your minutes you might want to switch to a higher plan... if you go over those set minutes, be prepared to pay a lot..also txting and pictures messages add up to.

If you work for a major corp, see if they have a relationship with providers...my wife works for bank of america, and I am getting the lgx8300 for $20, no activation fee, no shipping charges, and 20% off the monthly service plan.

that one is new to me

thx[/QUOTE]

no problem, they are really helpful..just don't ask them on how to back up demo programs or to unlock them so you get them for free because they will delete/lock/ban you.

Thank you for all the input. I'm self-employed, so there's no way for me to get any discounts that way. Thanks for the links as well, they have really good info. I'll have to ask around locally to see which provider has the best service and then I'll go from there. I feel like such a loser not having a cell and all, I could never justify shelling out all that money each month but now I'm starting to see why it would come in handy.

Thanks again,

good luck, I have had nextel for a couple of years, and sprint before that. I left sprint due to there service going on the downside, and then they merged/bought nextel. I am switching to verizon tonight. The cool thing about sprint/nextel was the free incoming minutes. But most of my friends/family have verizon wireless and you get free minutes calling them on there cell.

yea but you have to pay extra for that..... not much but didn't verizon had unlimited in for free long ago?

dude don't give into peer pressure just because everyone else has a cell... Its like ipods.. . I know boat loads of people who have ipods..but do I have one? Nope.. Don't need to carry around a 300 dollar hard drive like that to feel part of the crowd.

Remember the cell has its ups and downs...... I would be careful of who you give your number to... Its best to give that number to your employeer but never answer the phone if its them OR if its a number you don't know..that way you can screen them via voice mail. Would suck if your out on a date and your boss calls to make you come into work... i'd say fuck that and ignore him.

I don't think you do at this time...

Unlimited IN Calling AND Night & Weekend Minutes

I have Cingular and I'm very happy. Service is good, my phone is awesome, and the plan is pretty badass. 450 anytime minutes, unlimited night and weekends, and 200 texts for like 55-60 bucks. (roll-over minutes are badass as well).
