Cheap Console Renting/Leasing?

jmiller80

CAGiversary!
Instead of shelling out the cash to buy a system that could brick in the next year, would you be willing to rent / lease your console? How cheap would it have to be (monthly)? Think tiered pricing for the individual consoles and a better bundle price for all three.

With this arrangement, you wouldn't have to worry about standing in launch lines, ridiculous bundles, warranties, and mid-stream console upgrades. If the system bricks, just ship it back and the leasing company would deal with the brick and ship you a new one upon receipt.

I had this idea after reading some forum posts today. Does anyone offer this service already? I noticed a lukewarm deal with Bell Canada and MS, but I'm thinking of something like Gamefly for consoles.

I dont think anyone rents systems anymore except like furniture type rental stores. No video game stores that Im aware of do that anymore. As far as leasing, the amount most charge would eventually cost more than the actual system.

i know rent a center used to rent out systems. Funny thing is i remember the N64 they rented for like 19.99 per week and the total cost was like 768 bucks for a 200 buck system.

even if someplace did this expect the final cost to be 3 to 5 x what it would cost you to buy outright. If your looking for a short term lease check out your local video stores. I know the one here is renting xbox 360 for a week for 15 bucks or 50 per month. You will never own it though

I figured as much on those local rental places. Mostly preying on the cash-strapped. I'm thinking of something that might appeal to CAGs.

Would rental be at all appealing to you at the following prices (warranty and any upgrades inclusive)?

Wii: $20/mo
360 Premium: $20/mo
PS3 60Gb: $40/mo
All three: $70/mo

Or would you still prefer to own the console?

Leasing or renting is just a bad idea, especially for a relatively low-priced item like a game console (compared to say, a car).

Rather than leasing, I'd just start saving up that $20 or $40 a month in a savings account, collect my .000001% interest, and own the system right out when I get. That way, if I want to upgrade or get rid of it later, I can sell it and be out far less money.

While not something I would do myself, I work at Blockbuster and definitely know a few people that this would appeal to. I think it's a good idea, but whoever actually rented out the systems would have to find some good collateral or something cause I'm sure you'd get people trying to rip you off one way or another. Just something to think about.

blockbuster did this shit and you'd have to leave like a check for the full retail price if not even more. it was a total rip off and I think thats why people never do it anymore :/

I would never rent a console, but why would ps3 cost 2x as much as Wii and 360. I could see maybe $10 more at 50% higher, but not double the price of a 360.

Yeah, I remember my mom renting the SNES (from, of all places, the local grocery store) for me when I was a kid, and she had to give them a check for $20 more than MSRP, which she got back when she returned the system. I can't even remember why she rented it for me, since she bought me a SNES a few months later for Christmas. Maybe she wanted to be sure I'd like it or something.

I wouldn't be too much of a big fan of that. Once you buy a console, it's yours. Your one 400 dollar payment and no more. You have the hardware. If you were to rent it for around 30 dollars a month then yeah you'd be saving money, but at the end of the gen you'd be at a big loss. It's just like renting an apartment for a long period of time. I've lived in an apartment with my mom for coming 6 years now and we've paid 1100 a month. 6x12= 72. 72x1100=79,200 dollars. We would have been almost done with that house by now.

Would you rent the games too? That'd be extra money. Buying the games would just be stupid. You can't rent a console forever. Renting it would just take away money that you should just save up for it.

Haha, I remember renting a Nintendo 64 from Blockbuster when I was younger, it's a good idea to check the system out before you purchase one.

$20.00 to test out the Wii for a month would be awesome, but since I already own one... I guess PS3 for $40.00?

I would do it, but only for a month.

more like 40 for the WII and 80 for the ps3. they wouldnt take 14 months to make their money back on the Ps3.

I consider myself having rented 3 Xboxes from Best Buy. My first one was the first thing I ever bought an extended warranty on and I'm glad that I did. None of them have made it 2 years. I call them up, send it back, and get my money back. The one I have right now is having problems reading games and the disk tray doesn't want to open about 50% of the time.

I'm thinking it is time to try a 360.

I remember renting the Super Nintendo when I was a kid. My mom rented it for two weeks, and then for that christmas I got it. :)

Renting can be good if you use it to see if you like a system but any long term renting is just a waste of money. One week to one month is a good rental period to appraise it though.

not a good business model.

people will just abuse the systems because they dont own them.

plus i like owning mine. i have all my old systems back to the atari 5400.

nothing like playing a little pac man once in awhile.

fuck yeah man, just like renting games, I rented lego starwars ll on 360 and the copy was so badly beat up it wouldnt even load... then the copy of project 8 I got after that was pretty much the same, so I just got credit on my account :/

wasn't atari pac-man hands down the worst version of pac-man ever though? wikipedia lists as a catalyst for the ruin of Atari...and judging from screens..Intellivision and NES handle the game a lot better

you can compare for yourself here
http://www.mobygames.com/game/pac-man/screenshots

but yea the 5200 wasnt the greatest system. the 2600 was actually better as far as games.

i got the 5200 at a yard sale tho lol and it came w/ like 10 games so i wasnt gunna complain. beggers cant be choosers & i didnt have much money as a kid.

i did manage to pick up a 2600 w/ about 40 games for $20 when i was 22 at an antique shop near a popular torist area in maine. came w/ the sports controllers as well as joysticks. glad i still have the coax adapter for it. otherwise there would be no way to play it.

You're thinking of the 2600 version.

Yes, obviously. I was only stating the figures that jmiller80 originally asked about.
