I need a router for my PS2/Xbox. It can be cheapie as long as it works reliably. I'm already having problems logging onto XBL, and I don't want anymore headaches. Also, where is a good place to get a 100 ft. Ethernet cable?

Deep Surplus is a great place to buy cables, but they have a $12 minimum order. The good thing is they don't try to rip you off on shipping, and only charge the real shipping price (which should be around $5-8).
Edit: They also give you a free bag of candy with each order.

you can get cable at lowes for like 7 cents a foot and put some rj-45's on the end's with a crimper.... that would be the cheapest way to go.... or you could go wirless and cancel out the cables all together

Free candy? I'm all over it.

Well, how much are you looking to spend? I mean like whats your price range, of course cheaper is better but you also want some quality. I personally like Linksys best but thats just my opinion

you can look for a refurbished router online...there are bunches of sites with these

i got mine using a MIR...in the end i paid $9 for a four port wired dlink router...it works great on XBL...I think it is a DI-604 or something like that.

I have a DI-604, and it's fantastic. I use it with my computer, my roommate's computer, and my PS2. D-Link makes very good networking products. I got mine from NewEgg.com; I'd recommend checking them out.

I just got the DI-604, and it's awesome. It has 4 ports, so I'm going to use it to network between my Xbox/PS2/Computer/Laptop. I got it off eBay refurbished from TigerDirect for about 25 bucks shipped. I saw another D-Link router at Best Buy last night, it was 30 bucks. It had 5 ports, too.

So how about we just talk "Best" router instead of cheap? I need to replace my 6 year old Netgear because it can't hang with my PS2.

I would like to buy a $150 D-Link Gamer router, but that is WAY to much to spend -- so at this point I would like to get recommendations on the best router for use with the PS2, on Comcast broadband, that is not necessarily cheap, but is definitely good.

As far as I prices, I am good at digging up cheap, cheap, cheap, usually on ebay.

I got my netgear router(4 ports) for 9.99 on ebay, works perfect with my xbox,pc,ps2, and really cheap and easy to set up AND I got my 100 ft ethernet cord off of ebay for 8.99(buy now)+8.50 shipping

15 bucks, can't beat that. I've had the same router for about 3 years now, works like a champ. I've got all (had the GCN on it, but I don't play PSO anymore) my consoles connected to it (Xbox/PS2) and two PC's (roomates PC, and mine). Port forwarding is a breeze with this router, also has all the major functions of routers triple it's price has. Tiger Direct shipps pretty damn good, I had 5 day shipping, but came in 2.

Wow -- that is a damn fine price. Does Tiger Direct have a good rep?

That's where I got my router from (same one actually), and i've also ordered some other crap (memory ect.) and everything came fast and as it should.

Home Depot, 100 Ft of cable=14.99, you will have to put
the jacks on both ends and it comes with the tool to do it,as
far as the router goes buy a D-link,i have the DI-624 we have 2
Xboxes hooked up to it and 2 PC's and this thing never gives us any problems!!

i have an extra one lying around my house.. i can probably get rid of it if you are interested its a D-link.. its not wireless or anything.. it has 4 ins.. i know this isn't a solicitation thread.. but if all else fails.. go with a Linksys wireless G router from wal mart for not more than 50 bucks

sorry for the double post...

but you should call you're provider before purchasing a router so everything is peachy before setting up... (just from experience..)

i really don't think you need a 150 "gamer" router.. i mean.. i run wireless linksys router with the wireless adapter for the xbox and i run 3 land lines to it and two more wireless computers to it.. and the best part about linksys (or d-link) is there are a MILLION FAQ pages on the internet to tell you how to set it up perfectly.. for anything you are using it for..

if you are just sharing between consoles and 1-2 PCs.. then i would suggest a cheaper router.. because XBL will pick up a connection through a firewall and (i assume a PS2 would with the right wireless adapter) so you'd only have to worry about port forwarding for you're PC gaming (if you even play PC online..)..

if you have a Frys around you, they usually run cheap deals on routers and wireless card by Airlink

My provider is Comcast, and they suck. I have already tried talking with them, and they just give me the "we don't support that speech."

Back when I was trying to Beta-Test Project SnowBlind, they were totally worthless, and practically jerks, sharing no info about ports and configurations, and could have cared less that I was trying to debug... "we don't support that..." again.

I have actually been looking at the D-Link DI-604 for a couple of weeks now, but with the Tiger deal, I think my mind is made up.

Well, a new DI-604 router and new Comcast cable modem later...

... and everything is like butter.

Moral of the story, don't be afraid to replace networking hardware when your connectivity sucks.

Still wish Sony had a consistant middle-ware...

I got 100ft of cat5e cable with connectors on ebay for $10 shipped, you might want to check there. Also, stay away from belkin routers, they're nothing but trouble. I bought a wireless one, and the connection kept getting lost, even though i had my xbox connected through wires. I switched back to my wired linksys router, and the problem was fixed.
