Anyone know a cheap and reliable web hosting company?

Early this year someone on here told me about prolinkhosting.com which i have been using since January.

9.XX a year

I had absolutely no probs with them but now my site went down and they arent responding to my emails. Its been more than a week.

Are there any other companies out there in the same price range?

$9 a year was pretty bad ass

There was some big hosting site that had some $9 for the first year promotion, but I can't remember the name (wasn't your current one).

I'm not sure you'll be able to find a reliable host for $9 a year (as you've experienced). Cheapest ones I can think off the top of my head are NearlyFreeSpeech and A Small Orange. Never used NFS but I've heard good things about them. I used to use ASO but their reliable started to dive a bit for my tastes.
1&1 is pretty good, prices are reasonable... Under $5 a month I believe is their cheapest plan...
I have been using 1&1 for a few years now and they have always been great.

You could get your domain from numerous places from 1.99 to 10$ for a year and use dyndns.com to redirect the name to your own PC, even with your IP address able to change by RoadRunner/Comcast etc. This way it is as reliable as you are willing to make it and you can have Linux/Windows/Mac web hosting with what ever web programming language you wish. Since it isn't to important me other than playing purposes I have my router auto update my IP with DynDNS and can hit my web server to test whatever I need testing useing a DNS Name over remembering my IP address.

One thing I can tell you, don't use urlfreedom.com or anything connected to the free sites. (Domain Lagoon, Hosting Lagoon, etc.) They provide decent hosting, and it's a great deal if you do the offers, but they have the WORST support ever. My site has been down for a week with no explanation. Can't even log into my FTP account.

And I've always wanted to host my website at home, as I have a PC that is always on, but I have a dynamic IP address. It's too hard to re-reroute my domain name every few days. Anybody know a tool that will keep it the same? (I have AT&T.)

hosting at home is an interesting idea.. so it would not work with a dynamic ip? I have comcast..

what would i need to get it started?

It will work with a dynamic IP. Just use http://www.dyndns.com/, you can use one their "Free" Domain Names or get them to use the One you buy from where ever. Then use either a program, yout router(if supported), or log into DynDNS from the host computer routinely to "renew" with them you are still a live account with whatever the latest IP is. My ISP seldom renews IPs but I have my router re up my ip with dyndns once a month.

do you have to transfer your domain.?

seems like I have a lot of reading to do.. i have my domain with godaddy.. would i then change my dns addresses with them to point to the one i set up at dyndns?

Just download an an apache program.... create the web page in this case you have it done already, then route the ip with the dynodns program....

Dude go with hostgator. They are a rwally reliable company that has been around for a long time. They have pretty close to the same price as whoever you got it form at 9.99 a year except they are a more reputable name. No1 has ever heard of prolink.com or whatever.

Comcast doesn't like people doing that. I wouldn't recommend it.

Yeah, but screw Comcast. We can do whatever we want with our PCs and the service we pay for.

BTW- Thanks for the hostgator site. I'm looking into that.

Not when you sign a legally-binding user agreement contract that specifically says what you can and can not do with their service.
