I've got all of the games I'm interested in playing, so I just need a system. Cheapest I've found is 14.99 online at GameStop (with free shipping). Any advice? And do any cartridges save without needing the memory card?

You might get lucky and find a complete system for $9.99 used at a sale or thrift store, but $15 used isn't a bad price to pay for it at all. (You'll want to get one that includes the optional memory Expansion Pak already installed at no extra charge; however, you'll probably have to visit a physical store to ensure that you get this.)

Depends on the games, almost if not all Nintendo games don't need a memory card. But most third party titles need a memory card(the Turok games take a huge amount of pages).

Don't they usually look for and remove the expansion pack? That would be sweet if I could find an N64 that had one.

Well, for now I'm only playing Paper Mario, Mario 64, Mario Tennis, Mario Kart and Zelda Majora's Mask. Sounds like I should be ok ... do any of those need the expansion pack?

$15 isn't too bad.

After getting all those used $5 games at Gamecrazy, I might pick up an extra N64 system. I don't want to contaminate my original pristine N64 by playing those used games on it.

My original NES was ruined thanks to some grimy used games (Russian Attack, amongst others) that I bought from Gamecrazy.

I think mainly Conker, Perfect Dark, Turok, DK64 needs the expansion pack.

Majora's Mask requires the expansion pak to play.

Also, Sabin, that's why you clean the games before playing them. It's almost a given that unless you clean your N64 games, you're going to get a black screen when you turn the system on.

I picked up one of the green N64s (with the expansion pack!) from Gamerush last fall for $20. I would have passed, but 1)it was green, 2)it had the expansion pack, and 3)it was MINT- there was absolutely no dust, marks, stickers, etc. on it.

No, most stores don't bother removing Expansion Paks from used N64 systems because they would have to replace them with the original Jumper Paks the previous owners removed. (Most of the time, the owners simply throw this away, and the system won't work without one or the other installed. As a result, the only time stores get used Expansion Paks in trade is when the owner saved the old Jumper Pak, swaps it out in his/her system and trades the Expansion Pak in separately.)
Is there a way to tell if the system has the expansion pack?
Just open up the expansion port cover on the top of the unit. If the cartridge has a red top, you have the expansion pak.

Awesome, thanks for the info. I'm a N64 n00b and you've helped me out a ton.

If it's one of the colored ones, you would see it in the expansion bay, since it's see-through. Which if it's a Nintendo expansion pak, it has a red top to it. But if it's one of the regular N64s, you have to open the expansion bay cover to see.

Heh thats exactly what I did when I found a green one with expansion at a gamestop a year ago. That and I was in the market for one kinda cause my other one had a really shitty connector.

What's the best way to clean games?

To the OP and anyone else wondering:

Get first party memory cards only! Do not buy third party memory cards. Nintendo brand only!

That will save you a lot of grief...

Yeah, I learned that the hard way with my Gamecube, although luckily the third party one I bought crapped out on the first save.

Anyway, thanks for the advice everyone. I went to GameStop and found out that they were 19.99 in-store, and none had memory expansions already in them. I then went to EBGames, and they had them for 17.99 and one with a memory expansion. I've now joined the "64"-bit era!
congrats

I have three games and no system =P
Same situation here ... I bought some N64 Gamecrazy games that I was interested in (as I'm sure you did too) and needed the "N64" part.

just by reading this post it makes me want to get a n64. $15 is not bad for one though. i just wished i didnt sit the gamecrazy deal out. o well...i still have the n64 games i want to play. does the n64 from gamestop.com comoe with any warranty?

I ordered an N64 from Ebgames.com a whule back for 25 bucks, I was all pissed cuz it was sticky and the controller was too (nothing a little goo-gone and a cotton swab can't handle), but than my anger went away when I found out it had an expansion pak in it.

Goodwill stores routinely sell used N64s for under $10...I see them all of the time. I've got three of them for a total of $20 and no tax. One even came with the expansion pack and Donkey Kong 64 for $4.99!!

ya, i want to pick up a N64 now too. especially with the game crazy sale going on. i already picked up a few N64 games....just need the system.

I don't think Major's Mask "needs" it. I think it just makes the graphics a little better.
