cheapest price for a 60 gig playstation 3 NEW

My advice is buy it from a place like Costco that sells it for retail but includes a lifetime warrenty for free.

I don't trust Sony's hardware in the slightest after how many PS2s I went through.

You also might want to consider just waiting. Word is Sony is going to make a new model ps3 and it will retail for $499.99. They have already done away with the 20gb and the current 60gb will probably not be made after this fall either. The only thing you'd be missing out with the new model as opposed to the current 60gb is backwards compatibility, which Sony is going to scrap to save costs.

If you apply for a Sony Card, on their site they will give you $100.00 off of your first purchase. Then the gamble begins, will there really be a price drop? (I believe so) When and how much? (Everyone is just guessing when they tell you what's going to happen in the future, price drop, stripped machine, etc.) So do you take the for sure $100.00 or wait? You have to apply before the end of the month and use the card before the end of August, I believe the fine print goes. Me...I'll apply for the card and wait until the last minute. There have already been a few deals where you can get $50.00 off if you buy the system and a couple of games. Add that and now you have a $150.00 discount. And I would expect the deals will only get sweeter as more time passes.

I completely agree with my man here.
I went through about 4 ps2's untill they finally remodeled and released the PS2 Slim Version. Sony just makes cheap shitty hardware. I seriously dont trust them. I've had my xbox since Halo 1 came out and man that thing has been to a lot of LAN partys and it still works fine. Not saying I favor it, but as hardware goes I have to say I do.

If you have a Meijer nearby, wait until they run the 20% off anything deal. They have them every now and then. And sometimes you can get 10% off with a new CC, meaning 30% off the PS3 would be oh-so-nice.

I'm always tempted to take this route, especially because the local Meijer always has PS3's available when they run the deal.

In all fairness, isn't the stripped machine already a reality in Europe? It seems only logical that they'd bring it here as well.

While it is a reality there, we have a different market here. I would expect that as time passes a new machine will show up. It happened with the PS/2 and will happen with the PS/3 as well. I was referring to the comment that there would be a $200.00 price drop with the introduction of a stripped model. I took the comment that it was in the works. I would be willing to wager that a price drop will occur, but with the current machine, with a possibly larger harddrive, before a stripped down model is offered. There are a few titles on the horizon that will increase sales a bit before Christmas, Ratchet and Clank, Killzone, etc. If more games are available, then the price drop I don't believe will be as dramatic as the one suggested above. I currently have 2 wagers that a price drop will occur before Christmas, either real dollars, or free games/movies. Waiting can certainly be a benefit as lower prices will occur, EVERY system ever released to my knowledge has had huge discounts in it's lifecycle. But then the question becomes, how long are you willing to wait, and do you really want a stripped machine? For me I would rather spend a little more than get a stripped machine. I have a really nice home theatre system and am pissed that Microsoft did not include enough backwards compatibility in the 360. I love being a gamer, and look forward to any solution that benefits us, the consumer.
The PS3 has a much better track record than the 360 and the wii so far.
Yea, seems Sony and MS switch places with each other this generation. Now the xbox came out first and is having hardware failures, while the PS3 came out a year later and hardware failure is a moot issue for them. Also seems it's now popular to bash the PS3 while last generation it was the xbox that got heat for only having one AAA title for the first two years.

My advice, is wait till there is that one title you want, for me that is MGS4 and I won't get a PS3 until that game comes out. If there is a price drop by than, good for me, if not oh well. Since I doubt there will be any price drops this year, maybe Spring of 08.
I had my PS2 since launch and it runs perfect.
You have to be in the minority. I had mine since launch and have been through three systems. Disk read errors EVERY time. I even bought a slim PS2 from Target and it was broke out of the box. But than I guess I have bad luck. I bought an xbox 360 and had to return it after a week. grrrrr

I've had my PS2 since launch day...no problems. I've had a couple of different PS1's over the years, but I've just bought and sold them...never had one crap out.

I've got other Sony stuff and I've never had problems with any of it. I've had a 5 disc Sony CD changer for about 15 years and it works just like the day I bought it.

Sony may have some problems, but I've never seen them. On the other hand, there is a lot to be said for how people handle their equipment. If you've gone through 3-4 of any one system, you really need to consider not treating your equipment like crap.

I only had one PS2 DRE on me and that was a launch system, got it repair and it started doing it again about a year later. Did buy other PS2, had no problems with them though, but that may have been cause I sold them in under a year of ownership.

I have a launch PS2, and the only time I've seen DREs are on really crappy rental DVDs.

My XBOX, on the other hand, needed its DVD drive replaced and now it needs it's power thingy (not the supply, but the supply regulator) replaced. I still get DREs about half the time when I put a disc in, but once the game actually loads it's fine. The XBOX is easily my most problematic console ever.

I'm waiting for the 360s with the new chips before I get really serious about trying to get a 360.

Um, I think you know this is not about that. Some people get crappy machines, sometimes more than once. Despite the fact that I have a great PS2, it's well known that some of them had major problems. And, if you're buying at a point in time when there are manufacturing problems, it means that the odds of getting a bad one are high for replacements, too.

Hmmmm I have to add that I have a launch PS2 as well and I've never gotten a read error. Two of my friends also have launch PS2's and none of theirs have problems either.

For the people who have gone through 4-6 PS2's, how well do you take care of your stuff? Do you have small children that run around bouncing it like a basketball or something?

I'll go ahead and put in my two cents:

I also have a launch PS2 that hasn't once given out on me. I don't think I've even gotten a single disc read error yet, and I have been playing this machine for more than 6 years.

But then again, I try to take exceptionally good care of my gaming stuff, and I like to think I've succeeded.

My ps2 track record:

#1:
dropped about 3 feet and stopped working (still under warrenty woot!)

#2:
DRE (fat model still) -- fixed myself for a while but it became too much

#3:
DRE (fat model still) -- fixed myself but got to a point where half o the games would work almost perfect and half of them would not.

#4:
Still own (slim model) -- I modded it to play Japanese games yay!

#5:
Returned within 30 days (silver slim model) -- poor compatibility with older games, major WTF @ Sony.
NewEgg has a promotion where you buy a 1080p tv and you get a free 60 gig ps3.
It isn't free, They just took a $1500 HDTV And a PS3, And are asking $2100.

I second this idea, if you don't have to have it NOW then wait and you can find a deal like this. My buddy bought a PS3 during the last Meijer deal and went back a couple times with more coupons and got a game and a controller for 20% off. Only one discount per receipt but for $480 its hard to beat.
If you do have to have it now get it from Amazon and save the tax.

I got brand new PS3 for about 270 something or around that ^__^ Now take that !

I just bought a PS3 at Gamestop this weekend, since they were offering a free SIXAXIS with console purchase.

It still cost $600, but the effective price was only $550 (since I was going to buy the extra controller anyway.) I put the deal in the main forum....but I guess most people didn't see it.
