Received my Children of Mana DS game from play-asia yesterday. I've put in a couple of hours and for what it is, im enjoying it.

Of course, not actually knowing Japanese ive had a few problems, but so far i've figured out the basics from the menus to buying side-quests.

As of right now, I'm a bit stuck after beating the first level, I'm not sure how to even get to #2. The side-quests have taken up some time, so it hasnt killed the game for me.

Anyways, I figured people could post questions, comments, or what the hell those gems do.

I'm glad to see that I wasn't the only one incapable of passing this up for 20 bucks! :) My copy came in 2 days ago, but I'm at approximately the same place as you. The game is gorgeous and the “pinball” combat mechanic is odd but enjoyable. There is a bare-bones walkthrough available at GameFAQs that I downloaded today. I hope this will help me a bit with the language barrier: at least with regards to the menu structure. What familiar did you choose? I went with the Shade. Who can't love a fucking flying eyeball?

Well, thats the thing, when you tal to the girl by the tree, you can choose which one you want. I've been trying each one every couple of dungeon crawls. I like the "pinball" effect too :)
not a question about the gameplay, but have they made an announcement about the US release?
Not officially. But EGM said this summer and I think IGN said this fall.

Havent even tried to figure out the Gems yet, but I did figure out how to find the second level. When your on the level select screen (outside of town) the bottom right button changes from a "back" button to an option of seeing more of the map. The music in level 2 really reminds me of Phantasy Star.

The hell you say! I'll have to try that. Thanks for the tip, SN. :)

I'm really enjoying the game, but doesn't it seem like the menus are overly complicated? Maybe it's because I haven't played an import rpg before, but still, why not just show the second level on the map?

Considering there's all of one town to visit, having a couple of islands to fight on isnt too much of a stretch.

I think I'm going to start translating bits and peices later on for myself. I'm just getting curious on what certain things say.

Just got to level 3!!!

...and it kicked my as in about 10 seconds. I think some weird Bee like monster hit me with a stinger that took off 100 HP. Damn.

I talked to the little poof-ball type creatures accross the way from the bears, and they upgrade the gem holder for me. That sentence is just really f'ing weird

hmm.. you guys must be hard core RPGers to play an out of language RPG..since RPG rely heavily on story moreso then fast quick gameplay.. glad you guys are enjoying it.. i played some SNES jap ones.. the menus were easy to figure out.. but talking to people sucked.

As bad as it sounds... I dont care about the story. Im just having fun hitting things over and over again while looking at pretty visuals.

I'm also trying to get my eyes to differentiate between Japanese characters since I'm trying to learn the language. When I get a chance to relax at home with it, I'm going to try and translate some of the messages.

True dat! I've been in the mood for a button-mashing dungeon crawler for a while now and this game fit the bill. Plus the price was right. We are all cheap ass gamers, after all! :)
