You can call Microsoft and tell them the code is expired and they should be able to activate it or give you a new one.

Helmet too tight? No, the cards have expiration dates, so if the code is unused but the card is out of date, you can call and give it to them and sometimes they'll either activate the code for you or give you a new in-date code.
