LA Mayor: Mexico Will Shape My Policies

Los Angeles mayor-elect Antonio Villaraigosa said Wednesday that Mexico will play an important role in shaping his policies, reports Mexico's EL UNIVERSAL Online.

"We are starting a new era. Instead of closing the borders, as stated by Schwarzenegger, we should look at our border as an opportunity," Villaraigosa said.

"This is a time of great importance, not just for us to rediscover our roots, but looking to create a mutually beneficial relationship," added the city's first Latino mayor since 1872.
The top L.A. Democrat lamented that the recent passage by Congress of The Real ID Act would prevent illegal aliens from getting driver's licenses if signed into law.

"Politicians in the United States need to understand that immigrants come here for the same reason that immigrants have always come: To work," Villaraigosa told EL UNIVERSAL. "Instead of punishing and demonizing them, we should try to integrate them."

Villaraigosa also told EL UNIVERSAL that he would not support policies that persecute the city's large migrant population.

"I support Special Order 40 [prohibiting police from making migration-related arrests]," he said. "We need our police officers to fight gangs and organized crime. That will keep them more than busy."

It's Newsmax, I'm sure someone else will pick up the translation soon.

Hey, Mr. Mayor? Do you think MS-13 qualifies as a gang or organized crime? Yes? Do you think you may be wrong on this issue? No?

Recall election coming before the end of this dudes first term.

I admit the MS-13 problem is off the chain ( I live in South Florida where we have had many arrests dealing with their members), especially since they have now migrated East. I do not know if tougher immigration will stop it. Quite a few of their members as it stands are new converts and have Visas already issued, and or some are US citzens already. They have been recruiting out the wazoo as of late and found a new group of grunts eager and willing to do what they want. I can agree with some ofwhat the Mayor had said in regards to Special Order 40, as that would tie up the street units all the time. Instead the Feds should do something.. Truth be told down here where I am we only arrest for criminal offenses or if we get a hit off the FCIC/NCIC.

BS, I'm completely against Bush's stance on illegal immigration as well. Neither political party is doing the right thing about it. It just happens to be that California Latino Democrats are out there actively supporting illegal immigration and making BS statements like this guy is.
Uh, no...... the President isn't even mentioned in the article.

Can you read or do you just pretend you can.
But you are bitching about a Latino mayor is doing, but many white mayers (and the white president) are doing the EXACT SAME THING and you say nothing.

How fucking horrible.

Give me a fucking break. Its stupid enough that they can get a license as it is now being an illegal alien.

GG is a manager and she keeps telling me how the people that work for her can't really speak or read English, but she was legally forced to hire them. What kind of fucking bullshit is that?

If Americans go to other countries and speak English we get labled as arrogant for expecting them to cater to our lingual needs. However, we're insensitive assholes if we all don't learn 13 languages so we can make whoever jumped the border feel comfortable whist taking our tax dollars.

Granted, I'm glad these people are working instead of mooching wellfare, but honestly, why the hell would you move to the center of an English speaking country if you couldn't read or SPEAK the fucking language.

I'm wondering how long it will take for someone to call me a bigot or racist... I hold myself to the same standards. I would love to go see Japan, but I wouldn't go unless I knew Japanese. I sure as hell wouldn't live there and seek employement not being able to read or write Japanese.

Its such a shame we ran out of common sense.

I think the right thing to do about it would be to set up catapults every couple of miles. Anyone caught on the wrong side of the line gets sent on a one way flight.

If it makes you feel better ( and I know it does ) I completely agree.

Not to imply anything, I just have to comment on a bumper sticker I saw: "Bigot: -n. "A conservative winning an argument with a liberal".

Hey, PAD. Were you ones of those guys on FreeRepublic who got booted off for not supporting Bush's policy on illegal immigration . I heard that a lot of old timers on that site got labeled "trolls" and consequently banned for not towing the republican party line.
Illegal is illegal ... these people should have no rights at all. (I'm 3/4 mexican by the way)
I agree. I am not Mexican but I am Hispanic.

The truth is Mexico has declared War on the US and will continue to herd their people into our country until we take drastic measures to stop them.

I say we drop a big fat bomb on Fox's head and see if he gets the message to stop sending his problems up here to us.

I also say we send the military to blockade the border and shoot every illegal within 100ft of our country. Maybe they will start to understand that we aren't going to take their shit anymore.

And the LA mayor needs to be arrested for breaking federal law and letting illegals do as they please.

Who is "we"? The US Government? If that was the case, immigration would not be a problem. They have the resources to do it, so why don't they?

By "we", do you mean white middle class people that are fed up with the situation in this country? If so, then make your voices heard! Vote people into office that will look after YOUR interests. Oh wait, the system is not set up that way. You lose. We all lose.

I'm Hispanic by the way. I was born here and my parents are US Citizens. I also hate the gangs but there is nothing that we can do about them.

The frame work for this movie was set up thirty years ago. Bush was still buying his way through college.

Yes, the framework was in the works 30 years ago. But the script likely wasn't finalized until just before production began.

Because like you said you don't understand. Your ancestors, and many others were from all parts of the world. Italy, Germany, Poland, Spain w/e. And from all those immigrants that came here, how many of them do you think actually knew the English language? Probably a small amount.

It's just that for the Mexicans you have NO idea how hard they have it in Mexico. They all live in extreme poverty. They risk their lives to cross the border because of the conditions they live in.

You and other middle class Americans can not comprehend how it feels to be poor, how it feels to have no money and barely any food to survive on. And to me it's just astonishing on how you say, "how could they come here if they dont know English!?" That's all.

If you live in America you should learn the language, if you like it or not, its the truth. My "ancestors" came over and learned the langauge. My grandma and her sister fleed East Germany and came to AMerica. They learned the language, an so should others.

Mexico sucks, we know this, but you live her you shouldn't have more rights than the people born her. So don't treat us like idiots because you don't agree.

I made no mention of a bunch of people from a dozen countries flooding into what was commonly considered open land. (Yea, the indians... But thats a whole nother thread) There was no official standard set for the land, so most people stuck with their own nationalities. However, over the hundreds of years since the first Europeans came here people came to the general consensus that you need to speak the same language so things go smoothly. Now that theres an established norm, people should either conform, or not bother coming. You can wear towels and blankets on your heads all you want. You can speak what ever language you want at home. However, when in public, its merely common decency to those around you to use the local language.

Is it really too much to ask for people to conform to the same language as the other 350 million people living in the country?

As for my background or what I've experienced, you have little to no idea. There have been times I could count every individual dollar in my bank account in under a minute and I've had to go days without eating. I know what its like to be broke as all fuck. Hell, even right now I'm in deep shit. I got laid off, rent is due, I owe tens of thousands in student loans and I still need to eat. I don't know hardship? I'm sorry, but you don't have to speak spanish to have a hard life.

Nativism at it's finest. Please I hope you don't visit any other country with anyone without knowing how to speak that language fluently. And no, don't bother to talk to your friend to translate something for you in public, because that would not be common decency.

And your financial troubles are little compared to those south of the border.

I don't post that often or regularly on freerepublic.com. It's an extension of the Drudge Report to me, a way to find articles of interest that I may not otherwise find. The posts over there are rarely debated, just agreed to. I don't find it very entertaining as a result. I don't even think my login is a year old so I'm hardly an old timer. I've posted here longer.

If there were bannings over debates on immigration policy I wouldn't really know or care about it. I can assure you of one thing though, there are far fewer people banned from FR than DU. I'm not trying to compare one site to right and one to wrong but generally I see a crowd far more willing to debate opposing viewpoints on FR than DU. I also see fewer removed posts or holes where replies have been removed by moderation. So I think the report of bannings was probably exaggerated for CNN purposes.

I already said I wouldn't go anywhere I didn't know the language... And what just might be your problem? I said I hold myself to the same standards I expect of others. I'm not making this racial, I'm not being cruel or biggoted. I'm saying if people want to be a part of the country, they should act like it. I wouldn't go to France and call myself French if I didn't speak French. I would not go to Germany if I did not speak German. I would go to England because I do speak English.

This isn't me saying, "I don't wan't those stupid dirty wetbacks jumpin the fuckin border and stealing my fuckin tax dollars because they're all a bunch of wellfare mooches."

I'm simply saying that I don't think anyone should go anywhere if they aren't willing to conform the the most basic function of a successful society- that being, a common language.

I agree - and think your Japan analogy is right on - I'm all for open immigration, but to me it makes no sense to come to a country and not bother to learn the language. Its not being racist - if a white as paper Russian came to the US, I'd expect him/her to still learn the language.

I'm not really a regular on DU, so I can't say for sure about who they ban. I know they ban a lot of new people that they suspect are there simply to cause trouble. first things first:
"And according to last year's National Agricultural Workers Survey, fully 25 percent of farm workers are illegal aliens" cis.org

so if any of you like food from california, you should probably consider what you are saying about illegal immigrants.

furthermore, there are plenty of neighborhoods all over the country that don't speak an ounce of english. they seem to be getting along fine. it's not required to speak english in this country, and why should it?

why shouldn't english speaking people be required to speak spanish? Why shouldn't spanish be adopted as a national language, much like in other countries with several national languages.

Post apartheid south africa has 20 national languages.

Mexicans are here to stay, there's a long line of nativist sentiment in this country with every wave that dates back to the 1800s

First ze germans and irish, then italians, the chinese and japanese, now the mexicans... give it a rest, will you?

Have you been to new york city? or Houston? or sanfrancisco? or Miami? or Chicago? There are many communities that never speak english: vietnamese, italian, polish, chinese, indian, etc.

There are millions of americans who don't speak english (american? ;))

language is not the most basic function of a successful [liberal] society. Tolerance, consensus and fairness are. My laundryman in Brooklyn doesn't know a goddamn word of english, he's some kooky guy from Botswana who just asks his boss when a customer comes. I don't give a shit, he's making money and he washed some of my clothes. Why must he learn english? Sure it'd be easier for him and i'm sure he will, but he doesn't have to.
