Console Painting

I pained my first GameCube. I figured sinces it was all ready open because I was modding it I might as well paint it =P

I picked up a can of matalic gold spraypaint and a can of sealer. It looked really snazzy. =)
Two of my other friends also painted their cubes one got a can of this black paint that changes color, looked really cool. and the other picked up a can of that spraypaint that that makes things look like rock. that turned out really cool but took more time to do becayse that paint adds layers and we had to clean it up alot more then when we used the normal paint.

I've been considering painting my GameCube (it's purple, for crying out loud). Did you guys sand down the console before painting it so that it clings better, or did you just spray it and seal it with no real pre-steps? I would love to hear any tips that you seasoned console painters could share. :)

Painted my cube white. I didn't go through the sanding process but I did prime + paint + clear coat. Very nice if I say so myself.

I assume you also tri-layered the open and reset buttons, right? It seems to me that the buttons shouldn't fit with those added layers of paint, since they fit in the case very snugly as it is. Does that sound like an odd concern? I heard that sanding everything down makes the pieces fit back together better. Am I off my rocker here?

It will fit. A layer of spray paint is very thin. There is quite a bit of space inbetween. Just do less coats than you would the rest of the console. Besides, if you ever put too much paint, you can always use paint thinner and start over or sand down the sides of the painted buttons since it can't be see once reassembled.

You can sand the entire console, I opted to skip that route. Just make sure to get good quality paints and do thin even coats. Don't rush yourself since this is not a 5 minute job.
Thanks for the tips, Spidey. Do you happen to have any pics of your painted Cube?
I could take some but I'm too lazy to recharge the battery for my digicam.

Just picture a gamecube all white and glossy. :D

How in the heck does someone who is too lazy to charge up a camera ever attain enough motivation to paint a console? My mind is boggled. :p

You got me there...

I just dropped the battery in the charge. I'll PM the pics to you when I'm done. :D

me and my friends didn't sand ours down but we did prime the gold and color changing ones. the stone one didn't need it because it was black. the gold and color changing ones were purple.

My Cube is purple, so I'll definitely prime it. You two seem to be pleased with the results without sanding, so I think I'll skip on the sanding, too.
I can't wait, Spidey. :D

use krylon fusion. or read up at forums.xbox-scene.com and goto the case modding section. read abouit the newbie. i painted all sorta crap with krylon fusion and boy does it look sweet

Everyone and their momma sweats Krylon Fusion, so I already had that in mind. I read that it doesn't even need a primer, but that you get better results if you do use one. Does any Web site sell this paint? My Wal-Mart's color selection is lame.

Any of those chain autoparts stores like AutoBarn or Strauss Auto should also have them.

Buying spraypaint online can get rather expensive because of shipping.

If you use Fusion paint, you don't need ot sand it down. Fusion is made for plastics. The downside is that the colors really suck :(

I wanted to paint my GCN, but never got around to it. Maybe I'll do it eventually.
